    1. Inhalers not used properly are always the reason why people assume they don't work. Get your sister to speak to a pharmacist to show her how to use it properly. She needs to be using 2 different types of inhalers. A preventive inhaler which is often corticosteroids and a reliever which can be salbutamol. She may need to use a spacer device to help her or maybe get the automated dry powder inhalers. Inhalers do work effectively and will control her asthma if used correctly. Speak to her dr too. They might consider adding montelusk 5mg tablet to ease her symptoms. Do more research my dear, get the British drug book BNF. It shows you how to manage asthma. Good luck and God bless

  2. wow! what I just spoke about. ASTHMA!

I used to be an asthma patient. wheezing badly at the slightest. had inhalers tucked in my bags, different places.

all of a sudden it just stopped. as in stopped and never re-occurred.
    it is inexplainable. miraculous!
    6years gone past, no wheezing.

    1. Asthma could be self limiting. It all depends. Many people experienced it as a kid, and never again in adulthood. It also could be very dangerous if not properly handled. Thank God yours went away.

    2. Please poster, take ur sister to a HOSPITAL. It baffles me how Nigerians take health issues with such carelessness and come back crying wolf. Meanwhile, she should avoid the possible triggers of her crisis, dust, humid air, etc and drink plenty of water and fresh fruits. A doctor will prescribe a more potent inhaler for her and with a healthy lifestyle, she should be asthma free in a few years

    3. If you know you have rugs in your house and thick curtains, nne, vamoose all of them from your house. Make sure wherever she stays has more air and space and not packed with loads and clothes around her. Her surroundings should be extremely clean and neat cos asthmatic patients nose sensitivity is very high. As it is now, she shouldn't go near where u are peeling onions, oranges and most especially, she should avoid plenty fries. I don't know how long she has had it, but it usually reduces to almost zero level if you've had as a kid and matured as an adult. Also let her try and identify what triggers off her attack, that way she will be able to avoid such things and live a better life. I think her inhalers should be ok. Maybe in her panic which is more of what asthmatics face, she might tend not to position it well.

  3. @Poster, what medication is she on now and how often does she take it? Has she discovered what the triggers of her crisis are yet?

    1. Good question!

Her triggers (what was she doing before each attacks) needs to be examined and eliminated.

And her medication might need bigger dose or changed entirely.

I wish her healing and good health.

  7. She shld use seretide inhaler, use it morn and even everyday it helps to control asthma and prevent future attacks buh it shld nt be used when there's an actual attack. Also she shld nt expose herself to things that triggers the attack like dust, cold etc pple have diff asthma triggers, my sisters own then was smell of cockroach lol

    1. Exactly @ seretide, it's a blessing. As for ventolin inhaler for this naija, fake fake fake! Plenty fake out there, or maybe the ones sold in this part of the world have little potency because when I went abroad and got one from the GP,infact it was soooo relieving. That was when I knew that dem no sell d real thing for us in naija..

Knowing what triggers it and keeping off is the best approach really, cos with time u'll have less attacks and no major ones for a whole year or more like my situation, the moment I learnt to stay away from the triggers I haven't been rushed to the hospital for any emergency concerning asthma, glory to God o. My triggers are dust, perfumes and all sorts of fumes even frying anything.. sometimes taking too much cold drinks can start the wheezing.. best wishes

  8. It's a pity dear poster , I pray u find answers her ....

  9. Pls go to the hospital now and ask questions. Besides like bloglord said a miracle can happen, put her in your daily prayers.

  10. Get seretide discus by GSK, it works well. It's N4500

  11. Just leave it ooooo let her stay away from the "causers" of the attacks and take her prednisolone judiciously. Na so my mama find traditional cure nearly kill me no concoction they didn't mix for me to drink. Now I've outgrown it the only time I have difficulty in breathing is when I'm extremely cold or beaten by rain. Just leave it and stick to medications and stay away from triggers and always have inhaler nearby if it's possible let one of ya family member be trained on how to administer iv aminophiline to her when attack comes.

    1. Prednisolone na steroid o, limit the usage as much as u can, cos it makes u fatter, well made me fatter n all sorts so I don stay off i'd rather use franol even that one dey cause anxiety sometimes

  12. What inhaler does has she been using? I've never heard of inhalers not working. Albuterol is a rescue inhaler (when you get asthma attack) for asthma and it is very effective. So my dear, what have you been using? Unless you are overusing/overdoing it, then you won't get the result you are looking for.
There are also maintenance inhalers you can use daily like advair, dulera, and flovent (there are several, just naming a few). Don't use the maintenance inhaler as a rescue inhaler by any chance.
And if fellow SDKers know of any roots or herbs, please let poster know, this is what I know.

  13. Your sister should make ginger tea her drink.
    And she shd try garlic.
My brother had asthma but it's all gone now.
    Ginger and garlic works wonder!

  14. Poster, it's the change in weather. My asthma has been acting up for about a month or so.

Most importantly, if her inhaler is not working currently, she needs to go to a reputable hospital right away. She can die. They will give her a steroid to relax her airways. This could be intravenously or through a nebuliser. The doctor will also prescribe a steroid, usually prednisone, along with ventolin and whatever else he/she deems necessary. It is very important that she takes the prednisone exactly as prescribed and that she finishes the dosage. Once she's better, she has to work on maintenance.

Depending on the frequency of her attacks, she may need to be on a preventive inhaler which differs from the regular blue inhaler. She has to be hyper aware of her triggers and stay away from them. Cold drinks, hot rooms, very cold rooms are a no no. Inhaling very cold air will constrict her airways. If she must use a fan, it has to be cleaned regularly so it doesn't whip up dust.

In addition to my twice daily Ventolin tablet, I exercise inside every day. I try to keep my weight down. I drink only room temperature water and first thing in the morning, I drink hot water. Once a month, I take the vilest concoction known to mankind. It is a pounded mixture of Uda(?) or aidan, alubosa elewe (native spring onion) and isu merin. You pound to a pulp and squeeze all liquid out. You take it first thing in the morning and within 30 minutes, you'll throw up all the phlegm blocking your airways. It is revolting but I have taken it for years and I only have flare ups when I skip it.

There is also one I take when I have a congested chest or bad cold. The juice of 1 lime, dry red pepper and a spoon of honey. It also clears phlegm. Regular steam inhalation and hot water bathes help.

Most important, know your triggers. I have no shame. I wear masks everywhere. To the market o, walking on the street. As long as I'm outside my car, mask is on. In taxis sef, I cover.

  15. Poster, first of all ur sis should identify her triggers n avoid them- if she doesn't know wat triggers d attack she ll continue to suffer it.

    Ex - dust, animals(feather) mold, roach . These r d in-doors allergens dat might trigger d attack

  25. Take her to the hospital and while at it, let them run a full blood test on her. I was diagnosed of asthma years ago but I haven't had an attack for almost two years. So it came as a surprise wen about a month ago I started having severe attacks. I was at d tail end of my 2nd trimester then. The doctors kept treating with drugs and injections but it only got worse. I decided to seek a second opinion. After the new doctor gave me IV aminophylline and hydrocortisone, he asked me to return the next day. When I did he ran a full blood test on me. Turns out I had senior and junior typhoid(high values), malaria, blood infection, low calcium and low blood volume!! I was shocked becos I wasn't really running a fever and wasn't sick to the point of being bedridden, just fatigued which I attributed to the stress of pregnancy.
He started me on a cocktail of injections and tablets being very careful of what he prescribed cos of the baby. He also gave me seretide diskus inhaler.
Finished my medications last week and I've not had an attack since then. So for me, the trigger was internal...

  26. Hi I really feel so sorry for your sister I was once in that situation I was having chronic asthma right from child hood at a point inhaler stopped working I think when you use inhaler excessively it stops working.i can't explain how it stopped I believe a person out grows it.for years I have not had it Thank God for that. There was an injection I was giving every 6 month then. Please let her go to hospital and also keep praying nothing will happen to her because then I was thinking I will die to God be the glory am asthma free.

  30. ***HEALING-RAIN***

I have not had an attack for almost 12yrs now
The inhaler doesn't help much when your body gets used to it.
Dust, insecticides, fumes, harmattan weather triggered my attack then but l am ok now thanks to garlic and honey.
I chewed cloves of fresh garlic and white onions @ any given time, especially bed time by morning,l spit the whole phlegm out, after a month l found out l wasn't wheezing or had any attack,l had no need for ventolin inhaler/tablets or franol,my breathing improved. Sometimes l do not even remember l was asthmatic. Garlic is quite effective for combating asthma but the smell is offensive.
Fresh green apples, lemon juice and fresh parsley leaves neutralizes the odour.l hope it helps your sister.l also used coconut oil and pure cod liver oil to build my immune system against the attack of asthma.
She can mix all these in pure green smoothies to take.
This is my healing cleanse smoothie recipe:
    1/2 Celery
    1 cucumber
    1 cup cilantro and parsley
    1lemon(peeled n deseeded)
    2tbsp ginger(grated
    4 cloves peeled garlic
    2 green apples
Juice and take every morning before food.

    please listen carefully!
DO NOT try giving your sister beer parlour or market gossip advice if she has severe or persistent symptoms of Asthma, SHE NEEDS TO BE UNDER THE CARE OF A DR WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE DOING!!

To everyone else,Never let anyone give you Aminophylline except they are trained to do so.Why do people use their lives to fly kite like this?? So annoying
