Dangote Reduces Cement Price To N1,000

Dangote Cement Plc has announced a 41 per cent reduction in the prices of cement, with the different grades of the essential commodity now selling for between N1,000 and N1,150, exclusive of Value Added Tax.

In the new price regime announced on Sunday by the Group Managing Director, Dangote Cement, Mr. Devakumar Edwin, a 50kg bag of the 32.5 cement grade will now sell for N1,000, while the higher 42.5 grade is to sell for N1,150 per bag instead of the current N1,700 that both grades were going for.

Edwin said in a statement that the move was in line with the company’s commitment to the nation, especially the need for the development of infrastructure and boost ongoing efforts to reduce the near 20 million housing deficit in Africa’s largest economy.

“We recognise the need for a dramatic increase in the response to the huge infrastructure and housing deficit in the country, and one of the ways of addressing the issue is bringing the price of building materials down to much more affordable levels, especially cement, which is within our own control as part of our contribution to the transformation agenda of the President Goodluck Jonathan administration and the attainment of key milestones in the Millennium Development Goals,” he was quoted as saying.

Since the commencement of the implementation of the backward integration policy for cement in the country over 12 years ago, the local production capacity of the product had risen from less than two million metric tonnes per annum to about 38 million metric tonnes per annum currently.

During the period, over $20bn has been directly and indirectly injected into the Nigerian cement industry with Dangote Cement Plc accounting for 60 per cent of that expenditure.

Edwin also said that Dangote Cement would continue to ensure the alignment of its corporate social responsibility with its strategic business initiatives, and would continue to evaluate its pricing regime in the country’s best interest.

According to the statement, stakeholders have commended the price reduction and say the cement market is entering the high demand phase as the dry season, which provides the opportunity for increased construction and building activities, is setting in.

In compliance with the directive of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria on the various grades of cement and their prescribed uses, Dangote Cement recently inaugurated its brand of the premium 32.5 grade, which has been restricted to plastering use only.

The largest cement producer in Nigeria noted that the move was to develop a full bouquet of cement types to meet the varying needs of consumers for the different purposes.

The company produces the 42.5 grade for column casting, block making, decking and other general purpose construction works that require high strength, while the 32.5 grade is for rendering or plastering.

The company also produces on demand the 52.5 grade for specialised construction of high strength structures such as bridges, flyovers and sky scrapers, among others.

Dangote Cement said in compliance with the SON standard for cement quality and packaging, the lower 32.5 grade would be clearly labelled in order to minimise the incidence of building collapse arising from the misapplication of the different grades of cement....Punch.

this is good news indeed.

  11. This is not true. From the factory, the bag of cement is N1,200:00 as at November 3! Dangote has almost destroyed business for many of us. In October, the company urged us to buy minimum of twenty trailers to get a certain commission. A lot of us invested and bought several trailer-loads at N1, 450:00 per bag. Only for the company to reduce the price to the N1,200. Even the commission promised us can not cover the loss being incurred by those of us in the wholesale chain of the business.

  15. Stories that touch, the insiders know the truth, wicked man, always trying to put competitors out of business by selling below their cost price then paying customs to seize competitors goods, God is greater than you and would reward you, after all this vanity in this life, you know where you will end

  17. Wow...Dangote is ruining our economy and we are all celebrating him. it's really sad how ignorant most of us are. Dangote is dominating the cement market and killing every form of competition, smaller companies would be forced out of business. Government should check his excesses though because Dangote cement isn't the best out there yet he dictates market price. There should be healthy competition between competitors, so more companies can spring up and more jobs created. The Oligarchy here in Nigeria is just appalling. Stella this is not good news. Ask Ibeto and Eagle cement and co.

  22. Heaven knows am not always keen on buying dangotes commodities, as a good student of commerce it's obivious he is a monopolist, who has been making wicked decisions concerning Nigerian market and reaping bountifully at the expense of the masses, well I wouldn't blame him, if it wasn't for baba obj whom gave him d power.

He actually thinks we are all gullible and mesmerized with this new slash after he has made thousands of turnover.he dictates the market as he wishes, such a pity some retailer will be badly burnt and creating nightmares for competitors.

Hopefully we will have a balanced Nigerian system very soon ijn.

  25. Its high time to say no to Dangote’s way of doing business. Dangote shld stop fooling Nigerians. Yes! Its good he reduced the price of cement. But is it by sending his dealers/distributors/competitors to early grave, and bankrupting them???
Dangote cant keep robbing Peter to pay Paul! He made his cement dealers to borrow money and sell properties; to participate in the 6 weeks lifting bonus he offered them. The dealers stocked all Dangotes cement until nothing left. They bought at 1635 per bag, and Dangote reduced the cement price to 1000, just 24 hours after the bonus ended. What a wicked man??? He didn’t even give them space to sell. He didn’t even consider the poor cement traders in remote villages. Im sure none of them will be in business again; that is if they wont die of heart attack. Loosing millions to a greedy man that claims to be richest in Africa???
This is pure 419! Broad day robbery! Just because he wanna get on his competitors……Larfarge, Ibeto etc. Nigeria’s market regulators, EFCC, Govt etc shld look into this case (CEMENT MONPOLY). Dangote diaris God ooooo!!!
