Bristol Man Pays Almost £500 For Dropping Pringles Lid!

A man has been ordered to pay almost £500 in fines and costs for dropping a snack lid on the ground in Bristol.
Gareth Daniel, 31, of Humberstan Walk, was seen by a PCSO dropping a Pringles lid in Lawrence Weston, in April.

Bristol magistrates heard he failed to pay a £75 fixed penalty notice, so a final warning was sent. He was taken to court and the fine was raised to £200.

Mr Daniel must also pay costs totalling £298.75. The council said it "would not tolerate littering on any scale".
Assistant mayor for neighbourhoods, Green councillor Gus Hoyt, said he feared the story would make front page news as a "barmy council" tale.
"But the truth of the matter is no one likes people who litter and Mr Daniel was fined £75," he said.
"The council spends £14m a year on clearing all types of waste... a cost which inevitably falls to the taxpayer, most of whom haven't caused the mess."
Mr Hoyt said the community must tackle the problem of littering to "make our city a better place to live".

Magistrates set costs at £278.75 and also ordered that Mr Daniel pay a £20 victim surcharge.BBC reportage

*this has almost happened to me before oh....in the early part of when i came to the diaspora i was taking a walk and eating Doner, when i finished i just stoned the wrap on the floor and walked away but someone tapped me after five minutes,i turned and she seemed out of breathe. In her hand was what i dropped and she was handing it back to me to do the right thing.I was so shocked cos in Naija it was normal keh.

She threatened to report me and i hissed and was walking away when i turned and saw her making a call,my heart skipped,i went back to her and collected the wrap and told her ''madam na wah for this your amebo work oh''....of course she didnt understand me but i did the right thing and shamefully left.

Do people still drop things in Naija?

  3. People drop a lot in Nigeria, but then I thing the state govt's or local govts should provide public dust bins all over their states so people can easily drop their thrash in there.

    1. They provided in some states...some were stolen...some even used it as football....you see, aside from enforcement, it's also a mindset based on morals...you don't throw things anywhere just because there's no law.
May God give us the grace to be good citizens

    3. Abeg everyone is guilty of this including ME. Shebi lagos state even tried to enforce this one time, that they provided bins in cabs sef but we no dey listen. Even inside church some people just throw wraps of cookies or whatever under their seats. The one that irritates me is when they stick chewed gum to chairs. I have learned to stop throwing thrash from inside the car though. I dey always shame. If we can be disciplined outside Nigeria then we can maintain it within. People won't cross the red light abroad but would cross it in Nigeria. Public toilets nko...people just leave their mess behind because it's a public one. Charity begins at home. Ok bye

  6. I had to TRAIN my hubby, typical Ibadan man after he moved here to the States to stop throwing waste out of our moving car while driving. He would drink water and throw the empty bottles out of the window while driving on the highway. To him it was normal. I told him things like that are not "normal' here o. You will get arrested and fined. Little wonder Nigeria is so dirty. I remember growing up and just throwing my biscuit wrappers on the street. Im sure the laws exist but I wish they'll be stricter about it.

Even sweet wrappers I don't, I put them in my back anddispose them properly later. From now tho i'd make conscious efforts not to throw away the smallest of things.. lmao @ stellas narrative, too funny!

    5. In developed societies, u have bins at every 2mins or 5mins walk at the most, so I see no reason why any1 shld litter there.

  14. Lmao@Momo babe's comment.

It will actually take something like these happening to a few persons before Nigerians can actually think shun the habit of dropping things on the streets.

But before that we need more waste bins along the roads, in buses and other strategic places to encourage people against dropping rubbish on the road.

    1. You don't need laws to do d right thing my dear. Peeps just think it's only about making the environment clean but can also pose danger to road users e.g banana skin on the road, nylon and plastic bottles thrown at a high speed....Nigerians know the right thing...we just don't want to do it!

    2. Some time ago I was behind this minibus moving at a pretty decent speed about to merge into Eko bridge. The fool of a driver decided to toss a bottle out of the window. I didn't think anything of it immediately....oh, typical naija littering. It wasn't until I heard the crash that I knew this cow had thrown a glass bottle. Had to swerve. Retard!

  28. 60% OF Nigerians are very dirty.....Trust me, even if they see a dustbin 10feet away, they will liter. the only way to deal with Nigeria, is by imposing a fine for every wrong doing....Most Nigerians come abroad and abide by the rules, but go back home and become something else.... TC
