University Degree Third Class? Post Your Stories Here.

A lot of people have bombarded me with their third class degree stories after a concerned blog visitor opened up yesterday in the narratives that she had a third class degree and was ashamed to tell anyone thus she couldn't get a job..

Being ashamed is natural because we think society will judge us.When I left the
University of Benin with my 3rd class degree,I was like a running horse.

I was a victim of something that I refused to give in to and that was why I was let off with a third class.I was happy to go and in tears asked God to push me to the front.I never gave up.It was even more difficult when I tried to apply for a job and got told only people with second class could apply.

Today I have a various degrees and my third class degree looks like child's play compared to the others.
Was I ashamed that I got a third class?Yes back then I was and I could not even talk about it,Today i am standing strong and Hope that all the people who come out to tell their stories encourage others who are feeling low because they think their world has ended.

Having a third class degree isn't the end of the world !

Do you have a third class story? Please post it here.

*now una understand why i gbagaun a lot.hahahahahahhahahaha

I'm amazed at people's really low mentalities, What do u mean so Stella is a 3rd class material, a lot of them are highly intelligent, it is just carelessness and being carefree, ur result never determines who u are and now, wise employers know that. Even in advanced countries, they employ based on what u can offer, they don't send ur result

    9. Stella sure your English made I have a third class.... U need to improve..... Not all who had a third class were dull. Some just didn't take studies seriously and if course the other half were just dull..... We emphasise too much on paper qualifications in naija so even those who are just meant to go to a technical school cos of gifts that will make them excell will struggle for a degree.... Also some people have learning disabilities like dixlesia which we Africans don't even have data on....above all it doesn't determine your level of success in life just that it disqualifies you from entry level in any job search...

    1. Wow, thumbs up Stella. I have never been more inspired.
I shared my third class story sometime back; if Stella herself would remember. I sent it out to other blogs, but only Stella deemed it worthy of publication. I have been searching for stories of third class degree holders all over the Internet, google would have been fed up, lol. None so far has been this comprehensive. Can you believe I have never applied for any job?, I have automatically condemned my abilities, Lord have mercy! I'm so so thankful to this family!
I have been working in the company I served. And I'm currently the supervisor/Manager. Trust me, everybody marvels at my skills. My Oga(s) have never had a supervisor like me. I do everything with such dexterity, the type that leaves you in awe. The only problem is, it's a one man firm. Albeit the nice words and praises gladdens the heart, there's almst no chance of self accomplishment or going up the ladder. Salaries re constant, maybe reviewed downwards sometimes when business is low.
Just never downgrade yourself with your third class. I think it even brings out the best in us. It makes us more brave, more poised, more determined to make a difference. Check Stella out, she's got this flavour, no other blogger knows that flavour or where in the market she got it from.
We need to encourage ourselves. We need a group, to discuss ourselves and discuss strategies.
We need employers to interview us.
Aunty Stella, let's start a movement, please don't give up on this. Bring this thread up once in a while, and let's read how someone has been inspired. Wide Eye, am a big fan!

  5. Dear Stella,
My family prayers are with you. Keep touching lives...

Straight to the point, I can relate with graduating with 3rd class and the pains attached, because I was there for few years too after graduation not knowing what to do with my 3rd class certificate in Engineering!

For the record, I did graduated with 3rd class majorly due to a power drunk HOD of Chemistry department then. She co-ordinates a course then (CHM 203, a 4 units course), my sin was to be in a wrong exam hall, where she supervised and caught a guy and she was injured while dragging with that guy. The guy later escaped, left our department later, but she decided to keep failing (us) me for 3 consecutive years for ‎no just reason. All people in that hall got "F" for 3 straight years. Many changed courses because of her, but I just don't see myself doing another course than my course then!

My department tried to intervened severally but She keep failing us ( almost half of my set) then until I dropped from been a strong 2:1 Candidate to a weak 2:2 Candidate and when she decided to pass me (us) in Final year with a "D", I missed graduating as 2:2 with 0.04 GP point! I never had extra year, but the ripple effect of her actions was no mean fit at all. I have since forgiven her, but her name will be in my Biography one day. She may never know I exist! All Ogunlesis watch out!

So, on‎ graduation day, I wasn't fulfilled at all, rather I felt I had an unfinished business on that campus!

After few years, I decided to return to the same department in the same school for my PDG and Masters and by His grace, I did graduated with 4.67 (Distinctions) in my M.sc level, from the ‎course I earlier got 3rd class! I even got a SGP OF 5.00 in one of my semesters. That alone has wiped away my tears, my heart ache and catapults me to greatness. I have since worked with Multinationals, Oil & Gas etc and I can say today I am a Success story!

To all young graduate that graduated with 3rd Class and you are feeling that burn in, I say to you leave comfort zone now! And don’t let your grade define your life. ‎confide in your loved ones, don’t bear the burden alone, start doing something and retrace your step, you might find things interesting on your way too.

    2. Awwww, great advise sir.
Your story is so similar to my cousin's. Same engineering. If not for some info, I would have said he is the one who wrote this.
My cousin did the same as you, he first of all opened up to my parents who were his sponsors. We were all there for him cos we know be is really a very smart cool headed guy.
It wasn't easy for him when he got his certificate but I thank God he didn't let it define him. He is doing very well in abj now, married with kids and living fine to the glory of God. The person who caused his misfortune in school is now late.

To students, this does not mean you guys should relax and not take your studies seriously. You all should please put in all your possible best I your studies and leave the rest to God.
      It is well.

  6. Hi Stella I graduated with a third class from University of Ibadan. To date I have worked with two multi-national companies and in both companies I rose to positions that were management positions. Sometimes one thing or the other lead to poor grades in school but you have to be determined to take your life along the direction you want it to go. Its usually nigerian organisations that put stipulations on class of degrees for employment but multi-nationals are more concerned with performance. Today I've acquired very important experience in my field. Yes at first I felt ashamed and disappointed when I came out with a third class but I had to fight on to get my first job and today that's history. Just keep developing yourself and be ready when an opportunity may come calling. Best of luck.

  7. Yes, most times grades from the university had been made a criteria to success. But the truth is, if you are sure of your substance, you could as well challenge the status quo.

Some organisations reject people upfront, while others give you a little chance to proof. That opportunity is what everyone in this category should look out for to properly sell their intelligence.

Some are naturally slow learners, but once they have grab of it. They become a pro at it.

Low grades isn't the end of life. It could be a springboard to greater honours.

Btw, I have openings for two corp member accountants in Lagos. Kindly send your cvs to Stella's mail

I don't have stories to tell, but I know 3rd class should never limit an individual..If I was an employer of labour, I will even fish out the applicants that have 3rd class and interview them thoroughly..you will be amazed that you will find a diamond among them! They are the ones that put in their all because they are forever trying to prove that they can do more than expected!

  12. It's only those who are mentally lazy that will be limited to something as little as this. For crying out loud, some people never went to school, some went but dropped out.
Back then in secondary school, there was this guy I was always helping in class. As in you could tell from the look of things that schooling wasn't just his thing. But he was very creative! We all left school and gained admission but he couldn't even pass. 4yrs ago he decided to go for his passion which has to do with all this video coverage and all- cinematography in short. Right now, without any degree, he travels abroad to cover programs for RCCG. He's balling big time!
Summary:nothing is cable of limiting you! Except yourself!
Education is paramount but not a criterion to success. Nature will give for those who are persistent at what they do, who have stubborn optimism, who have faith and believe in themselves and with bended knees in prayers. HAVE A POSITIVE APPROACH

    1. Reminds me of someone ooo. My very good friend. He wasn't so good when it came to writing but the dude was super creative. He had an extra year and graduated with a third class that the department just flung at him cos I guess they were tired. But now the guy just passed out from service and his ppa retained him and me, his former colleague is still in search of a job with my 2:1 plus skill and everything. I remember once telling him that his class of degree didn't mean anything when he complained to me about his result. I'm really happy for him because I know some of my course mates looked down on him. Sometimes it's not about what the paper carries but what you can do. The dude in question even told the people at his ppa that he will think about their offer. If you have a 3rd class abeg don't carry it on your face. Use it as some sort of motivation to aim higher. The ones with the 3rd class in most cases are the hustlers that end up employing the ones who have a higher class of degree.

  15. first of all, whatever grade you get this days doesnt matter as it takes the grace of God to succeed in whatever aspect of life not just education and career. Now to the point, i graduated with a 3rd class from uniben. i knew that would be my grade, how i got there, story for the gods. Now this is the third place i am working and none has asked me for my results or certs (strange right) i dont put my grades in my cv. its just God's grace upon my life. as we speak, i am currently the the second in charge of an intl organisation that just launched in nigeria. I am young and single. I am still overwhelmed by the love of God upon my life. Nobody knows my grade, not my family not even my bf. e no concern aye. Na me and God know agreement we make. So this is just to encourage everbody out ther who is under the 3rd class spell, to look unto the bride side of life. recently we had an opening in my office and people came for interviews, you will not believe my Boss wants to hire the girl with a 3rd class. so..... Its not the end of the world. it will only be a stigma to you, if you let it be and it will put you down. i am planning on doing my masters abroad sometime in 2016, with my professional qualification i wont have to do anything rotten PGD. but i know some schools in in UK accept 3rd class for masters, schools like swansea university and they are cheap. thank me later. Now cheer up. BYE.

Notwithstanding, I can tell you that i'm not as intelligent as some friends I met along life's journey who had 3rd class. Yes academically I could be tagged "brilliant" but life is more than being brilliant, one needs some "native intelligence" and that I lack. Everyday I ask God to help me. I just sit in my office and feel cool wit myself and feel like I am doing a good job, bottom line is that my 3rd class friends give me major ideas when i'm faced wit challenging national issues. UR CLASS OF DEGREE DOESN'T DEFINE YOU! For me, my 2:1 is just a facade to my weakness. Though I have my masters and other professional qualifications now. For those of you with 3rd class never feel intimidated by "us" we are not better than you. Annie LP

Here my my own story, my educational background was very poor, I went to a primary sch where they teach u with local dialet cos my parent cldnt afford a good sch, den wen tins bcam better my darling bro took me away from d village I was in SS2 den. Luckyly I was able to pass my WAEC and my jamb cos jamb was objectives, I passed my post UME too cos it was also objectives, I cld read, I was smart but cldnt write in correct english cos I cldnt speak well and my spelling was very poor too, I always pass my objectives with Bs but theory heighest was C, I knw wat to write but did not knw how to express myself in plain english, lol. So after my year 2, I picked up my nephew's brighter gramma and started learning english and spellings, cartoons with subtitles helped too and I listen wen ppl speak dem memorise it lol, I picked up in my year 3 then my year 4 I spent 4months shuttling hospital and sch cos I was taking care of my mom from friday to monday, till she died, I also had D in som of my exams due to menstural wahala cos I use 2 have serz cramps and heavy flow. At a point I was feeling very bad abt d 3rd class, I lost confidence n was too afraid to do anything cos I was afraid I wld fail but now I honestly dnt, cos now I can spell and I can write and I feel proud abt it cos I tot myself how 2 do dat. Thanks for leting me share my story.

    2. Hmm. I remember when my colleague in school shared her story. She schooled in a village where they would sit on the floor and learn and all write on the ground while she would be at the farm. Some way and somehow she found herself in a very expensive university and graduated with a 2:2. She would read a lot and made sure she contributed in class even with her grammar. She really didn't care. I don't know where she is now but before we left school, she had already started her own NGO.

  19. I finished with a third class too, my own case is that i did a combined honours course which i had no interest in,when i was offerd the course i took it because i didnt want to spend another year at home, i was basically struggling with one of the courses in my first to third year but with the other one i was doing great, but unfortunately being good at one of the courses didnt guarantee me a good result coupled with having several carry overs which led to my having an extra year on the said course.
i must admit that i was and still ashamed to tell people that i had a third class but that didnt deter me from pushing myself and getting a job,in less than one year post nysc, when my mates with 2.2 and 2.1 where still looking for jobs, and leaving jobs to get other ones all this with my third class result o!it wasnt until recently i was able to upgrade the result, i got a pgd, and hoping on gettin my masters soon..i no not everyone has the same story, but when you put your trust in God and also do your part by not limiting yourself cos of a grade you will see how God will open up a way for you.

I also graduated with third class ooo life tire me 4 the city of Abuja, I could not talk where my mates are I was gradually sliding into depression as I had no job nor any1 to even express my feelings to, some how I got a job with a network provider as a contract staff, I did my job well and was never found violating any of the company's rules of business even permanent staff come 2 me when the have irate customers cos I was work as a frontline staff even my manager will come around and be like 'u are one of the best hands I have here in this center' but u know what Stella permanent staff who some of them don't even know the job were been paid 150k and above and contract staff were paid 50k but we do the same job and close the same time. I worked there 4 2serious years of my life, took all the rubbish heaped on me by the permanent staff, I could not go anywhere bcos I felt no one will offer me a job with my 3rd class but one beautiful day while I was on duty doing my thing and going the extra mile to deliver exceptional customer care service a lady 4rm another network provider came in2 the office probably to carry out a market survey and saw me doing my job with great smile and gladness she called me and asked me if I will want a change of job that she sees how dedicated I am to my customers and the first thing I said was 'Ma I'm a third class student ooo' and then she gave me her card low and behold she is the sales director in her company, well it took me weeks to summon courage to call her bcos I was scared she will rubbish me and my result but then I finally called her, and met with her, and the feeling was wonderful. First she took her time to bring me out of my world of self pity and encouraged me and then she collected my result and told me that here in her office she will put my name on the recruitment list but I will have to fight it to get the job so I should go and read wide wow it sounded like a huge joke but the long and short of the story is I'm a permanent staff with a reputable network provider the very 0809ja and u know what dedication pays I have been able to do my PGD and masters just started life has never been the same for me and I'm grateful to God. Typing this brought a lot of memories to me and tears too pardon any error u may read as I'm in tears right now. God still work wonders he is not a partial God he does 4 one what he did 4 another if only we can wait on him. I hold this brings a smile to some1 out there struggling cos ur day of relieve is close. Thanks and God bless every one.

    5. Dey only accept 3rd class for professional prgrms like MBA, MPA, MILR etc. Professional prgrms are not thesame with academic ones, so d criteria for admission usually differ. For LLM, M.Sc, M.A, or M.Ed that are academic degrees, no university within and abroad will admit u. I think u have to study for a PGD before proceeding to d Master Degree. Thanks.

  36. Well, I am also a victim of Third Class, and I must admit, I didn't make enough effort. I started my Year One poorly (Second Class lower) and ended in Third Class, despite having an extra year in the university. I know several of my mates too who had a fantastic beginning, but still nosedived into Third Class. It's quite unfortunate that due to the high rate of graduates leaving the Universities, this is the only way employers can sieve out unqualified candidates. There was a particular bank I went for an interview in and they said that it was only Third Class graduates that should apply for a demeaning job. Employers vary.. Some prefer Third Class graduates cuz of the ability to pay little salary. Most employers don't like to bear running costs of salaries. Third Class is not the end of the world. It's very tough, the shame won't go away, but self reliance is still the best option eventually.

  42. How the third class came about doesn't matter... The stigma and overcoming it is the crucial thing. Its easy to advice if you didn't pass through this but I'll tell y'all it wasn't easy. The shame of admitting it among your peers, the humiliation in front of a potential employer, the disappointing looks on your parents/sponsors... Its like nature is waging a war against you.
The first solution to this is acceptance and openness... If you can conquer that, half of that battle is solved.
Next is to ask yourself what next? This question is what will determine whether you wanna go back to school, look for a job that will accept your grade or maybe go into business.( some prefer to escape by travelling out). In my own case, immediately after service year(2005), I did a PGD and today I've got my Masters.
Most importantly, turn and go to God, surprisingly He is the only one that hasn't judged, pitied, looked down on or even casted you out. You are always brand new when you get to Him.
I spent 3 years at home before I went back to him( that was an awfully long period, but it took that long to meet the right person to tell me the hard truth)
Third class is not the end of your lives... It never ended mine it only showed me who I really need to depend on... God or Economy... I chose God and I've never regreted. I've been gainfully employed since late 2008... I've got my own budding business and its all glory to God.
Advice to those in school, always check your results and make sure you are serious with your studies from day one or henceforth... And be close to GOD.

  43. My boss made a third class. As a Director,he's the leader of the "think~tank" in our Federal parastatal. He doesn't hide the fact at all. I suspect he uses this info to question,if not shame our education system. Professional competence has very little to do with re~writing crammed or rehearsed dogma of some philosophers\leaders of thought\scientists, who most probably never saw the four walls of an ivory tower. Oh! We are Nigerians! Yeah! First class if you pls! You can be a dunce or "dundee united", but its great that your cv states upper credit...Go figure!

  44. Kai! My papa and my mama would have buried me alive if I had come out with third class oh. Cos the environment alone no go even permit such. Tony Elumelu and the likes of Chief Iwuanyanwu are products of that class grade but they are big time business moguls. So I think determination to succeed is not meant to be limited when you have such grades. If e too bad, you further your studies with PGDE courses and Masters nah. Those ones will override the previous grade. But on another note, babes these days no de gree read book. Na runs and aristo studies beget them these days . Lol.

  45. Dear Omo...I am proud of you even though you are not yet done.Your spellings are still awful though.

One thing I have come to realise is
Most extremely rich men in Nigeria speak the worst english you can ever think.
Education is good but education has never defined a man.
Degree does not define a man.
My God is not a respecter of degrees when he blesses.

How is it so that most first class students end up working for the third class student or for the ones that didnt even see the four walls of a university?

If you have a third class...go and apply for jobs, do not allow your mindset to limit you. You will get it.

Anyways, went to a big coz of mine and he said he can't help me cos of the result. For 3yrs I searched for a job even took exams for Nigerian Shippers Council and EFCC where I passed very well but denied in the name of Federal Character (NSC was cos the Director Mr Ajia, a pastor of RCCG wanted his relative). I moved to another city and opened up my company now I'm earning all on my own by His Grace. People who meet me don't believe I made a 3rd Class and I thank God.

  49. I graduated with a third class too and it left me with inferior complex.
I had a misunderstanding with a lecturer. Before the misunderstanding, my GP was 3.2 after the misunderstanding several things happened and I never bothered to find out what my GP was. It was a 2.something but I didn't care anymore.

When I graduated I was always scared of presenting my results when a company accepted me. Nestle accepted me immediately but I had to go back to school to do my extra year.

I was angry with the woman for a while. Today I am a social media manager who earns a good salary and I am running my business. I haven't started making my millions but I am hoping to get there soon.

Don't let it discourage you. When you go for interviews, speak loudly and speak confidently and let the prospective employers know your skills and understand that you are a hard worker who is willing to bring value to the table.

Let them know what you have to offer upfront before you present them with your CV. Also constantly be adding value to yourself and investing in yourself, most companies love that.

  56. Hmmm, if u graduated from AAU like I did, you would understand that graduating with 3rd class has nothing to do with being dull or not taking your studies seriously. I mean in an institution where u block(pay) for everything? Even to stand on a queue, you go pay. Most of the students that graduated without 3rd class, bought their results. Yes it is true dat d society frowns at 3rd class, but personally, I am not a fan of degree. Be it 1st class or Pass. Your degree is just a summary of what your lecturers think of the four/five years u wasted in d university. A degree doesn't define you destiny. If you think it's a lie, ask those who graduated with a 1st class/2nd class, and are still frustrated trying to make hands meet. Or ask aunty Stella who graduated with a 3rd class, and is leaving better Dan a whole lot of pepo. So my dears, if you have a talent/hand work, go after dat with everything you hv, and to hell with dat 3rd class and who ever is affected by it. Life must go on.

I ve gone out with highly educated ladies, done business deals with very brilliant minds who took it for granted that l must be some egg head.
It's all in you. Your confidence, passion positivity would take you father than some diplomas or degrees.
However, making a 3rd has so many downsides, you may loose opportunities in recruitment drives of some orgs, but if you'll summon your inner strengths to convince those around you that you are worth much more that the place called third, your applause would ring louder than even those that topped the list.

  65. I read the post about 3rd class and decided to share mine with u.

I am 27years old, i studied microbiology and graduated with a 3rd class, my family practically disowned me, no one ever believed in me. I won't lie to you, I was completely disheartened because my family made me believe that I won't go any where in life with my degree. During my service year, I was posted to serve in one of the ministries in Abuja. Ministries usually don't retain people, so I set out to look for a job while I was still serving. One day, On my way to CDs, I met a lady at the bustop, we got talking and exchanged contacts. Luckily for me, she said that her office is new in town n that they are looking for staffs. As God will have it, I was interviewed and I got the job. Fortunately, the job was a shifting job because it was a British owned firm, so I was serving and doing the other job. Few months into the job I got promoted, and guess what promotion kept coming and coming. After 2years at the British firm, I resigned. I stayed at home for a month, before another job offer came. I was offered a manager position with a multinational company, I get travel every part of the world and meet lots of people. All my life, none of my employers has ever asked me for my certificate, all they require is my skills and capabilities.
Stella, I am young, but God has richly blessed me with so many resources that sometimes I begin to ask if I really deserve it.

Having a third class is not a barrier rather one should see it as an edge to strive hard in life. Bear in mind that God's grace surpasses all.

  70. All the stories here are encouraging and I am sure the blogvisitor is already charged for success.
On the flip side, I was 2nd best in my class, narrowly missed first class by 0.16. Served and searched for a job ( solicited and unsolicited) like mad and nothing came out of it. Moved on and got married and enrolled for MSc and topped the class with a demanding pregnancy and I am yet to have a breakthrough. But I know that God is God and He sits on the throne.
My take however is that the younger ones in the university should not rest on their oars. Study hard, pray hard and make something good out of your stay.

  72. I graduated with a 2.2 from OAU but guess what? I was on 1.6 GP in 100L and managed to enter 1.98 GP 300L 1st semester. Majorly because I had financial problems, a sick mother and a useless father. After I saw my GP in 300L 1st semester, I took a long walk and asked myself how my mother would feel after struggling to look for money to send me to school so that I would not follow boys. How would she feel after sufferring so much even with her bad health. After my walk, I was determined to excel. Fellow BVs, you wont believe that from 300l 2nd semester to 400l, I had 4.9, 5.0 and 5.0 GP. In the end, my cummulative GP was 2.65. I was so happy. Everyone knew me, I became better than the 1st class student in my dept. My lecturers advised me to spread my courses and give myself 2 extra years so that i could finish with 2.1 but I knew that the financial implication would have been too hard on my sick mother. I am very proud of myself and my result and as God will have it, that same determination and focus helped me to get good jobs and rise to the top. Today I work at one of the top 5 multinationals in Nigeria. Determination and God is key. Thanks Stella for letting me thank God for my life via this medium.

Fellow BVs don't ever limit yourself if you had third class.I have a friend who graduated with a third class even after having 2 extra years,I admire her strength and focus.she didn't give up even when I came back from service and she was still trying to pass a course(we were actually mates). But she kept confessing what she wants and neva looking at her circumstances.I finished with a 2:2 but I stayed at home for like 3yrs before getting a good job while she didn't even stay one month at home. She did her NYSC at a multinational where she actually began her career. Now we both work at the same place while she earns far more than and the company is even sending her to various countries including US for trainings.I notice that third class holders tend to be more successfulare t than other holders because they like to prove that being a third class cannot limit your progress which I strongly agree. My friend has a lot of dreams which are already coming to pass like she is concluding her Masters and even planning to do more,I admire her strength and focus no be small

She later confessed to us that our parents didnt allow her study the course she liked so it was a case of her studying the course they liked just to please them.Today,I m proud of her cos she's doing well.
Having a third class is never the end of the world.

  77. Sometime ago, I heard that you will value the challenges life throws at you when you hear the challenges of others. .those of you complaining of having 3rd class, I laugh at you. .what would you say of my case, I did two extra years in a school in port harcourt because of my association with the wrong crowd and I didn't like the dept I was in so I didn't even bother to attend lectures. By the time I realized my mistakes, it was too late as the carryovers were too much..I couldn't graduate because of my refusal to heed to good and sound advice now I am starting all over again..I wrote jamb and post ume and thankfully got admission without sorting...I got depressed, wept, was mocked by the world but in all these, I'm alive and I am positive that at the end of it all, my story will motivate and encourage young girls..my mates that are done with nysc still come to me to proof read application letters and cv's..so my fellow bv's please appreciate your 3rd class and love it..p.s (the thought of four more years of school fees still gives me headaches)

  78. Yes I did graduate with a third clss, and did believe my world haS ended. I was too ashamed to even open my mmouth to saY that after my extra year in school I still graduated with. Third class and it did affect my self esteem for some time but I went to God in prayer that my degree will not limit me in any way, that I will have the best jobs possible and not settle for anything less.

I now have 2 masters degree and thee best job for now and I have not recycled my peak yet..
