PISTORIUS Jailed For Five Years.

South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has been jailed for five years for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Judge Thokozile Masipa, issuing the ruling in court in Pretoria, also gave Pistorius a three-year suspended sentence for a firearms charge. Pistorius has been taken to the cells.
The prosecution had called for a minimum 10-year sentence; the defence for community service and house arrest.

Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide but cleared of murder.
Judge Masipa began reading the sentence by saying that, although she had been aided by assessors, the decision was hers and hers alone.
She said: "Sentencing is about achieving the right balance. Sentencing is not a perfect exercise."

She said there must be a balance between retribution, deterrence and rehabilitation.
The judge then summarised the evidence brought before the trial.
She described the evidence of defence witness and social worker Annette Vergeer as "slapdash and disappointing".
Ms Vergeer had argued Pistorius would be "a lot more vulnerable than the normal man" in jail.
But Judge Masipa said she was sure prisons were equipped to cater for the requirements of a special needs inmate.

Judge Masipa has ruled in a trial that has captured public attention in South Africa and beyond
She also said she had a "feeling of unease" at what she called an overemphasis on the athlete's vulnerability.
However, she said Pistorius had made an "enormous contribution to society", in his charity work and in changing the public perception of disability.
The judge then read out a quote from previous legal opinion, saying that if sentences were too lenient, the administration of justice may fall into disrepute.
She said she found the suggestions of sentences made by defence witnesses "not appropriate".

Pistorius, 27, an amputee sprinter who became the first athlete to compete in the Olympic and Paralympic Games, killed Ms Steenkamp on Valentine's Day last year.
He says he shot her by mistake, fearing there was an intruder in his house in the capital, Pretoria.
Ms Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model, reality TV star and law graduate, was hit three times by bullets fired by Pistorius through a toilet door.

Oscar Pistorius shot dead Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day last year
Last month, Judge Masipa cleared Pistorius of murder, but convicted him of culpable homicide, saying he had been negligent.
The high-profile, seven-month trial has captured public attention in South Africa and beyond.

There was no legal limit on the length of a jail term, but experts say the typical maximum sentence for culpable homicide is around 15 years.
However, despite the sentencing being announced, the case may not be over.

Both the prosecution and the defence have the right to appeal against the sentence.....BBC NEWS

South African judicial system is corrupt and unstable. Just 5years for a case as grievious as this, is a way of saying, "boy well done".

  12. Fair play.

5 years okay since he was cleared of murder.

I'd rather a guilty man walks than an innocent man looked up for a crime he didnt commit. We will never know for certain that he shot the poor girl intentionally.

    1. God bless you! Nothing they'll say will change my mind that he killed her in cold blood. The first bullet hit her in a way she would have been able to scream, yet he claims the sound of the shot was ringing in his ears so he couldn't hear.
I wonder how his depraved supporters will feel if Reeva was their sister. Reeva's poor dad even suffered a stroke as a result of this.
5 years with just 10 months actual term is an insult to the memory of that poor girl.
Now every disabled person with evil motive can kill someone and claim "Oh poor me, I was vulnerable and I thought it was an intruder" and will have to be considered same as Oscar. Stupid judge has started something she won't be around to finish.
I still dey vex baaaaad over this issue.

By the time he is 32 he will be out and life goes on for him. 30 years or more would've been ok.
    I'm so pained!
No matter the name they give his crime, we all know he murdered that lady in cold blood. It was premeditated.
Didn't follow the trials that much but from what I gathered, he comes off as insecure, possessive and hot tempered.
Oh well, lucky him. He should thank his lawyer.

  29. Personally, I felt he should've been found guilty & convicted of murder. But the law doesn't give judgment based on sentiments but hard, incontrovertible facts, which apparently, the prosecution didn't have or couldn't prove. Throughout his trial & like the judge rightly mentioned, all I saw was a man who tried to pin his actions on the fact that he's a double amputee, thus has some insecurities. Is five years enough sentence, which I read might just be 8months of actual prison term & then he's released to go home under strict conditions, to complete the sentence, isn't fair enough punishment. He should've been handed the maximum sentence for culpable homicide but then, he gets a slap on the wrist. My concern is if Oscar Pistorius were to be 'black' & he murdered Reeva Steenkamp in the same circumstance, would he have gotten similar sentence? Kudos though to the South African justice system for ensuring a speedy conclusion of the trial; Nigeria can learn from them in that regards.

  30. Am happy Oscar pistorius is going to jail
Though to me 5yrs is too light a sentence
Either way he will be in JAIL and that to me is d koko

Am glad he will learn his lesson the hard way!
No one should get away with murder

Judge Masipa,l hope your sentence is torpedoed in an appeal court. You failed the justice system by refusing to give justice to the Steenkamp family.
When Oscar boasted in a club some months back that Jacob Zuma is in his family's pocket and that they owned S.A, thought he was kidding now l see the hand of Zuma in this.
I hope you get your effing prosthetic leg shoved down your ass in the cell you imp and get beaten to a pulp. You temperamental, slimy, heartless son of a gun.
