Health workers in Nigeria began an indefinite strike yesterday October 16th over the unresolved leadership crisis in the health sector.
The Union (under the auspices of Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), comprising of pharmacists, physiotherapists, medical laboratory scientists, dieticians, radiographers/imaging scientists, dental technologists, occupational therapists, health information officers and dental therapist) instructed its members to begin strike yesterday.
The National President of the union, Felix Faniran, said NUAHP did not have any option other than to embark on the strike.
He said it had to do with the preferential treatment for members of NMA against members of NUAHP by the Federal Government, recalling that the agitation of the concerned allied healthcare professionals border on a 12-point demand.
The demands included Appointment of Chief Medical Directors (CM...
Ds) and advertisements for the posts of CMD and medical directors of tertiary hospitals in Nigeria purportedly skewed in favour of medical practitioners and need for commencement of residency training programme for other health professionals as recommended by Abdullahi Bello Committee in 2011.
Faniran apologised to patients and members of the public for what he described as avoidable action, “The government should be held responsible for the mess.Our union’s National Executive Council met between August 28 and 30, 2014, at Asokoro District Hospital in Abuja and gave an ultimatum to the Federal Ministry of Health, which expired on September 30, 2014.
*Outgone health Minister Chukwu could not even tackle this problem wisely?na wah oh,I thought that it had been resolved.

DeleteThe NMA is the body for medical doctors and this one going on strike is dor the support staff in the hospitals.They are asking to also be made head of hospitals like doctors and undergo residency training like doctors.
DeleteThe best way to understand this is to imagine air hostesses want to fly a plane because they work with pilots or stenographers running a court because they work with lawyers.Though they are highly important in hospitals, what they demand is not practiced anywhere in the whole world and just goes to show how far down the pit nigeria has gone that they can even entertain such thoughts logically and even dare to fight for suxh ridiculousness.

I am a physician in the US, and while I may be wrong since I didn't attend uni and med schl in Naija, would like to offer input. Nowhere in the world is a non medical doctor ever the chief medical director, that makes no sense. You can be the health administrator, CEO, but not the "medical director", so that shouldn't even be in the argument.

DeleteElena, it appears viva is bitter so just leave her. It's common knowledge that many in nigeria spend at least 8-9 yrs. My cousin who went to unn did due to the strikes and dr strikes. He is now an accomplished vascular surgeon in the US.

Viva no one is saying the team isn't needed but the ship no matter the skill of the crew still cannot sail with the captain at the head. I know here in the US, this would never be a topic if discussion. Anyone experienced with medicine would never state that a radiology tech and a radiologist are the same. U vehemently fight against the approval of oda profession's residency program simply because u are d only one who wants to be addressed as 'consultants' n None other is qualified to bear that. Each person should be proud of who he is, without striving to become the other man by all means. Note that no matter how long a police man spends in service , he will never become an army general- the police man knows that and will never go on strike for that reason.

You cannot and I repeat u cannot do d' work of a Dr or become a Dr or head the medical team, ur body simply doesn't have the capacity. And as for training, I ask again, training in wot? We practically thot d' various sections all u think u know, yes ask around, we did and this whole petty fight can be summarized in one sentence "una write jamb for medicine, u were not good enuf, so decided to manage d' course u were given and u'all still haven't dealt with those deep seated issues", it's well, wen u need a psychiatrist or psychologist to help u deal, pls let us know we'll refer u to some" oh and contrary to wot u think, Dr's in Nigeria are growing and thriving despite d' little we have to work with. @Adipose yes some Dr's spend upto 8 to 10yrs in medical school not because they fail but because of ASUU strikes and other internal industrial action thanks to Nigeria factor......I know university of ilorin doesn't embark on strike action with ASUU so medical students spend 6yrs and 3months in medical school when they don't have any hitch.

Please where in d world do we have consultant nurses,pharmacists? I think love is the solution to his matter. Doctors are a tad proud and other health workers want to be seen as equal. Which way forward?

After strikes, we dat finished from other depts are rushed and given exams, but it is not the same with med students, they must go through all there postings or whatever they call it.So even when others are moving to another level, they remain where they are... I think their holidays no dey pass 2 wks...... Nothing attractive abt medicine biko, just d name

While doing antenatal in Luth the nurses and others just be behaving like they r mini gods.... The most annoying was going to look for bottle to buy for urine specimen....don't know in what year we will ever catch up with the NHS......
