Documentary 'Finding Fela' Set To Screen In Cinemas Nationwide‏

Fela Anikulapo-Kuti created Afrobeat, using that as a political forum to oppose corrupt Nigerian governments and to advocate for the rights of all oppressed people. He used this medium to express his revolutionary political opinions against the dictatorial Nigerian government of the 1970s and 1980s. His influence helped bring a change towards democracy in Nigeria and promoted Pan Africanist politics to the world. The power and potency of Fela’s message is completely current today and is expressed in the political movements of oppressed people, embracing Fela’s music and message in their struggle for freedom.

The documentary is directed by Alex Gibney and produced by Jack Gulick and
Alex Gibney. The Executive producers were Ruth and Stephen Hendel.  The documentary features a myriad of interviews from all over the world by people touched by the genius of the man; His children Femi Kuti, Yeni Kuti and Seun Kuti, his album designer Lemi Ghariokwu, band member Tony Allen, Sandra Izsadore, Bill T. Jones, Paul McCartney, Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson and many others.

It will be screened nationwide in cinemas in Nigeria as from 17th October 2014 but before then a premiere will be held at the New Afrika Shrine on the 12th of October which is the start of the Felabration week (From 12th October – 19th October 2014)

  3. This man was a genius to say the least. I remember him back in the days of the koolalobitos . I was at a bar the other day and the DJ was playing one of his song (Shakara). He should have something named after, not necessarily a University but a road eg Ojuelegba Fela way, in Nigeria because even though he might have been labeled a rebel back in those days, he really did dig into the conscience of the so called Heads of States at the time with his music. This project better do him justice or else, CBB double Wahala for deadi bodi, or Ojuelegba beating go happen for dem. Peace y'all. I miss Baba 70.

  4. This documentary is a must watch. Saw it last month at the Calgary international film festival. So intriguing, it gave me a better insight and understanding of who Fela was and what he was about. Thumbs up!
