The All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA, on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 held an entertaining concert tagged 'Road to AFRIMA on Campus’ at the Indoor Sports Hall of the University of Lagos which was targeted at communicating the vision and ideals of AFRIMA to the vibrant youth generation in Nigeria, the awards host country.
Present at the concert which also marked the launching of ‘Vote-Not-Fight-Campaign’, were big names in the Nigeria music industry as well as AFRIMA Awards’ nominees and upcoming artistes such as, 2face Idibia, Skales, Naeto C, Jaywon, Niyola, Zeez, Dammy Krane, Queen Moda, Efa, Saeon, Joel, Seriki, Capital F.E.M.I, Tony One Week and many more.
The concert was anchored by foremost Compere and Comedian in Africa, Gbenga Adeyinka the 1st.
Thousands of students adorned in their AFRIMA branded T-shirt attended the concert and were excited to see their favourite artistes perform. Funmi Oguntade, an undergraduate of the Faculty of Law said: “I’m glad to have witnessed such a great concert as this and I look forward to the AFRIMA Music Village and the Award Ceremony in November 4-7 and November 9 because I have heard that popular music stars in Africa and abroad will come”.
Victor Okonkwo, another University of Lagos student at the concert expressed gratitude to AFRIMA for helping them relieve the tension of academic work through entertainment. “This is best thing that has ever happened to UNILAG and we are honoured that AFRIMA is holding the maiden edition of the ‘Road to AFRIMA’ on campus in this great institution”.
The 300-level Economics student added further that, “Personally, I’m a bookworm and anytime I have opportunity for quality entertainment as AFRIMA provided, I jump on it. I hope to attend their events in November, particularly the Africa Music Summit where a lot of discussion will go on about the African music industry”.
The Executive Producer, AFRIMA, Mr. Mike Dada on behalf of the International Committee of AFRIMA expressed appreciation to artistes and students for showing up for the event and for support and commitment towards AFRIMA events.
Voting for winners continues in the 32 categories of the award till November 4, 2014. The main award ceremony comes up on Sunday, November 9 in Lagos, Nigeria. It will be preceded by the AFRIMA Music Village between November 4 and 7; a four day festival of non-stop music and exhibition from African countries and performances by African artistes.
This is followed by the African Music Summit, November 6-7, with the theme “Reviving the Business of Music in Africa". The two-day conference will be a platform for the music industry stakeholders to engage and deliberate on how the industry can be nurtured and be a major contributor to national and continental economies.
