Sickle Cell And Acute Priapism - A Cry For Help From Blog Visitor.

PLEASE READ THIS.

Good morning Stella. How is the family? Please,I need your help by helping me  this on your blog bcos of your kind gesture. My brother is in the emergency ward now at Owo and will be transferred to Lasuth tomorrow. The help I need right now is I read about someone on your blog from the post about sickle cell.

In the comment box,I said my brother has acute priapism which has not gone down for about four days now(he's a sickler). The young doctors tried removing blood from the penis for blood flow)but it went all wrong(as per Nigerian
doctors).

Please,I need to view peoples comment and also the person that said his brother did treatment on that priapism, which was successful. He's in serious pain.I know not everyone is a doctor,I just want to view peoples comment so as to no how to go about it.We also need your prayers...Thanks''

*So I went on google and this is a very serious condition from what i found.

Priapism is a persistent, usually painful, erection that lasts for more than four hours and occurs without sexual stimulation. The condition develops when blood in the penis becomes trapped and unable to drain. If the condition is not treated immediately, it can lead to scarring and permanent erectile dysfunction.
It can occur in all age groups, including newborns.

There are two categories of priapism: low-flow and high-flow.
  • Low-flow: This type of priapism is the result of blood being trapped in the erection chambers. It often occurs without a known cause in men who are otherwise healthy, but also affects men with sickle-cell disease, leukemia(cancer of the blood), or malaria.
  • High-flow: High-flow priapism is more rare than low-flow and usually less painful. It is the result of a ruptured artery from an injury to the penis or the perineum (area between the scrotum and anus), which prevents blood in the penis from circulating normally.

What Causes Priapism?
  • Sickle cell anemia: Some cases of priapism are the result of sickle-cell disease. It has been estimated that approximately 42% of adults with sickle-cell disease will eventually develop priapism.
  • Medications: A common cause of priapism is the use and/or misuse of medications. Drugs that may cause priapism include Desyrel, used to treat depression, or Thorazine, used to treat certain mental illnesses. For people who have erectile dysfunction, oral or injection drugs used to treat the condition may also cause priapism.

Other causes of priapism include:
  • Trauma to the spinal cord or genital area
  • Black widow spider bites
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Illicit drug use, such as marijuana and cocaine
In rare cases, priapism may be related to cancers that can affect the penis and prevent the outflow of blood.

    2. Dear poster, am a doctor and fortunate to witness an operation where they milk the blood out of the penis in a case of priapism. Jist be hopeful ok. Most likely he will be going into theatre today cos its an emergency. As scary as it may look, dont be afraid ok. Google Anne Welsh. She is an amazing sickle cell advocate. She grew up in Nigeria and was able to manage her sickle cell disease. She married a Canadian and was able to give birth to a handsome healthy son. She is ever ready to give every type of support you need. She has a facebook page too. Be positive ok. God is with you.

  11. Sorry...about your brother.... He is been transferred to lasuth right?..good..that's the only advice any sane person or doctors would give.dear poster any other advice you get here would be irrelevant for your brothers present state what you needs is surgical intervention .as per Nigerian doctors?so when something goes wrong na as per Nigerian doctor because the foreign doctors are infallible.... Pssst....I'm a Nigerian doctor I guess my input would be irrelevant I think you should wait for the expatriates docs on the blog....I'm pissed at you about that statement "as per Nigerian doctors "...for your information when a person with priapism is seen at an emergency unit....attempt is made at draining the blood but if it goes wrong and doesn't work the help of a specialist in that area is needed hence your brother's referral to lasuth...(tell your Government to improve the health sector, equip the hospitals, employ specialist since a lot of people supported the sacking of those residents training to be one or else very soon you would be traveling to Indian for management of priapism only a lot of damage would have been incured before the patient gets to the airport). I'm suppose to show empathy to you as per my work ethics but your ungratefulness towards people working hard to save your brother's life is choking the good outta me but I won't let it....

Stella thanks for adding the excerpt on what priapism really means because some BVs won't read, cause they haven't cultivated that culture....they just.jump to comment section and spew thrash.....

Dear poster I feel for your brother really it's just unfortunate that what he needs now is not what this blog can provide this blog can.only.provide comfort for you and tales for people that beat priapism... So here I go...I really do pray your brother pulls through this, crisis IJN

To BVs....I know God works miracles but if you and your supposed love is carrying the sickle cell gene...please call off that relationship don't dilly dally with your presumed faith and put your children on a time bomb...yes they live longer now but then going through any sickle cell crisis is terrible...
    One love

    1. Orela dimple, I do like u, n u sound intelligent, but atimes u can be annoying n irritating. Do u have to dwell on the fact that she said "as per nigerian doctors"? Y not just give her d little help u can afford as a doctor n forget d rest? Most u always drag issues? U seem like a person who wld be so unkind n mean to patients. Pls as a doctor, u need to have an enduring spirit, patience, and kind heart. Its not every bad thing some1 says about doctors that u jump at. U act as if u never imagined that ul survive d study of medicine. I'm a lawyer, I don't exchange blows when people say lawyers are liars, or wen dey call me "charge n bail". I also have my reservations as to if u truly are a medical doctor or are still in medical school. U need to chill and have a bit more sympathy. And u need to check ur English before u hit the publish button. U make a lot of grammatical blunders (not just on this postor blog, but other blogs as well. And no, I'm not stalking u).

Her son got better but her daughter's health kept fluctuating, she did a test n found out her daughter also has it. She has cried her eyes out, meanwhile she's a single mum n the twins dad has never shown interest in them. Honestly I feel for her n do the little I can to assist but it's not enough, all I do now is pray for a helper for her. Told her to think less so she won't develop high BP, me sef tire..

But come to think of it she is not intelligent, Orela strikes me as one who has someone she listens to that has given up on d Nigerian medical system, could be a colleague or anyone close she sees as a mentor. So 24/7 she speaks what that person tells her n feels she has said something so intelligent on Sdk blog. Orela, Orela, Orela, in ur quest to make people think u know much u end up sounding insultive cos u dnt know how to manage words to make u strike others as intelligent, take a chill pill girl, cos it's just Monday morning. U really do not strike me as intelligent, u strike me as an ITK, my opinion.

    12. Orela, you take things too personal at times, you need to learn to overlook a lot of things.
Desyrel (Trazodone ) is an old antidepressant, and it's now used for sleep. Apart from prolonged erection, it gives restless leg, and lucid dreams.
Poster, I wish your brother all the best in surgery. If he comes out of surgery, look for a specialist and see if your brother can be put on hydrourea (it's pretty expensive), but it's for sickle cell patients and it does help, see if it's an option you want to explore.

If some of my very dull secondary school mates are doctors today then any fool can become a dr. One Nigerian dr gave me a vertical incision CS this year 2014 so what are you telling me. It's quite a very painful condtion as sometimes you are tempted to cry along when they come in. Aspiration (don't know if that's the procedure you said failed),use of ice packs and some drugs are usually done/given and when conservative measures fail,a shunt(surgery) is employed!

  41. I'm so sorry to hear this. I made the comment about my brother. His never exceeded a day at a time. Seeing as you are saying 4days, I'll just say the things that helped him at that time, he drank lots of fluid (water, anything) that kinda helped the blood flow, also use ice pack on the penis area. He started having HBP and was placed on different medications for the priapism and HBP. He had the surgery in the US so I dunno much about it, I wasn't there. The specialist doctors at LUTH were very good. @least they knew what they were doing. Poster please don't underestimate the power of fasting and prayer. I know what you are going through and I pray that God that healed my brother would heal yours and put him back on his feet in no time.

  42. Dear Orela Dimples,

How do you manage to make this post all about you. Any post that has anything related to medicine, you drive people away from the issue at hand and make it all about you.

I know patients are ungrateful, they aren't appreciative, you are a medical doctor , you aren't paid well e.t.c but

This post is not about you, it is about Poster's brother.

    XOXO MYSTERY

Your case is so pathetic that even your own fellow Doctors are irritated by your immaturity. Nonsense girl.

    4. @xoxo mystery haba...I didn't make it my own I stated my opinions just like you stated yours....I didn't ask people to forget the matter at hand....the BVs replying my comment can jolly well ignore it and state theirs......I advised the poster...but since most.people calling me. Out didn't read and.digest the epistle they don't know..... Yes I may comment mostly on.health issues that's because I don't rush to comment on topics out of my field that I may not have good grasp on I leave people in those areas to handle that......and to the colleague that feels my diction is appalling... The bone of contention is, did you get the message?

Poster this matter is about you, hope you have gotten to lagos safely?

      One love people

  43. I can imagine his pain and your anxiety, its a good thing you're on your to the hospital, let the docs do their job. Naija docs are not that bad, in fact the genuine ones do their best given the circumstances and conditions they are faced with. We can only pray and hope he gets better. Sorry dear.

  47. @Orela Dim i understand your reason for this long epistle even during the time docs were on strike or are they still on strike.Every normal human being wld like to protect his or her profession but think about it many Nigerians doctors lack the knowledge of medicine even though the are trained to be doctors. What about the Uni Lag doctors who are only doctors cos their fathers are professors and nobody dare fail them.Even when some of them are on internship and suppose to be on duty ,they will rather prefer to go visit there boy friends and no doc get mouth.Abi should i talk about this particular case where the doc cut the intestine of the lady patient and faces was licking inside her tummy after an operation. This took the doc about a week to check and it was already late.
