Yesterday on Facebook,Emma Ugolee wrote this interesting write up about waiting for the right time to make the right move and actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde agreed with him and even hinted she had turned down deals and endorsements.
I also heard from some amebos that actress Genevieve Nnaji had also in the past turned down mouth watering endorsement deals.
Emma Says..
''Years back, the world health organization (WHO) chose two Nigerian music icons to make a hit song to raise the street level consciousness on family planning. One of the icons refused to be paid for the job and wanted to be compensated via royalties. The other, who seemed better enlightened wanted the MONEY, CASH NOW!!
Well the song went on to become a monstrous hit, the royalties are still coming in over 20years later for the person who choose royalties. The other party? Well let's just say must wish that he/she had listened to the money's plea to "wait for me, baby plan with me".
Bob Marley and Fela's children would eternally benefit from the same insight by their fathers.
Same deal Al pacino struck with Scarface, the movie, Stallone with Rocky and Arnold with the Terminator series.
The lesson is clear.
Whatever the amount of money or gain, never negotiate exchange for your talent or skill on a short term basis of advantage. Never be blinded by the immediate size of what is dangled b4 you. Always be sure the worm wasn't lowered into the water with a hook.
If walking away completely from an opportunity to make quick pay would save you the face, dignity and potential to make more tomorrow, please walk away.
Start now if you haven't, to say no to offers that open small windows and shut major doors. .

*Some actresses i know have even jumped at 200k endorsements just to be called ambassadors of a brand and lost out on bigger deals...

DeleteYeap,Hard work pays wen laced wit patience
DeleteThe two icons they r talkin about is onyeka onwenu and sunny ade in that their hit song called 'wait for me'
ReplyDeleteI don't knw which of them signed for royalty and which one signed for cash tho. But I'm guessing King sunny Ade.
Well sometimes it's gud to wait but also it might end up being a bad deal for the 'waiter'
Im sure SA took the cash and OO royalties, why? Sunny ade has plenty children to cater for so must have had lotsa responsibility. We all know women are smarter so OO went for royalties

*Sweetness*
Correct...so true
ReplyDeleteThe clue as to who took what is in the article. Onyeka Onwenu (the seemingly enlightened one), went for instant gratification while King Sunny Ade went for royalties.
ReplyDeleteGo back and read again because this your clue is crap..
DeleteI'm sure Sunny Ade chose royalties while Onyeka wanted immediate cash...
ReplyDeleteOmotola probably turned those deals/endorsements down because the money wasn't good enough. Abegi!
ReplyDeleteGbam... he said it all.
ReplyDeletePatience is really a virtue.
ReplyDeleteGood for them.
ReplyDeleteNice write up by Emma Ugolee. I'm curious to know who took the cash and who waited for royalties in the case of Sunny Ade and Onyeka. I remember hearing that song played over and over again everywhere in the 90s.
ReplyDeleteSDK decoders abeg una fit decode this one?
Who is more enlightened between the two of them? Note "the seemingly enlightened one went for cash down"
DeleteMan problem with most B'S be say una no day digest story before una type
Unfortunately, this same approach is applied by ladies in marriage! Due to desperation, impatience and as bizzare as it may sound, competition they end up with either the first man that opens his mouth to talk about marriage or an obviously bad choice of a husband.

Yea well said. Sooo true. As a lawyer I drafted an MOU for a client who had an agreemnt with a family to sponsor d survey of dia family land cos dey dnt hav d money to do that & in return he gets 1 plot each on every acre. The land ws about 500 acres & my direct client got about 500plots of land. Now he askd me aw much for the agreement & also d deed of assignment I prepared which conveyed d said 500plots to him. I tld him I dnt wnt him to pay me. D only tin I wntd frm him ws to mk me d lawyer in charge of the property. Meaning any body dt wnts to buy weda frm him or d family wud hav to pass thru me. Now a plot of land thr is sold for #4m. I mk about 400k or 200k on each plot bought depending on d agreed percentage. & until those lands are all sold i'll kip makin my doe. Wisdom is indeed profitable.
ReplyDeleteyou too much.
DeleteHmmmmm !!!!! Here you are exhibiting what I was ruminating about this morning concerning Joel osteen' post " you can have average talent but when God breathes on your life you will go further than people than have great talent. Don't talk yourself out of it " voila !
DeleteEVEN IF ONYEKA O TOOK CASH, THE MONEY SHE HAS NOW IS FATTER THAN ALL U GUYS PUT TOGETHER. SHE PROBABLY INVESTED WELL PLUS SHE IS A POLITICIAN.. MONEY ALWAYS ROLL IN FOR THESE NIGERIAN POLITICIANS MEHN.. AM SURE SHE'S STILL RICHER THAN SUNNY ADE
ReplyDeleteAND BOTH GENE AND OMOTOLA TURNED DOWN ENDORSEMENT DEALS COS OF THE MONEY/AMOUNT INVOLVED .. NOT COS OF ANY ECONOMIC INSIGHT.
I wonder why people think KSA an artist of international repute of over three decades and dozen of musical deals and endorsement, own a recording studio, label owner will take cash and not royalties.....where is your common sense?
ReplyDeleteWait what am I doing here? ^'^
