A trial of a potential new vaccine against the Ebola virus is under way in Oxford.

President Goodluck Jonathan promised yesterday that by next month, the security challenge posed by members of the Boko Haram sect who have engaged in massive killing and wanton destruction of property would change drastically. This is just as the troops have killed 60 of the insurgents.
Speaking yesterday at the 66th National Executive Committee, NEC of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, President Jonathan who admitted that the nation’s greatest challenge was that of insecurity, stressed that what obtains presently in Nigeria has gone beyond terror, but plans to secede where members of Boko Haram want to install their own leadership.
...........................................................................................................

WHEN the Australian negotiator, Dr Stephen Davis, alleged that an unnamed top official of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was among the sponsors of the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria many people took his words with a pinch of salt as he had also named a former Chief of Army Staff, retired Lt Gen Azubuike Ihejirika, and former Governor Ali Modu Sheriff.
Nigeria’s Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has added his voice to this allegation, affirming that his own independent inquiries showed that the same individual is indeed culpable. He went on to say that the name of the person has been made available to the highest authority in the land.
The question on the lips of Nigerians is: who is this person? What is so special about him that he cannot even be named? Why can’t he be brought out for the public to see the person who has helped in sending thousands of Nigerians to their early graves while the nation is faced with the greatest threat to her unity since the Nigerian civil war nearly fifty years ago? Why has the CBN remained mute about this issue, since its name is being dragged to the mud? Why hasn’t the CBN seen it fit to tell Nigerians what it knows about this matter?
Happily, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), a social crusader organisation, has taken up the gauntlet and given the CBN a fourteen-day ultimatum, based on the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act. SERAP demands information about the persons involved in the money laundering and sponsorship of Boko Haram sect. A statement from the group said the CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, is required to explain the exact nature of any such transactions.
We commend SERAP for wading into this matter clinging to the force of the FOIA. We are waiting patiently to see how the CBN under a new manager, Emefiele, will respond to this challenge. It will be a major metric for measuring the seriousness he attaches to his work and the need to keep the Bank clean of scandals.
We are greatly worried that the Presidency and the security agencies have chosen to keep the Nigerian public in the dark about the truth or otherwise of this individual’s involvement.
Although the very thought that an individual in the top echelon of Nigeria’s ultimate Bank and regulator of the financial system will become a bankroller of our enemy, yet it is only such a high level conspiracy that can make Boko Haram to grow into the monster it has become.
When this fellow is identified, tried and convicted, we will expect him to face the full wrath of the law.

An Igbosere Magistrate’s Court in Lagos, yesterday, remanded in prison nine people including eight family members on alleged murder of a man over land dispute.
The accused are Latifu Olarinde, 67; Sanni Olarinde, 32; Yusuf Olarinde, 31; Idris Olarinde, 26; Jide Olarinde, 27; Shola Olarinde, 24; Temitope Olarinde, 31; Usman Olarinde, 24; and Samuel Adebisi, 22.
They are facing charges of conspiracy and murder.
The Magistrate, Miss Olanike Olagbende, who gave the ruling, said the accused should be remanded at Ikoyi Prisons for 30 days pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions, DPP.
Her words: “I hereby order that the defendants be remanded in prison till October 20 pending advice from the office of the DPP.”
Earlier, the prosecutor, ASP Charles Odii told the court that the accused committed the offences with others still at large on July 15 at Abule Ado in Satellite area of Lagos.
He alleged that the men shot and killed one Olajuwon Olawepo over land dispute.
“The accused also opened fire on policemen who were dispatched to the scene to restore order, but luckily they escaped unhurt,” he said.
Odii added that Latifu, the oldest among them and self-acclaimed Baale, led the group.
The trial took another dimension when Idris, the 4th accused, told the court that Olawepo was an armed robber.
“The person we shot was an armed robber my lord,” he said.
The offences contravened Sections 221 and 231 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Meantime, a Mararaba Magistrate’s Court 2 in Nasarawa State, yesterday, remanded a 55-year-old ex-soldier, Ali Obenta, in prison custody over alleged resistance to arrest.
Obenta, who resides at Masaka, is facing a three-count charge of criminal intimidation, cheating and resistance to arrest.
The Senior Magistrate, Mr Jeremiah Danladi, refused an oral application for his bail, filed by his counsel, Mr Obolo Austine.
Danladi adjourned the case to October 10 for hearing.

In a bid to launch an effective ombudsman for the country, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, yesterday, said that the Public Complainants Commission, PCC, as currently constituted and operated in Nigeria, had failed to meet the purpose for which it was established.
Tambuwal made the assertion upon declaring open a one-day public hearing on “The Bill for an Act to Establish the Public Complaints Commission with wide powers to inquire into complaints by members of the public concerning the administrative actions of any public authority and companies or their officials, other matters ancillary thereto.”
Organized by the House Committee on Public Petitions, the thrust of the hearing was to seek public opinions on the repeal and re-enactment of the Public Complaints Commission Act.

Amnesty International has challenged the Federal Government to criminalise the use of torture by the Police and military as a tool of investigations.
The movement stated that the military had detained, at least, 5,000 persons for terrorism since 2009 when military operations began against Boko Haram, many of whom, it alleged, were tortured or otherwise ill-treated.
The police and the military routinely torture women, men and children – some as young as 12 – using a wide range of methods, including beatings, shootings and rape, Amnesty International said in the 2014 report presented to journalists on Thursday in Abuja.
The AI Research and Advocacy Director, Netsatmet Belay, who presented the report titled, “Welcome to hell fire: Torture and other ill-treatment in Nigeria,” said AI would continue to engage the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights to investigate cases of torture by the police and the military in Nigeria.

The ongoing strike by the nation’s oil workers has started to deal heavy blows on FCT as long queues have become very visible at filling stations around the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The strike, which commenced on Monday, chiefly resulted from the withdrawal of the operating licence of the NNPC/Department of Petroleum Resources’ closed pension scheme. There are however other demands put forward by the protesting workers, especially with regard to the ‘resuscitation’ of some ‘dead’ refineries in the country.

Hello Aunt Stella,
I'm writing to let you know about the increasing robbery rate at oshodi. Its just becoming too terrible. Any little traffic and these boys just burst out from nowhere and start surrounding cars. The worst part of this all is that it doesn't matter if it's day or night, they still carry out their evil.
Last week I got robbed at 9am of a lot of valuables, yesterday, my husband almost got robbed and he also experienced about 4 cars that were robbed around him at about 10pm. The police need to do something about this and quick as well. Oshodi is slowly becoming a no go area because of these boys.
Please aunty Stella post this mail so that hopefully if it gets to a top security operative something would be done, and quick too.
Thank you
Frustrated Blog visitor‎

  4. To the person whose dad is sick,u can sue your employers depending on your terms of employment,ie what u signed for before u were employed. As a worker u have some days of leave during the year and sometimes u can ask for leave when there is an emergency, even if u have exhausted your leave for the year your fathers condition is a grounds on which u can apply for leave,if your employers sacked u bcos u took a leave of absence(whether formally or not)u can sue them for damages. The courts have the tendency of supporting the weak and vulnerable against unconscionable policies,so even if ur terms of employment warrants a sack in such circumstances it will be unconscionable and against the law of equity and the courts do not condone such,so pls see a good lawyer and I'm sure all things being equal u can get some damages for ur troubles.

  42. Stella are you a learner? Her hubby is having affairs with your blog. Probably cannot say ten words without referring to something he read on your blog or something you said, may be he even asked her to learn one or two things from you and your bvs. Lol. And she has proof too (the bookmarking). Cut her some slacks she is hurting. No mind me I haven't come across her comments.
The guy that raped a three years old baby should be locked away and the keys thrown into a lagoon. How could you hurt a child?

  46. Stella you should know that your blog is depriving the Wife of her husbands' affections.Rather than perform his matrimonial functions, you are there sleeping with the husband through your blog. She does have evidence.

Eva is a wonderful rapper. Am shocked that such a tallent could come out from Nigeria. The Isoko youths are changing the negative perception of their parents.

My Group President is also Isoko. He is presently collaborating with the Presidency to create and/or invent One million jobs for Nigerian youths.
