President Jonathan Suspends Striking Doctors.

Suspend Doctors in a Country where the healthcare system is already blind, crippled and without a sense of direction?I dont know if this is a good move at all...I dont know!
What do you think Dearest Blog visitor?

Auspices of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) had embarked on a strike to press home their demand for an improvement in their welfare on July 1 and several attempts to resolve the issue have ended in a stalemate.
The government had earlier accused the doctors of neglecting their oath to protect lives and continue to turn down the request to suspend the strike, particularly during the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus and the ongoing insurgency in some parts of the country.

In a letter signed by Honourable L. N. Awute, a permanent secretary in the ministry of health, the president ordered that the action should take immediate effect. “President Goodluck Jonathan has suspended the residency training
programme for doctors in Nigeria indefinitely for the purposes of appraising the challenges facing the health sector,” read the letter.

“In line with the above, the Honourable Minister has directed that you issue letters of termination of Residency Training appointment to the affected Resident Doctors in your Hospital immediately. “The Board of Management is to take all necessary measures to immediately restore full medical services in your hospital. Note however this is without prejudice to the employment of Locum Physicians on six months renewable contract tied to productivity and good behavior.

” In an interview with TheCable, one of the affected doctors condemned the development, sating that it is an indication that government does not know its priority.
“The federal government should have asked the government of Lagos state that tried toeing that lane, the end result of such action,” she said. “Simply because we demanded for our rights they are attempting to intimidate us. Anyway, let us see who blinks first.

” A source told TheCable that the federal government had directed that local doctors and doctors in military hospitals should be employed pending the time that the doctors are replaced.

    1. One of the problems in Nigeria is union here, association there e.g ASUU, ASUP, NMA, NURTW, even market women union, students union, drivers welfare scheme. They tell us they α̲̅я̩̥̊ε̲̣̣̣̥ fighting for the pple, ALL NA WASH They α̲̅я̩̥̊ε̲̣̣̣̥ all after their personal interest. They want to own mansions, exotic cars α̲̅πϑ other goodies U̶̲̥̅̊ can think of just like these politicians forgetting they are public servants. The politicians they are looking at(or rather want to measure up to) do not stay in office for more than 8years and are looters (am not supporting them sha). So I do not blame the presidency, the money these pple are demanding is just too much.

    1. I feel it's a game. I have also been telling my friends who are doctors that it iis wrong for them to go on strike!
Doctors should be like the army, who cannot go on strike.
I feel it's inhuman for them to go on strike.

Since they are not working and they are happy to see people helpless and die due to lack of medical attention, this should be a welcome development!

  3. I was dazed to see this in the news last night. So after these present consultants and specialists retire, who will take over? Any plans for training future consultants? GEJ and the elites all go abroad for medicals so they can't be bothered. The masses shouldn't let them mortgage their future. Speak up in ur own little way. “New doctors to be employed on 6 months renewable contract basis”- sounds like advice only people like okupe, Abati & reno can give. This is obviously a backward decision.

    4. Seconded. Infact thirded if there is any word like that. The reason for d strike? They don't want nurses and other paramedics to be consultants. For crying out loud isn't that a hierarchical problem? Y can't they sort themselves out? Even with this ebola outbreak they couldn't sheath their swords. If their reason was an increase in pay, or lack of facilities and equipments in hospitals, they would have had my sympathy. But this reason is plain selfish @ d expense of Nigerians. So yes, I support GEJ on this. Cuss me out or bite me if u can.

    5. Money is like 1percent cause of the strike. BTW. People jump on planes to Meet QUACK doctors in India because they are stupid, like you are. NO standard equipment in d hospitals nd you want me to work for a pittance, use open fire to do tests, sponsor myself for training abroad and come back to a crumbling system lesser than my brain power, watch politicians kids graduate as Quacks from private UNI's and open standard private clinics???. I will soooo go on strike. I just lost my respect for the fed Govt, cos if GEJ really did his homework, this path wouldn't have been towed what it means is that he doesn't even know what the strike is about. Respect they say, is reciprocal, If we are respected, we will behave as such. What rubbish! Stella post oo I dey vex.

    6. La effizy it's obvious you just joined the band wagon and don't know what's happening... Kindly try and read the 24 points that was stated as reasons for the industrial action.

    7. @ bitchpls are they the only ones receiving 5k as hazard, other professionals receive the same amount if not less. Their asking for100k hazard allowance, means that the government should get ready to pay nurses 200k as hazard allowance becos even the dumbest person knows that nurses spend more time with the patients, people with open TB,HIV, pack their stool, bath them, dress infected wounds, all sorts. I mean it's glaring from the 1st medical personnel that died from Ebola in Nigeria. All the doctors do is come in once a week at most to document( sometimes without even seeing the patient) or some stand at the doorway, eyeball the patient then disappear. In fact some times is these same nurses that spend their credit, calling the doctors on phone, looking for the doctors all over the place and practically begging them to come see their patients, like you're supposed to remind them to do their jobs.
Now I'm not saying there are no good doctors, there are and I'm married to one, but they are very few and far btwn. These generation of the so called resident doctors are even worse, with the amount of cluelessness they exhibit and mistakes they make, you would wonder if indeed they went to medical school.
The consultants are in a league of their own,you don't even see those ones at all, more than half of them have their own clinics or consult in several clinics at the same time, all on government time! While the rest of them spend their time in govt houses lobbying for one political appointment or the other.

The only ones that make any effort at all are the house officers but u still find truants among dos albeit very few. These houseofficers are students with little or no knowledge at all, they need to work with constant supervision, but u still find them making costly mistakes becos the registrars who are supposed to supervise them shy away from their responsibilities.

I could go on and on, but to what end? I however said all that to say this, Nigerian doctors need to go back to the drawing board. Selflessness which used to be the major character trait of doctors has long been replaced with, greed, selfishness and money mongering. But then again those are the major traits of the average Nigerian. Go figure!

  5. Though I don't really support the president's action but don't you think these doctors have overstepped their bounds? Whatever they are fighting for should be kept aside especially at this time so that they can work together as a team in fighting EVD. I know they are fighting for their rights but they should have considered the situation in the country right now. Sacking them is not the best at all but if u ask me, I think GEJ did it out of Desperation.

  6. That's what the want. With the long strike they embarked on, they rendered themselves irrelevant to the public sector. That's what happens when you feel you are indispensable. Most sick people now had other options. Afterall, with this greater sickness of ebola, they would not have been able to treat jack. Let the govt focus on the doctors and health workers caring for these ebola patients. This I feel is more important than the senge menges. They can continue staying at home afterall they have all been praying for the strike not to end so they don't have to go back to work. Where lies their dedication?

People should put on their thinking caps that's if they have one and ask themselves this question why only resident doctors?what of the consultants, medical officers and houseofficers that went on this industrial action?why scapegoat a selected number? If you all feel yes doctors should be sacked for embarking on this action then all doctors that participated should be laid off.

  23. Nigerians don't really know the gravity of this decision .. .. When these crop of ancient consultants are gone...and a lebanese doctor that was litigated in his own country comes to Nigeria and render crap services....for outrageous bills then Nigerians would really have a revolution....
These outcast foreign doctors would bill you outrageously not in the useless currency called naira in dollars. Trust Nigerians to be so corrupt instead of importing a specialist they will get a quack..and pay him less so they can put the change in their pocket...
Nigerians would be forced to go to medical schools abroad...Hahahahahaha...money that most can't afford..(I still remember the school fees post and those calling out ezenwanyi because they have relegated their mindset to the level of beggars thanks to poverty)...and yes some rich few can afford it...but after schooling abroad won't necessarily want to come back to a country with crippled health system....
The lists of woes to befall the health system in Nigeria and does who depend on it is really long...
Anyway it all boils down to increased mortality rate and in a way that would reduce the population of Nigeria (a good thing in the sight of some)...
Hmmmm, that's my opinion it will differ from most Nigerians because most Nigerians are myopic in thinking (they never look at the bigger picture )...
Some of the so called rich ones that still patronize private hospitals would enjoy.the.luxury for a while but when the consultants that own these establish die..hope they would expect a consultant from a foreign country to come and handle the I'll equipped private hospitals? (you all know the answer).

While some will foolishly be happy leave a petite corner of your mind to ponder why only the resident doctors, the future of the health system? Why did they exclude the consultants, medical officers and house officers?

    3. Exactly, Orela. Nigerians will generally not apply much thought to the implication of this. Imagine where one resident doctor is seeing over a hundred patients a day. The consultants are older and will retire. Let's see how the med officers handle this. People are screaming ebola without paying attention to the issues. Knowing how ill-equipped the shacks called govt hospitals are, if your brother is a doctor will you honestly advise him to see patients without even proper protective clothing made available? When he's not a magician. I really wish we have a system that works. This is just another poorly thought out action. Let's see how it plays out

    4. House officers are those that just graduated from the University and gaining their first real clinical exposure. Still under supervision.
Medical officers are those who have finished their house job and have not started their specialization(residency program)..youth corper doctors inclusive.
Resident doctors( junior and senior registrars) are those that are working directly under consultants after passing a series of exams for their various specialties. They are the ones with the experience, and train the house officers and medical officers.
This is just a short summary.

      Delete
    5. Anonymous I just laff..is it going back to work in the theater with rechargeable lanterns?or attending to your sick and dying relatives with nylon as gloves?

At second anonymous consultants are the specialist, the residents are in a committed phase training to be specialist under a consultant in a particular field.
The medical officers are those who are meant to man the general hospitals as secondary level of health care under some consultants in Nigeria some work in the accident and.emergency of federal teaching hospitals while the house officers are fresh out of med school and they see taught the rudiments..

Now this suspension affects only the residents who are to become your future specialist house officers can't proceed to become specialist if this suspension comes to stay...trust me every other person aside from the residents are still under the fed govt pay roll until further notice or until privatization is implemented

      Delete
    6. Oreola how nice of you. So you know theaters use lanterns and all you could strike for was awarding other medical workers consultancy and directors abi. God is watching you. 25. That is preposterous, to say the least!!!!!!!
You all should go and see how health workers are catered for abroad. No one is saying Nigeria should do exactly the same but improve on current conditions while at that the health facilities have to be worked on too. The government can not even provide health facilities with retractible syringes ie syringes that withdraw immediately after injecting a patient! Something as simple as that! A colleague of mine pricked himself 2 days ago after injecting a patient who was HIV+. He is currently on anti retrovirals. We will know the outcome after a couple of weeks. Several colleagues have come down with hepatitis e.t.c. The hazard allowance is nothing to write home about.
Government hospitals reuse disposable medical equipment(e.g lab slides, face masks, disposable gloves). Imagine that!
How many times has the President sought for medical attention in this country?? Hardly ever, if at all. How about the other law makers and politicians?
    Let me stop for now

While Drs being trained to specialise in different fields and improve the health of the nation are shunned! Are we in autocratic governance? Is Jona a dictator?

There are three laws guiding the establishment of residency training in Nigeria - The Postgraduate medical council act, The NMDC act and the Teaching hospital establishment act. Non of these laws have been repealed. So nobody, not even the President can suspend residency training. The laws can only be repealed by the national assembly

I believe this is a ploy by the govt to disarm the NARD, the 'military wing' of the NMA..hence by the next NMA meeting, the strike will consequently be called off due to the absence of this vibrant group!
The purpose for the strike will therefore be rendered null and void! Then Jona will come and form ' compassionate grounds' and reinstate the sacked Drs. Sly ploy!

Ok they shud call off strike so we fight ebola abi? Fight with what??? Do we have enough PPE(personal protective equipments), is there always running water in the hospital to wash hands? Don't we often run out of gloves or facemasks sometimes!!!!!! Abeg abeg!

  33. All of you saying this is a good move, open your eyes! The group of doctors they sacked are the ones who ACTUALLY know and do the job. The consultants are at home giving orders while the houseofficers are still using you to learn LMAOOOO! Very soon it is in India that you will actually have to go and treat cough as Pearl Peters said. These Resident doctors can easily, I mean EASILY get jobs outside Nigeria. Namibia is in need of foreign doctors cos they don't have enough medical schools to train doctors. Na una go suffer am. LMAOOOOOOO! Nigeria ohhhh! LOOOOL!

  34. This is just a ploy to force doctors to end the strike. In the next NMA meeting, the only doctors in attendance wud be consultants and they will definitely move for the strike to end. Heheehehee!

  35. Its not even Jona I blame sef, its the Health minister Prof Chukwu. What does Jona know abt residency?

The way the profession is now, without specialization, you haven't started. So that means, everyone will go to other countries for residency, those that can't afford the UK and co will prolly go to Ghana and other African countries. Does the govt think these Drs will want to come back, ???? Brain drain @ its peak!

This vicious cycle will go on till there are very few/ no Drs in the country!
The health sector will be trampled ! Zeroed! Nothing!

Jona's advicers look at the big picture for crying out loud.

They whr myopic wen they held the Nigerian govt to a standstill with some useless bargains!!! YES they where myopic wen they sought to negotiate terms of service for both themselves (positvely) and oda health care workers(negatively), where on earth does that happen??? Nigerians are better informed now and i guess docs are beginning to loose public sympathy. Just look @ d comments on this blog and tk a clue to NMA

  39. Stella, these Doctors should even be sacked. They are greedy,self-centered money-mongers. Apart from the huge salaries, they collect 100k a month as hazard money, patients pay 6-10k as consultation fee to see them and it expires after 2wks,so if you have appointment with 2-3 consultants a day,you know what that means. They collect car, house, travel, medical allowances Yet they are crying wolf. If patients decide to damn all consequencies and go on strike also to punish them what will they do? They are way too insensitive, let them stay @home indefinitely. Healing rain!

  41. My comment is specifically for orela dimples...before i start..i would want u to know that i am also a medical doctor...now to the matter i want to discuss...orela i really do not think ur behaviour is befitting for a medical personnel...why do u always come here to fight and insult people...must you respond to every negative comment put here to doctors? I really think u need to calm down because what u r doing here is not going to help our cause..u r only succeeding in potraying doctors in a negative light..with that being said...i will also like nembers of the public to understand that..when NMA decided to embark on this strike action...they did not seek the opinion of all the doctors in the country...some of us dont even fully understand the essence of the strike...in my own opinion..our.nigerian government.needs to sit up and everybody what they deserve..this includes teachers, engineers, health workers, journalists etc...coz if people are well paid and are able to provide their basic needs...our country will be a better place..left to me..the most important people in the hospital are the nurses and the doctors...even the radiographers are more impt then the pharmacists in the hospital setting...pharmacists should be in the pharmaceutical companies developing new drugs..that is what they are meant to do...personally i feel the nurses to leave johesu and fight for their own rights...coz they are the most impt sector in johesu...johesu knows they are nothing without the nurses..however..we need to learn to work together as a team...

    1. My dear I'm not here to fight and insult anyone in respect to their opinions.A lot of us weren't in support of this strike, a lot of us have part 1 and 2 exams we are preparing for......it's just that Nigerian government are always on a stand still except an industrial action is embarked on..and it's appalling to say even the average Nigerian doesn't know what the industrial action was all about.

      Delete
    2. The public already see doctors in a negative light....my comment won't make it worse...until you tell people what actually is you are no different.as regards johesu they formed a union because they felt that they can undermine a portion of the health sector...NMA request concerns those under the body as you well know....if johesu and NMA come together and fight for a common cause there will be a huge sector over haul....like I always tell people the consultants are the major cause of this problem...they are fighting for their pockets...you and I both know that....that's why some of us weren't in full support... My behavior as a medical personel is too be transparent and truthful in as much as we all work as a team everybody has their place and their duties and it's for us to respect one another and the government too should respect us and pay us our dues.

    3. Ada, I love the way you politely cautioned orela. I was on the verge of doing same till I saw your comment . On the other hand, no one is more important than in the other in the health sector. It is this issue of one arm claiming to be greater than the other the other that is out greatest set back in the Nigerian health sector. We all work together for the good of our clients. The health sector will experience a positive boost if all arms can work together in unity and not for personal gain. For heavens sake, when 2 elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers. And the worst aspect is that the governing bodies brain wash their members into believing that its for their good, in the end, its for the good of their pockets. Where there is no unity, why won't clients die unnecessarily. If there was peace, the suspension of resident doctors wouldn't have taken place. My point is: let the younger crop of health professionals of all fields sheath their swords and have a round table talk....and yes. Work in unity and oneness.

    4. Jeez Oreola....did you just write that? Split personality or is it because your fellow Dr called you out? 42. I seriously commend this decision, welldone GEJ!
The truth is these doctors are extremely selfish, which is ironic cos they more than anyone are supposed to be selfless! Their priorities are totally messed up. Like the average Nigerian, all they think about is money, how to increase their bank accounts etc. No patriotism, no iota of selflessness.
Did anyone see their list of demands? Half of it was about other health professionals bearing titles, skipping levels and what not.
Can't remember seeing any one where they demanded improved and standardized infrastructure and equipments.,better training for doctors including sponsorship, more funds for research etc. The major theme of their list was preoccupation with other health professionals, status and money. it's totally sad!
As far as I'm concerned, there's no difference between  these half baked doctors  and Boko Haram, because  the end result is the same- Countless and unnecessary death of innocent Nigerians!

Who ensures that you do not give drugs that interact with one another in the patient and/or interferes with the patient's disease condition? The Pharmacist!

The person that said our hazard allowance is 100k I dunno where u got that info, but our hazard allowance is 5k, N5000 for all cadres of Drs! Can u imagine that?
Even with the high risk of exposure to Ebola, HIV, Hepatits and all the risks involved in the profession, our hazard allowance is just 5k.

How much do u think we earn???

Pls don't come here and talk like you know what you are saying! Kindly get ur facts right.

  46. MY DEAR ORELA PLS SAVE YOUR BREATH. I'M A RESIDENT DOCTOR TOO HERE IN NIGERIA. THERE IS NO NEED TO WASTE YOUR TIME ARGUING WITH NIGERIANS BECAUSE IF WE WERE AS SMART AS WE THINK WE ARE, WE WON'T BE IN THE MESS WE ARE IN. THE ONLY THING I HAVE TO ADD IS THAT EVERYONE SHOULD BETTER GET ENOUGH MONEY TO TRAVEL OUT OF THE COUNTRY BECAUSE THESE SAME RESIDENT DOCTORS ARE THE ONES THAT HELP TRAIN MEDICAL STUDENTS WHEN THEY COME FOR CLINICALS AND ULTIMATELY BECOME THE CONSULTANTS THAT LECTURE IN MEDICAL SCHOOLS. THE END RESULT IS THAT MEDICINE WON'T BE OFFERED IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES AGAIN. AND BY THE WAY, COUNTRIES LIKE SAUDI ARABIA ARE EAGER TO OFFER YOUR DOCTORS JOBS AND THE WORSE CASE SCENARIO IS THAT I OPEN A SMALL "CLINIC" AND CHARGE FOUR TIMES WHAT IS PAID IN GOVERNMENT HOSPITALS AND TRUST ME WHEN YOU ARE ILL, YOU WILL PAY THE FEES IF YOU CAN'T TRAVEL TO INDIA OR WHEREVER. STELLA PLS FIND OUT HOW MUCH DOCTORS ARE PAID IN GERMANY IN RELATION TO OTHER JOBS AND HELP EDUCATE THE CLUELESS BLOG VISITORS TYPING TRASH BECAUSE THEY HAVE A LITTLE MONEY. I FEEL MOST SORRY FOR THE REAL HELPLESS NIGERIANS THAT COULDNT EVEN AFFORD TO PAY FOR THE HEALTH CARE THAT EXISTED
