The Democratic Republic of Congo has confirmed that an outbreak of haemorrhagic fever in the north of the country has been identified as Ebola.
Health Minister Felix Numbi told the BBC that tests on two people had confirmed the disease in Equateur province, where 13 had already died.
But he said the deaths occurred in an isolated area and the disease seemed a different strain to West Africa's.
Dr Numbi said a quarantine zone was being set up to contain the disease.
The cases are the first reported outside West Africa since the outbreak there began.
So far 1,427 people have died from the virus.

The United States has donated equipment worth $5,000 to boost screening of the Ebola Virus Disease at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
The latest gesture is in a bid to further strengthen current efforts at containing the spread of the disease in Nigeria.
A statement by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria on Sunday, said the US Consul General in Nigeria, Mr. John Hawkins, made the donation at the airport on Friday.

Leader of the terrorist Islamic sect, Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, has re-designated Gwoza town that was seized by his men last Thursday as an Islamic caliphate.
Shekau announced the declaration that Gwoza had become an Islamic caliphate in a video obtained by the Agence France-Press on Sunday.

The terrorist also vowed that his group would not leave the town.

A former governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, has alleged that reports from the Judicial Panel of Enquiry set up to probe his administration are being falsified and exaggerated by “government propagandists”.

Nyako, who was impeached by the state House of Assembly on July 15, debunked some of the panel reports in a statement by his spokesman, Ahmad Sajoh, on Sunday.

The Trade Union Congress and civil rights groups have blasted the Federal Government for the rising external debt, which the Debt Management Office put at $9.38bn.
The TUC and other groups, including the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders and the Civil Society Network against Corruption, said that there was no justification for the rising debt profile.
The TUC, in a statement in Abuja on Sunday by its President, Mr. Bala Kaigama, said that it was alarmed by the rising external debt of the country.
Kaigama cautioned the Federal Government to check its resort to foreign loans before the future of Nigeria is once again mortgaged to foreign creditors.

The Director-General of the DMO, Dr. Abraham Nwankwo, had recently told newsmen in Abuja that the country’s external debt was $9.38bn.

Lagos State Taskforce on Environment and Special Offences, Enforcement Unit, at the weekend stormed the hideout of a diesel adulterating syndicate at Opebi area of the state, arresting 10 persons in the process

The team also impounded three oil tankers from the scene. One of the trucks has number plate LAGOS- EKY-251 XF.
The suspects, who were arrested under the Opebi Link-bridge, Ikeja Local Government Area, used to produce and sell adulterated diesel to the unsuspecting members of the public.
The team also impounded several litres of adulterated diesel from the hideout.
It was gathered that the adulterated diesel was produced by mixing large quantity of kerosene with some diesel.
The illegal activities, according to government officials, have impacted negatively on the ecosystem within 100 metres radius.

Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State on Sunday led other government functionaries to a commemorative church service marking the 23rd anniversary of the creation of the state.
Orji said at the Assemblies of God Church, Nkporo Street, Umuahia, that “today is a day set aside to present the state to God’’.
According to him, the remarkable thing about this year’s celebration is the fact that this is the last anniversary of the state creation that I will celebrate as governor.
He urged the people to emulate the life of Christ, in line with the Abia slogan “God’s Own State’’.
In his sermon, the Superintendent, Jerusalem District, Umuahia North, James Ndukwe, urged the people to join the government in its efforts to develop the state.
“My prayer is that God will raise men, who will appreciate what the government is doing at any point in time and lend their support to state development’’, Ndukwe said.
He expressed happiness that the present administration had wrested the state from the hands of “cultists’’ and returned it to God.
He, therefore, urged politicians to shun evil and cult practices and embrace God so that His glory would reign in the state.

Ndukwe, who blamed past governors and their aides for the failure and backwardness of the state, urged Orji to remain focused and steadfast in his good work.

The Federal Road Safety Corps has appointed Corps Commander Stella Uchegbu as the new Corps Public Education Officer to replace Assistant Corps Marshal Jonas Agwu who is now Zonal Commanding Officer in charge of Zone RS7 Abuja at Gwagwalada.

Until her new assignment, Stella Uchegbu, who is a seasoned and thoroughbred officer, was the Nodal Officer at the FRSC SERVICOM Unit at the Abuja national headquarters, during which the Corps received commendable ratings for consistent compliance with SERVICOM principles.

Imo State government has given reasons why it would not join issues with the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, over his recent encounter with Governor Rochas Okorocha.
A statement by the Media Aide to the Governor, Sam Onwuemeodo, explained that, “Imo people and indeed Nigerians who had followed what transpired at the 2014 Iriji Mbaise festival held on Friday, August 15, 2014, would be shocked how or why we have decided not comment on that incident after our only reaction to that dishonourable act by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, in which case, we only took exception to that unprovoked verbal attack against the governor of the state, while still holding the kola he was given to present to the visitors at the event”.
He regretted that Ihedioha and his supporters have continued their media gimmicks to deceive the general public, saying, “on our part, we decided not to comment again on the issue.  And we have our reasons”.
The aide said the state government had discovered that Ihedioha deliberately launched the verbal attack on the governor at the Iriji event to give the impression that he can confront or fight Okorocha in the politics of the state, even when he knew that could not be possible by any standard.

The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, has suspended its over two-month old strike. Its President,Kayode Obembe, who disclosed the development to newsmen, said the association’s delegates resolved to suspend the industrial action in the interest of the ongoing public health issues in the country.
Mr. Obembe said the delegates also resolved among others that the Federal Government recall all suspended resident doctors without punitive measures.

He therefore directed all Nigerian doctors to report to work on Monday.

  23. Stella am not happy, imagine Olukolade calling what boko haram fighters claimed to have achieved an empty achievement. Is he denying the fact that boko haram fighters have taken over Gwoza and declared an Islamic caliphate therein? What military effort is underway to retake what the military has always been failing to hold? We better not allow ourselves to be deceived.

If government knows continuing to fight boko haram fighters over their current success and unbelievable achievement will only worsen the security situation in Nigeria, it is then better to leave the North separate peacefully on its own, so that innocent Nigerians will not be made to pay the supreme price of endless war between the government and boko haram fighters. Enough is enough!

President Jonathan, I personally can't vote for you if you can't protect the lives of Nigerians .

The NMA strike being called off is such a good thing. however, the doctors in the executive level should understand that all this incessant strike at every given opportunity affects those younger doctors and the masses more than they think it does the government.
