Boko haram: soldiers on trial for refusing to fight
Some mutinous soldiers in the Army’s 7 Division have been relocated to another division for trial, it was learnt yesterday. The military took the step to avoid the trial constituting a distraction to the division in its fight against the Boko Haram insurgency. But a source revealed that Buni Yadi in Yobe State is constantly exposed to attacks from Boko Haram because of the “thin presence” of troops in the area as a result of manpower challenge.Although the military is silent on the number of the affected soldiers, the figure is said to be between 18 and 50. A military source, who spoke in confidence, said: “The mutinous soldiers have been taken away from Maiduguri to some divisions where court martial had been on.The soldiers refused to fight saying they are too poorly equipped to take on the heavily armed insurgents.

Governor Chime's Aide says Enugu deputy Governor lied
Enugu State Government has described as false and misleading, the claims by the Deputy Governor of the state, Mr. Sunday Onyebuchi, that Governor Sullivan Chime operates poultry and piggery at the Government House.
According to a statement signed by Chukwudi Achife, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Chime, the deputy governor’s claims were malicious and intended to deceive the public.
He explained that while the government maintained an agric unit as part of the Government House structure, where livestock were kept for slaughter to serve the needs of the staff as well as both the governor and deputy governor’s premises, the unit was neither operated nor owned by the governor.

Ebola : 2 US patients discharged from hospital
The two US patients who were treated for Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, have been discharged from Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.
They had been in an isolation ward since their evacuation from Liberia early this month and were the first patients treated for Ebola on American soil.
An official at Emory University Hospital said that their release posed no public health risk, and Dr. Kent Brantly, 33, called it a “miraculous day.” Brantly and his wife stood holding hands before he read from a written statement.
Brantly said at a news conference announcing his and Nancy Writebol’s release. He spoke at a news conference after his release yesterday.Writebol, 59, was released on Tuesday, and her husband said in a statement emailed by aid group, SIM, that she was free of the virus but remained in a weakened condition and was recuperating at an undisclosed location. Missionary Nancy Writebol was “declared virus-free and discharged from hospital Tuesday,” according to the SIM aid group. After blood tests came back clear, Writebol was reunited with her husband, David, and they “have gone to an undisclosed location to rest,” SIM said.

N200 million Ebola grant to Lagos not from N1.9bn Presidential fund
The Federal Government yesterday said the N200m it gave to Lagos State to assist in managing the Ebola virus was not from the N1.9bn earlier approved by President Goodluck Jonathan to contain the virus. A statement by the Special Assistant to the Minister of Health, Dan Nwomeh, a copy of which was made available also emphasised that more corporate bodies had made financial contribution.A statement by the Special Assistant to the Minister of Health, Dan Nwomeh, emphasised that more corporate bodies had made financial contributions to help government fight the virus. “The N200m is a distinct and direct Federal Government support to Lagos State and does not preclude other assistance that may be rendered to the state through the Federal Ministry of Health,” the statement said.

INEC to use card readers in 2015
Politicians planning to rig the 2015 elections by buying voter cards should forget it. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will use card readers to detect impersonation at the polling units, Chairman Attahiru Jega has said.Prof. Jega explained that on election day, the polling officer will ask the presenter of a Permanent Voter Card (PVC) to put his fingers on the machine for authentication and verification. If it is valid, the machine will say ‘verified’; if not, it will say ‘unverified’. The INEC boss said if the machine says not verified and “such a person is allowed to vote, you cannot blame the Commission for that”.
Jega spoke yesterday at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) where he delivered a lecture: “Stakeholders and the electoral process in Nigeria”. It was organised by the Department of Sociology.
