Lagos Landlords Won't Rent Houses To Single Young Women‏?

''Sdkers, I am tired! Is it a crime to be single?! I'm a very independent young woman and not in a hurry to get married. I'm 27 and the pressure is too much. I've been hurt in the past and I'm definitely taking my time and won't settle for less!

I have been actively house hunting for over 3 months, ever since I decided to expand my thriving business. I work from home. No success yet getting a place because I am single. I get asked very silly questions ‎like where is your husband?
Why does a single girl want a 3 bedroom?  To be single and aspiring to rent anything more than a room self contain is a crime, I suppose. Landlords, turn me back immediately I say single. They claim single girls are promiscuous and loose. What haven't I heard?

The height of it was today when I went to inspect something perfect o! Landlord decided to conduct an interview. I sat, facing 3 men, and the first question was, are you married? It was almost simultaneously. I just sighed. They would rather have a single man.

This is not fair! ‎Has anyone been in my shoes? A friend told me to wear engagement ring and lie the next time I see a potential landlord.

Please if any landlord with 2/3bed house available to rent won't mind a single girl as Tenant. I mind my damn business and have no friends''.

  1. That's unfair, what's the landlord's Business with ur Marital status? His problem should be getting his rent paid on time, Maybe you didn't quite state your source of income.even if you are promiscuous it's not as if you would turn his house into a brothel , next time go with a male relative or friend to pose as your Fiance.

    3. Yes o, one time went to protea with my friend in abuja. They told us we can't sit at the bar because girls in the past use that opportunity to find white lovers. Stella we shock me and my friend had to sit in the pool area to enjoy our drinks o... We talk talk talk ooo, the bar man was like that was the instruction passed to him..... So yes in Nigeria life is hard for all single girls. Even travelling to Dubai alone, and u are a girl.. Customs will frustrate your life at the airport, cos its assumed u are going for prostitution.

    4. I have been in this same situation too. The landlord told me he would not rent to me cause I was single. I was judged by someone I had never met cause I wasn't married.

    6. The problem is that the landlords are afraid and also looking at subsequent rent, bcos most young single ladies have houses rented for them by bfs and sugardaddies who might not be there to renew the rent next year and the gal will start running helter skelter at d same time putting the landlord's biz' at stake, and it's so hard to kick a tenant out of ur house by law!so they are trying to be safe than sorry,so @ poster I don't think it's abt d fact u are not married.if u had a 9-5 job, they feel better abt dat even if it won't pay ur bills!thats how myopic d mindset of our pple is.

    9. What rubbish. Discrimination of the highest order. Some don't even know that with some married couples it's the woman that pays the rent. I don't subscribe to renting a guy to stand as ur man because u want to get an apartment, stick to the truth and you'll eventually meet with a sensible landlord. And besides, such landlords will be all up in ur business even if they let u have the apartment. We know their type. Judgmental fools.

That's why I hardly blame those who are desperate. Being a Mrs saves one from so many embarrassments. Then again a private landlord has a right to set a prerequisite for his property.. but c'mon, why does ur marital status have to get an edge over ur employment status? Nawa o! Sorry dear! Abuja landlords are so different. They no send. When I was in Abuja Nigeria,my BFF( a guy) tld me in honest feeling he prefers ladies in his house than men. The Reason he gave me was that Abuja big chics dnt owe. Ad the keep ur house clean. Ad that's the truth. Sometimes they even go as far as rebuilding ur house for their own comfort. Me for an instant, I removed the Bathtub in my room toilet for a Jacuzzi. Nah I didn't buy it myself. A frd did. Ofcos I left the jacuzzi for my landlord ad the new lucky ternat (A chic too)when I relocated to here. Nne see if u can relocate to the FCT. 3. After saying this I know I will get a lot of anonymous bashing all thru the posts on sdk and in the following weeks to come. But I seriously do not give a flying fuck.

What has this blog become to most of you? While I commend the givers and wish better those who genuinely lack the basic things of life due to one reason or another....i must say that it is grossly repulsive that some lazy asses have turned the kindest gestures of BV's giveaways into their daily manner from above. I am beginning to suspect that most of u come here just to grab airtime and to turn this place into a beggars colony.

On behalf of Stella and well meaning BV' like myself who come here daily and are a part of the family here, I resent ur newly imbibed attitude of BEGGING for anything here. Please STOP that nonsense and fix ur normal life if u have any.

People work hard for their daily returns and are not indebted to no bagga. If anyone is compelled to give let them do so at their convenience. Take it joyfully if u are lucky to be a recipient of the goodies and move on. Don't come under every thread with sulk stories begging for empathy or insisting on any free stuff. It's annoying and repulsive in the least. Haba!!!!

It was fun but it no longer serves the purpose.. using Stella or using her medium just for ur selfish purpose is vague patriotism. There's hardly a day that goes by here that I do not read comments like this, asking for BIS card or whatever else...and I think we have tolerated the crap enough.

I am no mouth piece for Stella or anyone else, am just wondering when people will stop taking advantage of some temporary kind gestures which they now want to turn into a permanent obligation.
Some of u even cuss out those who make promises to u and are get to fulfill them, like say Na dem born una. Although I don't subscribe to anyone raising hopes and not fulfilling them. Then again it is their prerogative to give or not to give.

Please let the originality of this blog be returned to its former glory. If no one gives anything free the true loyalists of SDK shall still remain. Of which I am one of them.

Like I said, I am ready for the anonymous trolls of stalkers on this matter. I will revert to ur grievance once I have the spare time. Rubbish. Outta here.

I think some landlords are scared because some single women rent these houses and invite their "business partners" so that they can easily invite their "clients" there, turning the rooms into uptown brothels....maybe that is the fear of these landlords...That said, you will definitely find a place dear..just be careful so you don't get scammed! All the best...Rock your single life hun...Don't rush!

BTW, I think the 'Landlords' has no reason to deny u an apartment if u can afford one. But then, if the landlords are being heady, try a landlady *winks

  47. That's true to an extent. Try looking for a house in places like Festac, housing estates etc. These areas, u deal mainly with d agents and hardly have any contact with d Landlords. Pls pray seriously before taking up any apartment. Some of the houses u see in Lagos have fetish stories behind them. Its well with u.

  52. Are you a learner?

This has been going on for years in Lagos. A male cousin or your uncle has to pose as your fiance and sign the documents. You can claim he travelled later if the landlord is such a busybody and asks after him.

It's downright crude an archaic but some single ladies don't make it easy for others. Imagine how policemen would have harassed "Aunty Lizzy's" husband if that stupid Smallie had killed her in a rented apartment.

Some landlords have gone a step further and won't rent to bachelors who claim to be self employed, for fear they might be yahoo boys. Those in high brow areas have to tender confirmation letters from their company HR to the landlord. This makes better sense than ruling out spinsters all together

  53. Sorry to ask, but why do you want a 3bedroom flat?

Im a marriage counselor and i advice newly married couples to get 2bedroom flat.
One for them and one for kids, reason being it keeps inlaws and unnecessary guests away.
Having a 3bedroom is almost like an open invitation.
Try to see it from another angle. They are probably wondering what you want to do with a 3bedroom apartment.

So please, be calm and ask yourself if you really NEED a 3bedroom flat.

If you still insist on getting it, get your parents to meet the landlord. Move your things with you, stay a few days and 'go back to the village'. (Village being their own place)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Lol. Only u waka go! Lmao. U better find 1 bobo or ur bro or ur uncle n say na ur hubby n. U'll later say he's traveled out or u say ur hubby isn't in naija! If not, na only u waka come oooo.

  57. D problem with Nigerian bizmen is that they put 2much sentiment yl doin business. L8r now they will say biz aint moving when infact they are their own stumbling block.
It will interest u 2 knw dat its not just single girls dat find it difficult 2 get apartment. I av had 2 wrk with a client dat said she doesnt want d following ppl in her ppty despite d price of her ppty being too high: a single lady (mum or lady), a muslim, Hausa (for always being unreasonable), a member of white garment church, lawyer (which I still find funny by d way) and lastly, an Ibo person (for being very stubborn). At dis point, my boss said madam u do realise dat d guy wh0m u av been wrking with ticks d last tw0 b0xes? Na so she begin apologise o. Till date 0nly 1 tenant has moved in having met her criteria n dis is d 4th month. Now she calls frm europe 2 ask abt progress. So young lady nor vex as u can't quarrel with a landlord 4 not letting out his/her ppty. Better luck nxt tym.

  63. My dear,u will not blame landlords for asking such questions,in lekki, some girls rent houses, the next thing dey turn it into mini brothel, they rent 2bedroom were u will see more than 15girls living there, they pay d lady that rents d house 10k everyweek.it happens in lekki so don't blame landlord though it's discriminatory not to rent houses to single ladies!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Lagos LLs are only being careful.if u claim u are single why do u need a 3 bed or u want to turn the house to a warehouse.most single people that rent 3bed on the island always have interior motive.some turn the other rooms and even the living room to a brothel. They end up putting like 3bunks in a room and charge each chic that sleeps in there 1k per night. The girls are not allowed to bring men in .guys have u bothered to query a girl that u are chasing in lekki or oniru why. U visited her 15times, she has never allowed you into her house and she lives in lekki.if u do the simple maths.the real tenant would probably make times 3 that rent in a year.what of the tenants that are into jazz.once they move in the landlord would forget he ever owned a house in the next 10years.so they live for free.u seff justify why u need a three bedroom or u are trying to rent the apartment for a wanted fugitive.we all have to be careful(landlord and tenant)

  71. What makes it wrong for a Single Lady to rent 3bed room apartment? The reason many people still remain POOR today is their mind set. I just don't know what is wrong with us in this country. Babe (classy)! Take drastic measure and get the apartment, you're left with no choice. I wish you luck.

  72. Most times, the way we dress is the way we are addressed. how did you dress when you went to meet the landlord?. What did you tell the landlord is your source of income or is this your first time of establishing a business. What kind of car are you driving? how did you walk while entering the the landlord compound. All these matters alot. @singles. while looking for a house, please present yourselves as very responsible people in your dressing, words pronunciations and walking steps. Every married woman was once single so there is no big deal about being single.

  73. I have heard this several times over.

some landlords do it to guys also.
they say they would bring trouble (fights and all from girlfriends or boyfriends). they believe being single gives room for irresponsible actions

what so many do now is wear a fake wedding band and take someone along to pose as spouse.

    You should do same.
Play the game and get a roof above your head.

  77. I relocated to Lagos from Ph last year and was seriously looking for an accommodation before hubby will come down to join me, it was not easy getting a place because of agent and agreement wahala. When i finally got one, the first thing the landlord asked was the whereabout of my hubby, when i told him that hubby was still in ph he said that he must see hubby before we start any negotiation and hubby had to leave every thing he was doing just to secure a place for us. That is Lagos for you.

  91. What exactly is the big deal about a single girl wanting a 3 bedroom house. You work hard earn good money and yet you can not enjoy your money so why do people work their asses off? its amazing the comments from people such bigotry. There are women who work hard and run their own businesses as well as women who are executives in companies and yet people come up here asking why someone needs a 3 bedroom house or apartment in this day and age how about this? i have a 3 bedroom apartment, i sleep in one, i turned one into a closet where i store my clothing etc and the 3rd one is a guest bedroom, some people have family and friends who come from out of town, male and female who they don't share a bed with. At this age i don't even like to share a bed with my siblings, NO! i like my privacy and solitude when i'm in my bedroom. Some people also turn the 3rd room into their study/office/den tv room whatever and some people just like space. If you can afford it why squeeze yourself into a 1 bedder or 2 just because people and society think so? never mind you work day in day out so you can enjoy a good life! People seriously need to move away from this kind of thinking. What baffles me is there are actually women on here asking that absolutely ridiculous question why a single girl needs a 3 bedroom apt! Are you frigging kidding me? Are you meant to work your ass off then save the money for when you finally get married so you can rent a house for your husband to live in so society will not think you are a whore renting a house with so many rooms to carry on business? Urghhhh this backward thinking knocks me for 6 every time. Its a wonder we are still so 3rd world!
