Maradonna Says Messi Did Not Deserve The Golden Ball

Argentina icon Diego Maradona feels Lionel Messi did not deserve to win the Golden Ball following his performances at the World Cup.

The Barcelona star beat the likes of Thomas Muller, Arjen Robben and James Rodriguez to the prestigious individual award after scoring four goals in seven performances at this summer’s tournament and guiding his team to the final, yet Maradona feels the 27-year-old only won it for commercial reasons.

“I would give him heaven if possible,” Maradona said during his show on Telesur. “But it’s not right when someone wins something that he shouldn’t have won just because of some marketing plan.”

Maradona then went on to voice his disappointment with Argentina’s 1-0 defeat in Sunday’s final against Germany following Mario Gotze’s goal in extra time.

“I feel sorry for my country. Mario Gotze’s goal really hurt. There’s a huge sadness in my heart that we lost the final,” he said. “All things put together, I think Argentina deserved at least penalties. That Germany won was the result of a misunderstanding in the Argentine defense.”....STORY

The 1986 World Cup winner also had his say on Alejandro Sabella’s decision to replace Ezequiel Lavezzi with Sergio Aguero at halftime and argued that the Argentina boss got things wrong.

“I don’t understand the substitution of Lavezzi,” Maradona said. “He was phenomenal down the wing. Kun Aguero didn’t have the same impact. It was not his tournament.”culled

*I watched all matches and I totally agree with Maradonna that Messi did not deserve the golden ball, they should have given it to Germany's Thomas Muller.

  4. He already has the golden ball. You can do nothing about it. And yes,he deserved it cos only him single handedly brought his team forward to the finals. He did it alone,Argentina had only him.

And I was also angry when aguerro was brought it. He did nothing. Aguerro is dead. He just kept making silly mistakes. I wanted it to end in a penalty though

  22. Chris it is sad when people like you say things like this.wait till something you deserve is taken from you without a fair play, then you will know. I. This match I didn't really see mercy. Robben and the other two were good. Even the match against Nigeria, with every goal Messiah scored, Musa fired back, so what's the fuzz. The guy didn't deserve shit

  23. Not even Muller deserves it buh James Rodriguez..

  25. FUNNY INDEED,MESSI DID ALL HE CAN BUT FAIL TO SATISFY INDIVIDUAL EGOS. IN THE REAL SENSE OF THE WORD,NOT EVEN MULLER PLAYED BETTER THAN MESSI,YU SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT ARJEN ROBBEN;BT MIND YU, FIFA's DECISION WAS NT AN INDIVIDUAL THING.FIFA"s REPRESENTATIVES AS A BODY VOTED WT CRITERIA & STATISTICS FOR THAT MERIT. IN THE PAST W/CUPS,THAT MERIT MOSTLY GOES FOR THE WINNING TEAM...THE DEED IS DONE & I DONT FAULT FIFA AS I BELIEVE THE BODY CANNOT FAVOUR AN INDIVIDUAL WHERE INTEREST ARE MANY

  33. Maradonna is 100% correct. Arjen Robben of Netherland played 10x better than Messi in the competition. the fact that Messi played in the final does not hold any water cus his impact wasn't felt in anyway throughout the game. lets await PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD. NEITHER RONALDO NOR MESSI DESERVES IT. arjen robben played better both for country and club.

  34. Who cares??
Maradona get over it and move on.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Argen Robben should have gotta the golden ball but hey, it's all about marketing.

  36. He didn't deserve it but he has been awarded already. Maradona be criticizing the substitution of Lavezzi, he shld get over himself plz. Like he did any better when he was their coach

  38. I beg maradona should go and sit down jare,he talks too much.when he was the coach of argentina in 2010 what did he do?this same Germany beat Argentina 4nil.messi deserves the award that was given to him.Lionel emerged as man of the match in four consecutive matches, no other player achieved that.my pain is that he did not win the world cup.so haters should go and relax.
