Ebola Alert From US State Department

In order to help our Embassy Community better understand some of the key points about the Ebola virus we have consulted with our medical specialists at the U S State Department and assembled this list of bullet points worded in plain language for easy comprehension. Our medical specialists remind everyone that they should be following the guideline from the center for Disease Control and the World Health Organisation.

 • The suspected reservoirs for Ebola are fruit bats.

 • Transmission to humans is thought to originate from infected bats or primates that have become infected by bats.

 • Undercooked infected bat and primate (bush) meat transmits the virus to humans.

 • Human to human transmission is only achieved by physical contact with a person who is acutely and gravely ill from the Ebola virus or their body fluids.

 • Transmission among humans is almost exclusively among caregiver family members or health care workers tending to the very ill.

 • The virus is easily killed by contact with soap, bleach, sunlight, or drying. A washing machine will kill the virus in clothing saturated with infected body fluids.

 • A person can incubate the virus without symptoms for 2-21 days, the average being 5-8 days before becoming ill. THEY ARE NOT CONTAGIOUS until they are acutely ill.

 • Only when ill does the viral load express itself first in the blood and then in other bodily fluids (to include vomit, feces, urine, breast milk, semen and sweat).

 • If you are walking around you are not infectious to others.

 • There are documented cases from Kikwit, DRC of an Ebola outbreak in a village that had the custom of children never touching an ill adult. Children living for days in small one room huts with parents who died from Ebola did not become infected.

 • You cannot contract Ebola by handling money, buying local bread or swimming in a pool.

 • There is no medical reason to stop flights, close borders, restrict travel or close embassies, businesses or schools.

 • As always practice good hand washing techniques, but you will not contract Ebola if you do not touch a dying person.

    1. You know why these types of disease pass? Because they are manmade. We've been eating chicken and eggs for ages how come all of a sudden birdflu started? Manmade.. people have been eating bats and bush meat for ages too but all of a sudden ebola came out.. manmade. My Jehova is greater than them making these diseases

    2. I agree with you, Anonymous. These diseases that spring up from nowhere are probably man made. Scary though!

  22. Thank you Stella for updating the general public via this medium. Right from when I was in Uni, my lecturer used to sing Ebola virus-the deadliest virus whenever we were doing statistics. This was way back oh. Not until I watched a movie of this ebola did I understand how it goes about. Infact as I heard it in naija, I died and came back oh. Lol. But with constant enlightenment, we are beginning to understand it better and be on our guard whilst trying to live well.

  33. Emmmm mm something has been heavy on my mind o! RCCG convention is coming up 4th -10th if August, venue- Lagos. Lots of people will be trooping in from all parts of the country and even outside the country.

Seeing the red alert on a possible Ebola outbreak, can it be called off until a later time when it is ascertained we don't have the virus?

  36. Thank God for this info cos it relieved all the fears of this virus. To the extent that my house keeper refused to hold hands during prayers as instructed by the Reverend at Church when the next person to her tried to hold her hands. She told the person in Yoruba language "Aisan wan ita" meaning there are diseases outside. Lol

  39. Thank you Stella for this post.

Please inform the public that Ebola is REAL, people must accept and say the facts to Health Workers and Health Workers should also accept and treat the patients with or without Ebola virus instead of pushing them out.

Health Workers should be encouraged by the Liberian Government in order to encourage the patients.
