Doctors In Nigeria Begin Indefinite Strike Today + Their List Of Demands.

Medical doctors in Nigeria will begin an indefinite strike today after the Federal Government failed to heed a warning the doctors issued two weeks ago.

The president of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Kayode Obembe, said the doctors had written an open letter to Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Anyim Pius Anyim, listing a set of grievances and demands which are

- The post of Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (DCMAC) has been circularised and operational,” the doctors’ letter stated. Rather than abolish it, the NMA hereby demands that four DCMACs for teaching hospitals and three for the federal medical centres be appointed to assist the Chairmen, Medical Advisory Committee, whose statutory responsibilities are too heavy for any single individual to handle. Directors in other government agencies are supported by several Deputy Directors, Such a DCMAC must have same qualifications as the CMAC.”

-The NMA demanded that all health workers should be able to attain the height of their career (grade level 17) without the nomenclature of “Director” in the hospital setting, arguing that in this way, the Teaching Hospital Act will not be violated.

-The NMA demands that grade level 12 (CONMESS 2) in the health sector must be skipped for medical doctors. Consequently, no medical/dental practitioner should be on that grade level anymore,” the doctors insisted.

-Immediate appointment of a “surgeon-general of the federation” as promised by President Goodluck Jonathan.

- Minimum hazard allowance of N100, 000 per month for medical doctors, adding that the specialist allowance should be adjusted as contained in the 2009 collective bargaining agreement.

-All doctors on CONMESS 3 and above must be paid specialist allowance or its equivalent that is not less than 50% higher than what is paid to other health workers.

-The position of Chief Medical Director/Medical Director must continue to be occupied by a medical doctor, as contained in the Act establishing tertiary hospitals. The position remains sacrosanct and untouchable,” the NMA further demanded.

-The medical body also urged the institution of a health trust fund to facilitate the upgrade of all hospitals in Nigeria.

*wahala dey oooooo!...different wahala from different angles?
The health sector is Nigeria was already limping on one bad foot, with this strike,it will become totally handicapped and redundant, the rot will get even worse.GOD BLESS NIGERIA.

  7. Don't know why Nigerian doctors are not even paid one third of the salary of oil company workers while they are the ones saving lives. I dnt really blame not even d nurses the way clients are treated in the hospitals, d salary is peanut compared to the task. For once, Jonathan tackle this issue properly.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. So because the salary is peanut the patients should be treated like monkeys? How much is the peanut salary you just talked about? Is the salary of a resident doctor below 100k? How much do registrars earn? The task is tedious no doubt but people should not be treated badly in hospitals and lives should be valued more than money. Some of these doctors you see carrying placards and singing solidarity songs are also into private practice. Must people die before you can prove a point? That's the only issue I have with this.

    3. My dear....just keep off salary ish.....I work. 24hrs a day....at times 36hrs straight... My mum was on admission I couldn't take adequate care because I had to be there for other patients.... I couldn't donate blood for my mum I had to beg people because My blood type is rare I had to give a child wit my same blood type than my mum just because my mums blood type can be easily accessed.....and yet the lots like you are unappreciative.. Don't you say we treat people anyhow....we try our best and that is it..you mention 100k like it's a huge thing....there are times are pay for patients care from my salary...
The task is tedious but with your mindset I bet you can't survive....I get in contact with highly infectious patients daily....people that evenbas your relatives you abandon them....and yet you are screaming 100k.....I see as many as 25patients in a clinic session that runs from 8 to 1pm...and ingrates like you open your mouth to say patients are treated badly
...the abroad you compare Nigeria to ask how many patients a doctor is to see in a day for optimal care....we go out of our way for the love of man and some people like you still say trash....see your mouth like lives should be valued more than money...I'm not saying it's a wrong adage if at all it is....but you don't expect me to leave my kids at home in the hands of a nanny day in day out.....and I don't have enough money to even get a sleep in nanny to handle my.kids....
.....you better face your government and plead with them to make life conducive for doctors so dat instead of running abroad were the grass is actually greener..they will be willing to stay in the rural areas in order to render better health care...

And yes the salary is peanut

    5. its so sad to know that Nigerians are quick to insult doctors. I risk my life every single day attending to patients. I go to work 7days a week whenever I have bad patients in the wards. I'm on call every week and on weekend calls from fri to sun every fortnight and that excludes my weekly call. I have been pricked by needles too many times and on some of these occasions, the patients have been HIV positive. I am a doctor and I am proud to be one. I didn't spend 8years in school to come and count sand. if I took time to learn about the human mind and body, I don't see why I should not be adequately compensated. I know a lot of you will claim we took an oath but is oath is basically about swearing to practice medicine honestly. which is exactly what I do. i have paid for surgeries and tests for a number patients who I knew were probably going to die without them just like orela. yes, we doctors spend our salary on other people. some of u say we also work in private clinics. I agree and it's because we have to make ends meet. this strike is not about money. some other health workers are trying to undermine us in this country and we will not agree. is it too much to ask that a doctor remains a doctor, a pharmacist remains a pharmacist and a nurse remains a nurse? why would a pharmacist or nurse or lab technician want to become a consultant? you see, being a consultant in our profession, is the highest qualification you can attain as a doctor. to be a consultant, u have to go back to school for another 4,5 or 6 years depending on your course of study. why would any of these ppl dream of becoming a consultant in that context without passing through the rigours of the profession. if that is the case then a registrar should also be a consultant without any issues. these people want to be present at ward rounds! for what? they have absolutely no knowledge about medicine and surgery. it's an insult! and it makes me very angry. it's unfortunate that the masses are made to suffer but strike action is the only language that the govt understands. these ppl who call themselves johesu went on strike for a few days and the govt acceded to their demands. why should a non university graduate be a medical director? the term is medical director and not managing director. why can't we have a surgeon general? is there no attorney general? can a paralegal become a judge or can a bricklayer claim to be an engineer? emergency services are open at all hospitals anyway. it's only out patient departments that are not working. ppl,pls lets be reasonable for a bit. we are also human beings and shouldn't be treated like animals just because we decided to study medicine. enough is enough.

    13. Have you ever watched a woman having a baby without medical assistance in a hospital because of a strike action? Have you seen a baby slide out while everyone sits and watch like it's a movie? Has any of your loved ones died because of lack of medical attention during a strike? When that happens to you, then we can talk. You don't know my occupation, neither do you know how many hours I work. Everyone should be paid what's entitled to them but that shouldn't be at the expense of another's life. Let's not get so emotional that we lose sight of the things that are really important. Once a person is dead, you can only cry buy that won't bring them back. If I was frustrated or couldn't survive *giggles* as one of you implied, I probably would have gotten angry as some of you did and started raining insults. Its like a debate, you state your points in a mature fashion and let the arguments kick in and at the end of the day we shake on it and go our separate ways after all we don't know each other from anywhere. Insults won't make you win an argument, it can only make you feel relevant and good about yourself for a while... By the way there's a man who says he has hernia on this post. It would be nice if one of you could channel some energy over there. Domo arigato.

  11. Nigeria medical doctor's association should talk about how to organise re-training for it's members to 21st century medical practice. Stop pay as you go service they collect from patients before they start treatment because so many Nigerians has been lost from such practice. Innocent pregnant mothers/kids are lost daily due to carelessness from our doctors. (Yes it has happen to my family members friends and relatives) Priorities should be given to emergency patients not money first before treatment, treat patients before money. Your strike should be how to reduce death caused by carelessness from your doctors not seeking for more association post. 90% of deaths in Nigeria are preventable but our doctors are mostly careless in most cases. Meanwhile I had a doctor as brother he died of same careless treatment wrong diagnosis.
    You guys need modern training.

But we should be practical if these a done....how do the hospitals get money to restock materials used....I may not bother about my time...I understand the profession is sacrificial..but my dear we should remember it's even the poor that come to teaching hospitals and they come with simple cases as severe malaria that should be attended to at even PHCs that are not effectively functional in Nigeria so at the end of the day the tertiary hospitals are overwhelmed so even after triaging patients there is still alot of people who won't get adequate care....

The main problem i see here is the lack of a good working relationship among members of the interdisciplinary team. I don't even think you guys understand you are a team. Why is a doctor drawing blood when there is nurse and phlebotomist available??? that is a task you delegate. Respect is also very important, it's so much easier to help out someone you know respects you. for instance, if a doctor is been condescending towards a nurse and later on needs to delegate a task to that nurse, he/she can find a way to fake been busy to get out of doing it. mehn, so many inner problems i see here that goes beyond better pay...Abeg make una aslo petition for better diagnostic equipment. Do we even have a comprehensive stroke center in Nigeria?

  28. As sad as it can be...nigerian health sector is going to a state of crisis . It's disheartening that NMA is going on strike on some issues that only people in the medical system can understand..To the new breed of doctors quoting laws here...there's no where in the teaching hospital act that the medical director must be a medicaldoctor...The law says sny personnel that is medically qualified...Lets take cues from the developed countries and stop all this hospital fight...All other professions now graduate with PharmD and DPT...Nobody is downplaying one another...professionals are being exposed and everybody must be where they right fully belongFYI...I am a first contact professional. ..I do not recieve orders from the doctors, they knoe nothing about my job,and I bring my patient back to full function. When doctors give up and are hopeless on patients. ..I do a wonderful job...5gully

  30. Abeg, we doctors can't win in this country. We will never be appreciated. Those of us that can leave the country should please leave as soon as we can. As for the other medical professionals fighting for power, they are just typical Nigerians. They want the glory but not the work associated with it

  31. Nobody should insult me cos I didn't do that to anymore. Where I work phlebotomist DO NOT take samples from patients. Nurses do not take samples or even set IV lines. They tell us that it's not their job. Even if a patient is dehydrated, they will wait for the doctor. To the person who talked about a nurse delivering her baby, my dear it's her job. Doctors don't need to be there unless there is a complication. We have fantastic mid wives for that. Legend please tell me how many surgeries a nurse can perform. I don't know how it works anywhere else but at mine. We used to sleep on the floor if there was no patient during call duty before they just got us a miserable boarding house bunk bed. Imagine what that does to my morale. Leaving my comfort to attend to mostly ungrateful patients. Some patients are equally very rude too. A patient has told me before that ko ni da fun mi just because I was attending to him on a daily basis. He was old and ill, wanted to go home but his family wanted him treated. Nobody can understand what we go through until you wear our shoes. My child was molested by my maid whenever I was on call. It was a horrible situation and I'm still not over it. I don't have a choice but to do the work. Is it too much to ask for a better working environment? Emergency services are working. To the guy with the hernia, don't worry. It's not an emergency unless it's obstructed. If it no longer goes in and u r vomiting, go to the nearest Hosp. Emergencies are open

  32. Keke napep cannot claim to be a four wheel drive. Everybody should respect the limits of their profession. Why would I go to the hospital to see the consultant nurse? How many years training does he/she have? Has he/she gone through a minimum of six years medical school or through another six years of residency after being an intern for one year? Am not a medical doctor but a professional and on hearing the johesu resolution, I predicted the strike and support it. Just pray the masses don't fall I'll within the period....that's if it's possible.

  33. Johesu want to be chief medical directors too. What's medical about them? They should have started by agitating for the title to be changed from chief medical director to chief health director...am still not a doctor in support of the strike.

  34. this issue doesnt call for all these abuses you all are rendering.to b sincerelike one of the writer on this blog wrote, the medical profession is a joint team, its nt independent, the doctors needs nurses because they all always close t the patient, they need tha lab technicians that would snd the result of tests e.t.c.one of the problem i see her is ego 'some doctors'have this ego and pride that they are the head of teh medical team ,meanwhile they are not nobody is the head coz all health wrkers need eachother to function effectively,if that is the case ,ois it when a doctor is preping for an operation that he would go and dget a lab result?or set the infuson of a patient?no!they cant do all at a timr thats why there is delagation of duties.and you that is abusing nurses,to be sincere the nurses do more of the job coz they ae closer to the patient than the doctor so dont say nurses dont do their jobs
