Confused Mother Needs Advice...Any Doctors In The House?

Please treat as urgent..thank you.

''Hi Stella, please I need your help.I'm a mother of a wonderful two year who is very agile and friendly.Recently I noticed that my child is always having painful bouts of very dry cough coupled with fever and loss of appetite, this has made her to loss so much weight.

I've visited three different specialists and they told me its bronchial sores.they all treated her for it but the problem is that it keeps coming back every month. Some people are saying it may be asthma?please how do I know its asthma?the three doctors have said its not,but what if they are wrong?

Please if you have any doctor friend that may help me please she seems to be wasting away.''

    2. She may have bronchitis. Those r some of d symptoms. I used to have same symptoms when I was young but now am fine. I was miraculously healed.
      She'll outgrow it with time.

    3. Madame, these symptoms sounds like TB to me ...and pls do an HIV test for ur child. I am nt bein insensitive, just stating facts.
One other thing it sounds like is cystic fibrosis except that the cough is dry and CF is nt dt common in naija.
Anyways, make sure all inv r done before its too late. And pls has ur child been seen by a consultant in a teaching hospital???...nt private o...wld av offered to arrange dis for you bt its been 3 yrs since I left paeds dept in LUTH...
Just try and get a referral letter from ur doc...it myt take a while...bt before u conclude ders nothin wrong...see an experienced paediatrician.

There r couple of conditions that may present like this in children and dey wl go on der own wt time...bt dont conclude its d case until uv crossed all ur Ts.
      All the best

  2. Madam, first, never you say your child is wasting away. Wrong words from a mother to her child. Second If you dint trust the analysis here why not go to U.S? You'll feel more comfortable there. Also SA has very good paedoatrics hospital. Try those as well. But ultimately prayers is equally as important. You'll be surprised what a little fasting can do. God is ur strength.

  3. My dear, if three doctors are saying the same thing, then there diagnosis might be correct, often, most kids suffer from bronchitis often tend to outgrow it at a certain age.Maybe Dr Okechukwu can enlighten us more.Permit me digress,Stella mistakenly deleted part of my first comment on Monalisa's post,I just want to use this this opportunity to resend it and say thanks.

    Dear sdk/sdkers

I wish to thank my fellow brothers and sisters for your love, prayers and concern while I was at the hospital.
I’m recuperating, though not 100 percent strong yet. I read this wonderful blog whenever I could with no strength to pen down a comment. Though still exhausted, I will make do with my energy tank reserve as the present situation yearns for deliberation. It was brought to my notice that someone else is using my name in Laila’s blog with the same profile picture (red paprika) and this same person tries to write like me. I’m sick and tired of the whole drama, at first, I was commenting without a google account, here comes the impostor, I took a google account, he/she tries to do the same using blogger buzz! I wish to categorically state that even though I read Laila’s blog, I do not comment on any other blog except sdk’s blog.
I wish to announce that any “The unquenchable pepper ose oku” without a google account is not me and I shall not in any form whatsoever be held responsible for his/her comments.

  8. Hello mom,
The symptoms ypu have described are not sufficient enough to say sge has asthma
The main symptoms are cough, wheeze and chest tightness usually worse at night. Asthma rarely presents with fever except when there is superimposed infection. A close differential of asthma in childhood is bronchiolitis which may be what she has. Hope there is no one with a chronic cough around the child? Tuberculosis needs to be ruled out too. That said, stella's forum will only help u put it out but you'll get so many conflicting opinions that you might end up with a migraine.
Please go to any teaching hospital around you...it may be stressful but it will be worth it.
Wish you all the best ma'am. Dr. GAS

  25. When did this start?
I am not a doctor but I have had the same issue with my daughter sine May and it hasn't stopped.
It can be worrying and most times she throws up in the middle of the night.
she's been to Premier Speciaist and I was told its allergy caused by the weather and pollen in the air. she's on loratidine 5mls everynight.
she was given ventolin a while back and prednisolone and it stopped but she cant be on predesolone for long. so now its when the cough is persistent we administer Ventolin. I was told it will get better when the weather improves. She is 4yrs old

Note: she has never had this even when we travelled in December and the weather was bad.
Keep her warm, keep furs from your child, no teddy bear and all and keep her from generator smoke.
    All the baest.

    1. Poster read this comment please. My daughter had something quite close to what you have described and my GP referred us to the hospital for an xray also gave us prescription for inhaler (but we never used it) cos he said most kids with that symptom have what is called infant asthma and he mentioned it goes away with time but the inhaler will help.

Once the xray came back clear I simply started giving her honey, I also bought a humidifier as I noticed very dry air causes the cough which usually comes at night. I also makes sure she drinks a lot of water and there is also water available when she wakes at night.

It's stopped now but she wasn't losing weight though.

Please see another doc , on the side you can try the honey and please lots of water. It could be the weather and it could be more. Don't take chances. God will surely touch her.

      Delete
    2. If you can't buy humidifier for now, try and improvise with a bowl, ,bucket or cup of Hot water cover it with towel in the room She or He sleeps, on the floor corner of the room.
PLEASE OOOO do this when ur child is sleeping away from the child, this help to moist the room and prevent dry Air.

  26. I'm not a doctor but if you're in nigeria I'd suggest you visit a teaching hospital.
It started as a flu for me, the cough I had was dry and painless, then it progressed with chest pain, series of fevers, night sweats and drastic weight loss (I'm 24 and I used to weigh 55kg and then I dropped to 45kg)
I was treated for malaria and typhoid on several occasions, then treated for pneumonia in a specialist hospital. I was tested for TB at the specialist hospital but all the results came out negative (I was slowly fading away and thought I was going to die) until I was asked to do an x-ray and further asked to go to the teaching hospital after my x-ray came out.
The doctors there told me to go off all medication for a week and a half then come back for tests (it was he'll, cos the medications helped relieve the fevers and cough)
I went back and all the tests came out positive for PTB (pulmonary tuberculosis)
I'm on treatment now and I've gained back the weight I lost and doing great
Teaching hospitals are very good regardless of the fact that their procedures are too long and the wait is endless.

According to your explanation I think its not asthma because when you have asthma you don't have dry cough, you hardly even cough u just find it difficult to breath at night and you can't even sleep. Am not a doctor, I av asthma so I know what am saying.

  44. Sorry for your baby's ill-health. God is control.

If you have the resources, take her to Europe or India for proper diagnoses. Doctors in Nigeria are good, but sometime as a result of lack of equipment and other reasons, they misdiagnose. I pray for God's intervention.

  49. So madam poster, are u now going to try all these suggestions on your poor daughter? Rather than using your time to look for good hospitals in your area, I guess you will use it to experiment everybody's treatment!!! You didn't even put your location so people could recommend a good hospital to take ur daughter for a thorough physical exam In your area becos u are hellbent on getting the solution online from people who haven't seen the child. If she's wasting away as you say, its all your fault!!

  50. Take your child for ECG to check for any heart abnormality. The symptoms point to a hole in the heart that is why asthma and all other ailments have been ruled out. Children with hole in the hearts start getting tired easily and cough and eat less at the age of two. Go straight to a teaching hospital and find out. Hopefully it will not be a heart problem but if it is, this is the right age to treat it as children who are diagnosed earlier still have to wait till their second birthday to see if the hole closes on its own before treatment commences.

  51. You said: Recently I noticed that my child is always having painful bouts of very dry cough coupled with fever and loss of appetite, this has made her to loss so much weight

    My Opinion:
    Madam,
It is a bit tricky reaching a diagnosis based on these symptoms of painful non productive cough;Fever, weight loss and loss of appetite alone. I would be wary of taking seriously any labels that people are throwing about with reckless abandon.
One can hazard a few differentials (possibilities) from the above but it will not only be irresponsible but typify the ''no consequences', 'waka-pass',unsupervised and unregulated medicine we tend to practice in Nigeria to do so.
It is vital that you attend your nearest teaching Hospital with your child for a Pediatrician to properly assess your child and advise you.
Do not allow yourself(or your child) to be a victim of the Neighborhood Awka or Ijebu Ode trained folks.

P:S- I had never heard of a condition called Bronchial sores- It might be a new one discovered along the Ijebu Ode-Ore axis, thank you for educating me!!
Please be wise. Your child depends on you to make the right decision.
