Authorities in California are investigating whether to press charges against an elderly man who fatally shot a suspected female burglar who said she was pregnant before he opened fire.
Tom Greer, 80, shot Andrea Miller, 28, after he chased her and a male suspect from his home on Tuesday.
A post-mortem examination is being conducted to determine if Miller was pregnant at the time of her death.
Miller's suspected accomplice Gus Adams, 26, has been arrested.
He is being held on suspicion of burglary and felony murder for his alleged role in the burglary that ended in Miller's death.
"The lady didn't run as fast as the man, so I shot her in the back twice," Mr Greer told a local television station following the break-in.
"She says, 'Don't shoot me, I'm pregnant... I'm going to have a baby,' and I shot her anyway," he added.
Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell later told reporters Miller did not appear pregnant at the time of the shooting.
Both Miller and Mr Adams were linked to similar crimes in the past, Mr McDonnell added.
Mr Greer is also said to have told police both suspects hit him, "body slamming" him to the floor, before he grabbed a weapon and chased them outside, shooting Miller.
He had also been burglarised three times before and suspected Miller and Mr Adams of being involved.
Prosecutors will now determine whether Mr Greer is protected under California law, which allows homeowners to defend themselves if in imminent danger of serious injury or death.

He was first evaded, he panicked, he grabbed his gun, pursued, didn't want to take chances even after she pleaded because it could have been a bait to soft pedal him then later hurt him.
DeleteHe shot at her the second time to be sure. He's not a policeman that is trained to shoot strategically. Like I said.. his gun is licensed to be his defence. In this case justified. Otherwise the state that issued the gun should come and explain the actual terms and conditions guiding the use of gun in that state by its citizenry.
Until then he can not be convicted of any crime based on the territorial invasion of his privacy. I rise...court!!!

He should have spared her life but she came to his house to steal from an 80yr old man and slam him on the ground. She too was inhuman at some point. As a pregnant woman you don't break into old people's homes. What if they had wrestled him to the ground and killed him as well?. The old coot may have thought she was lying as she didn't look pregnant. The man too must have been traumatised as he had been robbed at home before. It's very sad that he killed her. But pregnant women should have no business robbing homes.

In the first place, this man is 80 years old and he could have either be killed during the course of them trying to rob him or hAvd an heart attack due to shock.
