Scoliosis And Blog Visitor Adenike's Ojo's Surgery And Road To Recovery....A Must Read.

Having overcome the emotional and psychological issues associated with living with idiopathic scoliosis for 15years, it became imminent to do something about the physical deformity that was beginning to shut down my lungs; it was time for a scoliosis surgery.

Earlier this year, I started to see the surgeons at a prominent Spine and Neuroscience center and my first appointment with the surgeon left me with the much-dreaded words “at 27years of age, you have a 50/50 chance for a successful scoliosis surgery”. Nevertheless, we continued with the procedure and after getting the all clear for a surgery from my primary physician, a date was scheduled for my spine surgery.

The surgery lasted 10hours and about another 5hours it took for me to come back to consciousness. According to my husband who was with me in Intensive Care, my breathing literally stopped, and I had to be resuscitated and connected to different machines to monitor my vital signs.  Also, due to the Narcotics they were injecting me with to help with pain management, I became severely constipated and that created another problem. Despite all of these and many more, God took control through the great surgeons and specialists that attended to me.

With the help of physical therapy, occupational therapy and an amazing husband, I am learning to sit, stand, walk and do the basics of daily living all over again. My drastically reduced and more important, my lungs are safe & free.

I do not take all this for granted because people have passed on from anesthetics, become paralyzed from a spinal surgery or even brain dead. The MRI revealed that my surgery went better than anticipated and I am back on my feet getting stronger by the day. To the glory of God, I recently completed a 2mile walk!

ADENIKE SAYS
''As a clinical therapist and coupled with my personal journey, I started a non-profit earlier this year, The Curve Impact.

First, Spine-health, 2014 defined scoliosis as a condition involving an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. It can be caused by congenital, developmental or degenerative problems. Scoliosis usually develops in the thoracic spine or the thoracolumbar area of the spine and the curvature of the back may develop as a single curve shaped like the letter C or as two curves shaped like the letter S. Scoliosis indicators include unevenness in the shoulder height, shoulder blades, rib cages and the hips.

The Curve Impact is a scoliosis initiative that equips young females with the much-needed support to deal with the psychosocial concerns of living with scoliosis.
The Curve Impact’s purpose is to meet members’ need for support, education and socialization with regards to the following:

 ·    Normalization of the problem (living with scoliosis)
  .
.     Medical referral and education about treatment options.
·    Help members to overcome stigmatization, isolation and despair.
·      To provide emotional support to members.

·      To help young females rise above scoliosis by gaining confidence in themselves.
·      To provide a platform for shared experiences whereby young females can openly discuss the psychosocial challenges they encounter living with scoliosis.
·      To create a social network by providing opportunity for socialization and validation.
·      Image trainings (wearing the right clothes, shoes, standing/sitting posture etc.).

  41. The same mouth they use to praise God is the same mouth they all come here with to insult, talk rubbish and belittle others... God cannot be mocked, you cannot speak Christianese only when it's convenient and then with the same mouth put down others.... U will all give account of the words you speak on the last day and whether u believe it or not your mouth can make u go to hell.... Let's stop being hypocritical and learn to only edify with our mouths instead of cursing and talking rubbish....

Poster thank God for your life, The Lord who has kept you for his own purpose will continue to make u a sign and a wonder to your generation in Jesus name

  51. it is a very painful surgery and healing, I pray your receovery is smooth sailing. My daughter also had the spinal fusion surgery last year and was back in the hospital for nearly a month due to infection. So be sure to pay attention to all symptoms post-surgery and call your doctor if anything changes...swelling, more pain than usual etc.

  53. Thank God For your surgery and recovery. I'm also a scoliosis patient. I'm a guy in my mid 20's and I noticed it since 2007. Mine is a c-curve to the right on my upper back but not life threatening.I've been considering going for a surgery but I decided to opt for chiropractic care (adjusting the spine by hands and natural means) lastweek.

I hope it works and I never get to undergo a surgery. If anyone has used chiropractic care successfully, please comment and let us know how it went.

    Thanks
