Househelp Alert - Scary Blog Visitor Narrative.

This is serious!...

''Hi Stella greetings to you and your wonderful SDK family.  I have an important but scary experience which I will like to share not becos its funny but becos as mothers we have to be at alert.

I have been trying to get a house help for sometime now becos I have to kids and so I needed  extra hands. So I contacted friends to help me get one but a friend linked me to an agent who finally got one for me.

I decided to take her for series of medical test including HIV and pregnancy. And she was not only pregnant but HIV positive. Though she looks nice and hard working I had to send her home.

I told her she was pregnant but didnt tell her about her HIV status. Please nobody should criticize me for victimising her. I am just been human cos I have 2 innocent kids and wont want to take chances.

My point is we should be careful. Always take any body you intend keeping at home for medicals even when we decide to keep them we should be aware of their medical status. Thanks.''

*You should have told her or told whoever brought her to you to tell her,she needs to know so that she doesnt spread it on....you know some house helps sleep with the men in the house of where ever they are employed.
Please she needs to know so that she can get help!

    2. A house-help I brought in Feb also tested positive to HIV,i counselled her b4 d test and she revealed to me dat she was sleeping wit her former madam's hubby for over a year b4 she decided to leave their place in Dec. I wanted 2 trace d man but juxx changed my mind,u knw all dese port Harcourt girls can hop around like crazy.she even told me she slept wit a factory manager where she worked for one month.in january. And she has NEVER had SEX wit CONDOM.she has never seen it sef. Its so shocking knowing dat dis girl has slept wit over 10 men!!!! I told her d result of d test and directed her to a teaching hosp where she wil start retro viral drugs. shes juxx 21yrs,very innocent looking.Men r totally useless.Dats how dat stupid man wil infect her faithful wife and put d whole family in jeopardy. Seriously we mothers shd be very careful o! Not only HIV,but hepatitis is more deadly.i screen for hepatitis, HIV and pregnancy test. May God help us all.

    3. Chizzy I test for everything o. I've had 2 pregnant and 2 with hepatitis and 1 abortion. I test for TB, typhoid, malaria, syphilis, pregnancy, hepatitis and HIV. I can't be telling shoulda woulda coulda stories at my age. All those tests cost N2,300 at any Lagos State public health clinic. Please do them and repeat every 3 months. These girls and boys go out, they're sexually active and they play with your kids. They share their plates when you're not looking. In my house, we eat the same food, use the same cutlery. Even typhoid is contagious given the right conditions. Google Typhoid Mary. And always deworm them. Combantrin is cheap enough.

      Delete
    4. Tnks dats a good one. Why I dnt bother abt syphilis and gonorrhoea is cos dey cnt be contacted directly like sharing cutlery unless there's sexual inter course wit d person and typhoid is treatable shaaa. HIV and HEPATITIS r two main disease dat
doesn't hv cure and highly contagious.

    5. Em madam, with ur concern over every know ailment, (which u erroneously think only house helps can have), why dont you take care Of them urself and home school them?

I know it sounds crazy but not only househelps have these ailment u listed. What about ur cousins, their cousins, their uncles and aunts?

If given a choice between HIV, CANCER OF THE COLON AND DIABETES, which would u choose?

We need to remember that malaria kill more people than Hiv, road accident, cancer, diabetes and boko haram combined.

    8. R u sure ur a doctor??? Cos u talk rubbish most times. Is diabetes, cancer or malaria contagious??? I screen my helps for HIV and HEPATITIS cos dey r contagious and there's no CURE. How can u screen ur uncle or cousin wen dey juxx come and go but ur helps stay wit u 4 months or even years so Plsssssss get off my post.
      Chizzy.

    9. Dr, I test and treat the treatable ones. I will not send my child to a school that doesn't run tests. In fact, I'm not sure I get your point. Do you have a point? Because these people loive in my house! Eat and drink with the same utensils! Prep food for cooking! Feed my child when I'm not home! Cut themselves when using knives! I can't totally insulate mine but I will minimize the danger to them! FYI, my driver and anyone else working for me are tested including my staff at work. It is as much for them as it is for me. Is it the pregnant one that tried unsuccessfully multiple times to abort her pregnancy in my parents' house? She even drank bleach! Used a hanger! Thank God for his mercy. Or the one that knew she was pregnant and tried to game the test because she wanted to make enough money to go abort. Or the one that had an abortion 2 days before she was brought to my house without any antibiotics or pain meds still bleeding! Dr. High Horse, abeg, I like you. No vex me.

    12. That "doctor" okechuukwu isn't a real MBBS holder. He's ignorant plus has a low IQ.

      Delete
    13. Anony, thank God that part of the requirements for becoming a medical doctor isn't a high IQ. U seem obsessed with this IQ talk today...did u just learn of intelligence quotient?

I have met several patients in the course of my practice who tell me how they took every kind of precautions and yet got infected thru non sexual means.

I applaud those running tests on their prospective employees and it is the right thing to do. I was reponding to the comment about typhoid and the rest.

What I advise families with little children to do is run a comprehensive test atleast twice a year on all ur family members. That way you can detect anything early.

We are constantly exposed to different dangerous situations daily.

Heck my own son contracted some horrible rash from his school. I had to get parental consent from all his classmates to run tests and administer treatment free to 23 of them.

So Chizzy, like u said, the cousins just come and go. But infection takes a moment.

    14. Nah! This Dr oke is so clueless!! Can't stop wondering y u guyz "run Around" him. Wow! U just gave urself away dude. Now am well convinced u either an optician or a dentist? Fake doc.

      Delete
    15. But Dr. you must know that there is such a thing as a typhoid carrier. If such a person has horrible hygiene and doesn't wash up after bathroom runs and then touches food, that's it. Because I still don't get your non-existent point. My current house help had typhoid and malaria when brought to me. I took him to the doctor, and bought the necessary meds. He's now fine. Are you suggesting I shouldn't have tested him? My mum was a public health nurse for well over 20 years and I learned from her. In fact, Lagos State Public Health Centres in Lagos East have a domestic worker's test which includes all of the above AND they recommend a thorough check up as well so you know if the worker has any serious illnesses like asthma or diabetes so you're prepared.

  5. This is quite common actually, and I think it hjas become the norm for people to send intending helps for medicals.
It's not even enough to do it as a one off, cos even if they're given a clean bill of health initially, you don't know what might happen a few months down the line.
So it needs to be repeated at appropriate intervals, maka ndi uta!!!

  6. Poster, you took the right decision! She might be aware of her status! I think you did the right thing by not letting her know you knew her status!why will somebody try to criticize your action? Anyone who tries to criticize must be HIV positive as well!

    1. Pepper, why u talk like this?? Mba nu!!!
As someone who deals with things like this everyday, I am forced to add a voice to this.
Madam, ur decision not to employ her is a personal choice but ur decision not to inform her thru the appropriate channel should be condemned. It is a public health issue.
U should have taken her to the clinic (which has already displayed unprofessional conduct by handing u the result without requesting to see the patient) for counseling before revealing the result.
The girl can have an HIV free baby and can live a normal life if she knows on time and starts her treatment.

I want to appeal to anyone who comes across anyone that has the virus to show compassion and remember, e no dey show for face. The househelp whose result is negative today may become positive in 4 months time without having sex.

    2. Whats the big deal Anony 11.04. Changing maids has nothing to do witj being lazy. So if they tested positive, she should keep them? Once I dont feel comfortable with them, I send them back. I have had 2 in 3 weeks.

      Delete
    3. Please shut up! She didn't say she got the 3 at the same time, did she? And even if? Some ppl have very big houses and a lot of kids and very very busy schedules/ jobs, therefore the need for more helps.

    4. Why r u quick in judging? If you are married, you would have realised the 3 maids were not employed at once but one after d other after discovering their status.

      Delete
    5. See them lazy asses is normal with most of u to have 5maids. Only lazy women keep more than one house maid. If u are paying their health insurance and taxes u wont boast of even one maid. Cheap employment andpoverty is only reason such happens. Most of our women are lazy after child birth so all anonymous u guys should shut up.

  16. Blog visitor, I am amazed at your nonchalance about something as serious as HIV! Who cares that you sent her packing? Before nko? How could you not tell her and whatever guardian brought her? So she should continue spreading the virus and not take precautions concerning the baby she's carrying?

  19. A lot of them know they are HIV+ and happily have unsafe sex. It is the men of the house who go around sleeping with house girls, without protection, who need counseling. Bottom line is, it is we wives who suffer. A man will go and bring disease to you. A married woman can't negotiate sex. I had a nanny who had HIV. But she wasn't surprised or distraught when I told her. Which means she knew her status. This story should not be about HIV+ house girls. But about wives infected with HIV and other STIs by their dear husbands.

Househelp issue has too many wahala. Just yesterday my friends cousin discovered her Househelp loaded a big thrash bag with her kids clothes, rice, beans, garri and so many of her valuables. Stupid La, I have friends and families, if they had told me about a lab or Hosp then I wouldn't have asked you guys here in the first place but sha I understand your daftness. Bianca, your reply made me laugh!

I know places I can have the tests done but I want a place where I can do it "all" at a go.

I live in Maryland so anywhere in Lagos is good.

Please, I only want suggestions from serious minded people, I don't have time for all these small small girls that like running their mouth on SDK!

    10. Small pikin calling us small girls here. Go to yaba left and do the test. Stupid question I repeat.

    11. Old mama La, I agree I'm a small girl.
I sud go to yaba left? Like seriously? Only bcos I asked a question? My advice to you, be careful of how you talk to people cos you don't know the prayer I rendered this morning before leaving my house. I won't curse you, I'm a Christian and I have class.

    2. Its good to know your status. Atleast every 6 months if you are sexually active.
You can call your GP and request for a comprehensive blood test. Also you can go for counselling before and after the test. Goodluck

  49. Dear poster, am amazed at your level of ignorance anyone can be a victim of HIV no matter HO̶̲̥̅̶̷̩̥̊͡ careful you think you are. Its not a killer disease anymore and cant be so easily transmitted. You need to locate this girl and take her to a counselling centre, there is hope for a normal life for her. Good luck

  50. Dear Poster,

you did the right thing sending her away. I wouldn't term it discrimination rather I'd call it "playing safe."

    However,

you did wrong not informing her of her HIV status. you ought to have sat her down, talk to her calmly about her status (hiv & preg) ask her questions how it happened, advice her, pray with her, probably give her some money and send her away...all in good note.

You never know where she is coming from or what her story is.

  51. Linda, even the nanny isn't safe. God help us. Am so scared of HH and Nannies.

  52. Its common and nothing new. Hepatitis B is even worse than HIV especially when you have children.

    ReplyDelete
  53. U only have control over the house help, what of your children's day care/ nursery teachers? Do u know their status as well? We can only show love to people infected or affected by the virus. Poster is not late to pass the information to the person concerned so she can get appropriate care. In these days that men can sleep with anyone, bcos those people that slept with her were other ladies husbands. Do u know ur own family status? HIV, hepatitis B and C are public health concerns and should not be discarded just like that.

    1. Wow,you are so right.. What about the daycares and crèches.. We can't demand for their own health details. Poster you should have told her what her result said.and also inform the agency..

    2. Thank God for people like u. Whenever issues of public health is discussed on this blog, it is treated with limited intelligence.

It remains the choice of the employer who to employ but disparaging an HIV carrier is not only ignorant but disheartening. I currently have in counseling a family of 4 who contracted the virus thru their now 3 year old child. The baby was infected during one of the early child care visits. Due to the low immune system of babies, it became manifest after 6 weeks when the baby was bleeding thru different orifices. The mother became infected while tending to her baby and the 4 year old also. The husband was the last to catch it.

      Imagine the devastation.

Lets stop discrimination and understand the disease. High blood pressure kills more than HIV and guess what, they both require diligent use of medicine to control them.

    3. But Dr. you just reiterated our argument. Tests should be conducted on food service workers, health care workers and child care providers. Period. Non-negotiable. This ensures that the proper steps are taken to avoid transmission to the unsuspecting public. There are steps Dr. Enlighten us so we do the right thing. Testing is not castigation.

I know of a househelp that knew she was positive. She would cut herself and cut her bosses' children or prick herself and then prick them. She knew and she wanted to pass it on. To children! She was successful and that was how the mother found out.

If you want to end discrimination, enlighten the public but don't infer that testing is wrong.

      Delete
    4. Anony, I did not say testing is wrong. I am only speaking to the attitude towards those living with HIV. Always get tested. Always.

    5. I wonder why u people crucified Dr O. On his earlier post...this commenter is saying the same thing.....

  54. Poster you are a wicked witch..... Hate people like you who care only about themselves.... So u think the househelp is not human abi? Just an object to look after your kids..... Yet you all expect them to take care of your kids but you don't care about them..... Why did you not tell her of her HIV status? For your information u have not said anything a lot of women don't know....... U are wicked and it's sad that people are still this self centered..... Do u not know u are saving her life by telling her? Now she will just go on without taking drugs and taking care of herself....God will judge you for that wickedness...... Treat others as you would want to be treated...

    ReplyDelete
  55. Poster yes you deserve criticism.... Don't you have an iota of human kindness in you? Why will u find out she is pregnant plus positive and assume she knows already or whatever your reasons are? Househelps are humans and if we expect them to also treat our households kindly then we do the same...if they turn out bad that's a diff story..... Yes we heAr bad stories but it's for us to be extra vigilant but for u not to have told that girl was wicked of you.....evil thrives when people keep repeating the same cycle.... If she didn't know you are putting the unborn child and mother in further danger

  56. Madam you did the right thing by sending her away. The only thing you did wrong is not telling her she is HIV positive and i believe it is not too late. Please let her know ASAP!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Nobody should criticize you for victimising her?...Ok here goes... Weldone! Great Job! Kudos! Congrats! .....happy?? You need 100 hours of therapy cuz there are so many things wrong with this picture you just painted...

  58. Put her on treatment now what kind of wicked person are you? She insure looks clean? What if your husband jams her on the road and sleeps with her raw? Please go and look for her and put her on treatment so that her HIV won't be spreadable. Please be a good person. You might be saving your own relation or friend. You should tell her that she will be alright as long as she takes her medicine.

  59. No help sleeps one night in my house without full medical test oo. I cannot shout!

Even when the test comes back negative, they still can't share my plates, cups and cutlery unless they do it behind me which I doubt. We eat the same good but everyone has their own plates, cups n cutlery.

@ the person that said they share cutlery, berra be careful oo. you don't know what they do when they take their off or even with your gateman when your not home.

  60. It is WRONG, VERY WRONG to conduct Hiv test on someone workout their consent!!!.

    ReplyDelete
  61. an employer has the right to run tests on his or her employee. even when you look for a white collar job, these tests are required.

but its important u call the girl and inform her of the status, dont involve a 3rd person or her agency repect her privacy. if not for anything at least for the baby she is carrying so she can get help and not infect the unborn child.

whether you did right by sendig her away is your own cup of tea

    ReplyDelete
  62. please inform the agency where you got her from. she needs to know about her status so that she can get help other wise she will keep spreading it without knowing she has it.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Ignorance is such a big crime. Do you honestly think HIV infects only house helps, gatemen and conductors? My dear you will be amazed how it spreads amongst the middle class and upper class, university students and even primary school children. I have seen an innocent 2 month old baby born with the virus at the orphanage. No one is condemning you for trying to protect your family but I just can't get the wickedness of you not informing her about her status knowing she is carrying a life in her. Haba! The sooner we are more enlightened and stop discrimination against victims of the virus the healthier and safer our society will be. Babies are been born with this virus now for Christ's sake! Madam if not for your own sake then do it for your children- let the lady know her status. May our children not reap fruits of our wicked and selfish deeds.

  65. True dat! Medical test is a "must do". However, there are free drugs in lagos state (general hospitals) which the maid can use to prevent her child from contacting the virus. The earlier the better. Pls do not withold such infromation from her . Cheers!

  66. Enlightenment! Enlightenment! Enlightenment.

HIV is not a death sentence! I repeat, HIV is NOT a death sentence.

I totally understand the stigma associated with the disease and so on. But a lot of people will die of Cancer, High BP, Heart diseases before an HIV patient.

I totally agree with denying her employment based on health status, but do you know the health status of your tomatoes seller? Your water seller? Your gala maker? Your garri maker? Your driver? Your gateman?

"Remember that we are all human first, circumstances determine our fates or levels of humanity".

Inform her about her circumstances, there are drugs that can save that baby from HIV.

♥Shout out to my mom for hiring a teenage help and her pregnancy, which later became her baby. And then then educating her♥

  67. I live in SA and it is not right to have a test on any maid whatsoever. U would be sued if you took the maid for an HIV test, even asking her to have an HIV means that you are infringing on her rights to have employment. It is by God's grace that we get househelps although i decided not to get one cause of those issues. moreover u never know who has HIV as family members as well can be infected and u never know. Daycare is another issue as u never know who is infected.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Nothing unusual here but a few critical things to note:-

First the poster should ensure that the pregnant lady is informed. That way any mother to child HIV transmission can be prevented during delivery

Second any caregiver we intend to bring into our homes – related or not – should undergo not jut HIV and Pregnancy but also Hepatitis (B & C) and Tuberculosis. It is also helpful to undergo all these tests as well

  69. My dear i have had househelps with everything uve mentioned. I linked the hiv + girl to an aids foundation, gave her a good amount of money and explained it all to her. Of course she had to leave but we kept i. Touch and shes thriving today. U should have told her and assisted her. Im not judging u anyway but i think we should all learn to help everyone we come in contact with that we can.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Wow, when we think we are taking 1 step forward we then take 20 steps backm

What hospital conducted HIV test without adequate counseling??????

Why was there no post counseling especially as the client was pregnant?

We are spending so much to prevent mother to chilld transmission and idiots and quacks jeopardise our efforts.

I hope the poster herself does regular tests as HIV is not exclusive to househelps.

  71. hmmmmmm. I conduct HIV and HEPATITIS test. Once a very fine girl had hepatisis, my twins were bearly 3months old and i told her to go take care of herself i even gave her the test result. After that the next was hiv 1 and 2 positive. I couldn't tell her to her face, but, i actually called her so called aunt to let her know. but her response made it obvious that they knew and only wanted her to go and work. Imagine, someone called you to inform you that your sister is hiv positive and your answer is realllyyyyy and she cut the phone. when i called her back she never picked the call again. God help us all.

    ReplyDelete
  72. These days, if you require someone to be tested for HIV, the hospital has to get the consent of the person and the test result has to be communicated to the person as well- whether positive or negative. The only problem is if the house girl has the capacity to understand the magnitude of the situation and how she will take it. She may even decide to start transmitting it sef.

Stop blaming the poster for not telling the girl. Give her a break abeg! I'm sure she can still inform the agent to inform her but that should be her prerogative given the situation

  73. I just did HIV test and I am free oohhh.
Chai! abuse me all u want, but in d past year I have tried dating three guys and did all without condom oh, at some point. things didn't work out, so I am back to single status. and honestly, if I found out I had I would have taken in my stride cos I have been a bit careless, I must admit. Well, My heart can stop pounding now. Last one was in February. Will do a test again by end of the year. God forgive me oohh
