BBC reports that a California teenager declared brain dead after a routine operation went wrong will receive an honorary diploma from her school.
The uncle of Jahi McMath 13, told local media the school had decided to give her a diploma later this month.
It will be accepted by a relative at the school's graduation ceremony.
Jahi went into cardiac arrest after tonsil surgery last December, and the hospital in Oakland said they would no longer provide treatment.
Her family went to court to stop the hospital from taking her off life-support after she was declared brain-dead.UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland has argued in court papers that there is no medical treatment they can give to the teenager because she is "practically and legally" dead.
An independent paediatric neurologist from Stanford University supported that view.
In January, she was transferred to an undisclosed facility.
Before the school announced the move, her family had to call the Reems Academy of Technology and Arts, which Jahi had attended since starting school.
"Jahi should be graduating from the eighth grade this month but it may not be possible for her to make it to the ceremony, as she is fighting to recover.
"She deserves to receive the graduation certificate as she has completed most of the eighth grade work."
*A miracle is still possible if one has faith....just one touch from Jesus makes it alright.
All those medical personnel switching off life support machines,i hope they know that it is not over until God says so....?

Can u imagine? How dare he? Who gave him the right to decide to relieve their sufferings. Hope they sentence him for life. Chidinma
ReplyDeleteThis is a pass story, since four months or more than.
ReplyDeleteGod is able to do exceedingly and abundantly above all we can ask or think according to the power that works in us!
ReplyDeleteJust one touch from Jesus...poor girl.
ReplyDeleteStella brain dead is brain dead. Before anyone comes to that conclusion, there would have been at least 2 independent consultants and an anaesthetist. God is God and science is science.
ReplyDeleteDr lagbaja.
Science is knowledge God has given man to enable us utilise the resources He has blessed us with. When man began to separate science from God was where bombs and man made viruses began.

Deletein all honesty, Stella I think this is a hard one. Normally, death or legal death is when there is no function of respiration and heartbeat. Brain death is actually irreversible, the heart keeps beating cos of the machine, but the brain is dead and the brain controls everthing. The question should be, does the soul depart the body at 'braindeath' which we don't know. Some comatose patients have their spirits departing their body, and later coming back when they wake up. But then, comatose patients are alive..repiration, pulse rate, everything working..just that they cannot respond to any stimulus at all, even severe pain, noise or light. It's a deep unconscious sleep. But in brain death..the body might never be able to perform any activities on its own...machines are used to keep the heart beating but the person might be dead. St Paul said to be absent from d body is to be present with the Lord...but when are we absent from the body??
ReplyDelete"Medical life support procedures being utilized to keep blood flowing to organs donated to transplant services does not change the fact that once brain activity has ceased death has been medically certified. Given the scenario presented above it is reasonable to conclude that the soul has gone on to be with the Lord. While it appears that employing life support technology that keeps a person alive is the compassionate thing to do, consider that the opposite might be the better option. Christians can conclude that utilizing technology that prevents the human body from taking a natural course that might include death is actually the wrong thing to do. The Bible gives no instructions that Christians are to do everything possible to extend life. Instead Christians are to accept that life contains adversity (Job 2:10). Christians should certainly insist that people be made as comfortable as medically possible while simultaneously not attempting through technology the prevention of the natural course of life. Trying to prolong life artificially or end life prematurely are both tantamount to usurping the authority of God."
ReplyDeleteSo we dont really know for sure if we are helping the person or not. Though thumbs up to science that we have these machines at all, and the bible was written long before these machines were invented.
Well said
DeleteHmmm. Nice analogy.

ReplyDelete@chikito can't read your comment is too long. @swerve the news is true, she died as a result of human error in treatment of her brain. She's just the only child of a single mother. But this is a pass story since four months+. The CNN repeated the news for over two weeks.
ReplyDelete@mamie u bloody twat even if she looks 100 is that the issue at hand ?? Old hag !!!
ReplyDeleteThe family should just let her go. Once respirator/life support is unplugged, she can't breathe on her own. At this point, the family should consider quality of life Vs quantity of life. I know it's hard, but it's one tough decision that needs to be made. They should donate her organs (that'll go a long way, and someone will thank the mother for it).
ReplyDeleteI pray that she's fully recovered soon.
