Woman Dies After CS Prescribed By Docs To Remove 'Dead Baby' Goes Wrong

This is a sad sad story!...RIP Folasade.

On March 16, 2014 a newly wedded Folasade Ogunbiyi died shortly after a controversial childbirth at the Orile Agege General Hospital (OAGH), Lagos State.

It all began on March 14, when the late 26-year-old Folasade , according to her elder sister, Esther Babalola, complained of abdominal pain and was rushed to the hospital for proper treatment. Upon medical examination, doctors allegedly said that she was carrying a dead baby in her womb and that there was need for a Caesarian Section to remove the baby.

She was, however, said to have been abandoned by doctors for over 24 hours before she was attended to.

"Her husband had travelled out of town on March 14 when she complained of abdominal pain. I noticed that she was probably due for delivery and we decided to take her to a private hospital in the neighbourhood. But doctors at the hospital said she would need to undergo Caesarian operation to be delivered of the baby.

"It was at this juncture that we decided to rush her to Orile Agege General Hospital, where she registered for ante-natal. Doctors at the hospital, however, told us that she was carrying a dead baby in her womb, adding that there was need for Caesarian Section to remove the dead baby."

Painting the circumstances leading to the death of Folasade and her son, Babalola said: "On March 15, we were asked to get some drugs and while I had gone to fetch the drugs, she was safely delivered of a baby boy through Caesarian Section. The doctors did not even know that the baby was alive until one of the nurses noticed that he was breathing at a corner where he was abandoned for hours. The baby developed complications a few hours later and was taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja where doctors confirmed him dead as a result of long exposure to cold.

"The baby was not attended to on time and I was told by a health worker who spoke in confidence that she was the one that notified the doctors that the baby was alive. The doctors had dumped the baby and did not attend to him until they were told that he was alive. The baby was not covered with clothes to keep him warm which resulted in a lot of complications.

“They asked us to pay for several tests run on the baby when his health deteriorated. We were later referred to LASUTH where doctors told us that his case was badly managed at Orile Agege General Hospital following undue exposure to cold and that the exposure had led to his death shortly before we arrived at the hospital.”

Speaking further on events leading to the death of her only sibling, Babalola said: “My sister’s lips suddenly swelled up and turned yellowish and we called the attention of the doctors on duty to the development. The swollen lips later subsided after she was treated, but she died shortly after on March 16. A doctor at LASUTH, who did not want her name mentioned, told me that my sister must have reacted to a particular drug called ROCEPHINE that was administered on her. She said the drug was mostly used on patients who suffer from cancer, or people suffering from excessive pains.

"The doctor asked me if she complained of excruciating pain and I said no. She also said that even if she was going through pains, the drug should have been given to her in small doses. And I concurred because that same drug was among the list of drugs prescribed and administered on her at the hospital.

"We were asked to defray all the bills incurred before they could release her body to us for burial and we complied. We were shocked when the hospital insisted on carrying out a postmortem on her body which the family had earlier opposed. Although, we have since buried her but all we want on this matter is justice.

"Folasade was the only sister I had. She had a traditional marriage ceremony on December 26, 2013. She was a very hardworking person. Her death is a big loss to our family and that is why I have been mandated to express the position of the family on the complicity of doctors at the hospital which eventually led to the loss of Folasade."

When our correspondent visited the hospital, the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr. (Mrs) Iyabo Tijani, declined comments on the grounds that she was not competent to speak on the matter. "I cannot say anything on the matter because I am not officially competent to speak on this incident. The Ministry of Health is the only place you can get comments on this issue, please go there."

Fruitless efforts were also made by our correspondent to seek the comment of the spokesman of the Lagos State Ministry of Health, Mr. Tunbosun, as he did not pick his calls or reply a text message sent to his phone line.

    1. Unfortunately, cases like this are quite common in Nigeria.

I'm a bit confused about the rocephine issue though, they need to get their facts right if they hope to sue anyone for this.
RIP to the lady, hope the family gets the justice they seek.

Anty Stella, I tried writing on the rant message but it hasn't been going through.

My advice is that ranting is not the way. In all things give thanks.

When I was a corper I served in NEMA in the abulance unit. I have 2 training certificate on emergency response. Na so I finish them promise sey them go retain me. Them no retain me. At first I was disappointed. Yes I was in the MICU that's ambulance unit.

2day I have a testimony, if I was retained I would have been among the people that have been picking dead body scarted parts at the scene. My heart can't take that pain. I pity my former colleagues who work there.

So anty stella, ranting is not my nature. By this happening in nigeria the world would know there is a mighty God of nigeria. I aways pray 4 nigeria because the bible says the heart of kings are in his hands he turn it the way he wills. He also says prays 4 jerusalem so that u might prosper. So pray 4 our leader and nigeria.

I wouldn't have ranted 4 the fact that I am still single but right now I am enjoying my singlehood. Its interesting and a wonderful experience.

Lesson 2 b learned: in all things give thanks.

  25. This story get as e be o. First of all, CS is hardly performed when the baby is suspected to be dead, they'd rather induce the woman and let her give birth naturally to the dead baby. Why scar a woman to bring out a baby that's dead anyways.
Number two, when the baby was born, didn't he cry since he was alive, if he was presumed dead, why didn't they wrap him up to be taken to the morgue. Hospitals don't leave dead babies lying around.
Number 3, rocephin is a very common place antibiotic. One of the most commonly used antibiotics, I'm very sure that was not what caused the mother's death and I'm also sure, the relative wasn't talking to the medical personnel

There's more to this story than we're being told.

    ReplyDelete
  26. This is so heartbreaking, may her soul rest in peace.

    Aeegurl...

    ReplyDelete
  27. There are some things about this story that doesn't fit at all.First of all I'm wondering why a CS was done to remove a dead baby; cos I know obstetricians would rather deliver a dead baby vaginally; so maybe they knew the baby wasn't dead afterall. Then secondly it shouldn't have taken the doctors so long to discover the baby was alive cos; a dead baby can no longer be pink and this baby wud have been pink to an extent. Thirdly the woman probably had an anaphylactic reaction to the rocephin given and it wasn't wrongly prescribed as its an antibiotic that she definitely needed if she was actually carrying a dead baby and also went thru CS. Its absolutely not an analgesic nor an anti-cancer drug.
If the relatives really want justice they should get the true story and channel their grieviances to the appropraite quarters. Telling a false story isn't going to get them anywhere.
    Anyways RIP Folasade.

  36. Rocephin a pain medication? Faints. I don die sef, go to heaven and come back. That is an antibiotic to treat drug resistant bacteria. That is why the doctor no gree mention her name. Until doctors are held accountable by a medical board, they'll keep toying with people's life.
Have they ever heard of Apgar score? So no one ever thought of doing that on the newborn baby? What a shame. Some people are not fit to be called doctors, a disgrace to the profession. May God console the family.

  41. As I have always noted in blogs posts, there are three kinds of people’s comments - the wise, the sentimental, the foolish.
The issues here are that of incompetence and yet some people decide to bring God into the mix….imagine some selfish post about ‘giving thanks”. I hope you give thanks when two people in your family die unjustly…wicked soul.
Firstly, there must have been a VERY STRONG INDICATION to warrant a CS for an IUFD (intra uterine fetal demise). Very few reasons exist and there is definitely no EMERGENCY reason for deciding a c/s on such grounds.
Secondly, it is the OBSTETRICIANS responsibility to ensure that the foetus was alive or dead after delivery. What checks did they do on the baby post extraction from the womb? It is only ethical to DIAGNOSE DEATH clinically.
Rocephine is a broad spectrum antibiotic which the lady would have needed anyway BUT anaphylaxis to it as described above could have been managed well especially as the lady had already shown early signs of allergy (the swollen lips) which resolved after a while, well before death. What did they do after this poor lady had given them such a ‘generous sign’?
    The Verdict.
1, the doctors who delivered the baby were negligent and liable for murder of an infant
2, the doctors who looked after the woman post c/s are liable for negligence as they failed to recognise and manage an anaphylactic reaction properly (this is medical student stuff regretably)
3, the Sonographer/Radiographer who did the scan should be investigated and prosecuted.
4, The dept of health should develop protocols/checklists that should be adhered to at all times by health care providers. This Mitigates/prevents ugly incidents like this
5, to the family of the bereaved, DONT LEAVE IT TO GOD TO JUDGE. A crime had been committed on two of yours, DEMAND AND GET JUSTICE!!!!…this might actually help correct/improve the system.
6, AND to those posters that can’t discern an injustice from a spiritual event, I hope your time to experience a consequence of the systemic failure in the Country would not come….but given the way Nigeria is at the moment, that time might not be far off……..

A dead baby should be birthed naturally. You induce labor and give birth to the child naturally.
Rocephin is used in treating infections, mostly in the blood. Some ppl react to this drug so it's advised that a patch test be carried out before administration.
I'm sorry for your loss. It was the carelessness of the doctors.
