Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court has given four Nigerian football players six-month jail sentences after pleading guilty to allegations of illegal stay in the country.
In Kisutu, an administrative ward in the Ilala district of the Dar es Salaam region of Tanzania, Andrew Okoro, 23, and Chiku Odia, 25, appeared before Magistrate Frank Moshi and after pleading guilty they were given the option of paying a fine of 100,000 Shillings or serve a six-month jail term.
The duo chose the jail sentence after failing to pay the stated fine.
The other two Chikereke Messaiah, 22, and Onyekwu Daniel, 22, also pleaded guilty of illegal presence in the country. Magistrate Gabriel Mirumbe was left with little choice but to condemn them to a six-month jail sentence after both failed to pay a fine amounting to 50,000 Shillings.
Okoro claims that he came to Tanzania for trials with relegated top-flight side Ashanti United but could not make a breakthrough. He added that his manager, Aishi Shaban, supported him to gain access into the country. Shaban took his passport and $500 before flying to South Africa.
Odia who was a football player with Mwanza-based first division club of Toto Africa said he lost his passport and reported this to the police station only to be advised to check with his embassy for assistance.
Immigration prosecutor Partick Ngayomela stated Odia has been in the country since 2012 and had been playing for Toto Africa but after the team’s relegation he failed to secure another club. Ngayomela also added that Okoro and Messaiah came to Tanzania for trials with Ashanti United, but failed to be recruited, while Onyenkwu came for trials with Coastal Union, but his performance was not successful.culled
*Tanzania?na wah!!!
Igbo kwenu.
ReplyDeleteThey were sent to jail because they are 9jerians. They feel they'll be up to no good soon.
Very right
DeleteTheir fine is equivalent to N10k...very sad! Going to jail in a foreign country for failing to pay a fine of 10k. Even d 9ja based players r not sufferng like dat..wetin dem find reach tanzania?must dey play outside d country?
ReplyDeleteSome Nigerians really have no ambition! Amazing! How can u go Tanzania of all places. If u a serving jail for illegal stay in a country, the least u could do is choose a better one. Tanzania indeed. I hv never heard anyone put in prison in naija for illegal stay. Country where anything goes.
ReplyDeleteYou are very stupid for making seem as if Tanzania is not a place to go.
DeleteAnon 10:09, abeg shatttaaap there. Is Tanzania really a place to go? No matter how bad Naija is, can u still compare it to Tanzania? When their citizens are even hustling to get visa to come to Naija and better their lives, ure here typing rubbish. A person dat leaves Naija in search of greener pastures only to choose Tanzania, is d person making progress or wot?. Pls if u don't have anything to offer in dis post, then just SHUT IT!!! Abeg
DeleteI second u anon 12:47pm, what is in Tanzania? Despite d problems in Nigeria, Nigeria is far better than Tanzania, whosoever decides to go to Tanzania frm Nigeria to go n hussle has nt progressed, instead d person has retrogressed, except u ve a good job there, which is few.
DeleteAnonymous 8:30 When u sayed Tanzania of all places what exactly is your point??
ReplyDeleteI meant: there is nothing wrong with living in Tanzania LEGALLY. But going to live in Tanzania illegally and be in jail is not worth it. If u want to risk an illegal status in search of greener pastures, go to France, UK, US even SA etc. At least if u go yo jail there u can beat ur chest and say I tried my very best. But Tanzania???? Mbanu. Anno 8:30.
DeleteSome comments here are very disturbing...."how can you go to Tanzania of all places" "Tanzania ..naw" what do you mean by that? For your information, Nigerians are almost in every region of Tanzania, searching for soccer clubs to play, professional jobs etc. If you guys are better of in your country why not stay there? It means life is anywhere and they think is better they try life elsewhere where they can get an opportunity to earn living. And I believe those guys (jailed)have relatives, if things were that good in Nigeria, why not assist THEM TO ESCAPE JAIL? , TZS 100,000 IS equivalent to 55 USD...so I wonder why would they fail to pay such small change to escape jail while they are from rich country? be wise guys, life differs, Nigeria can be economically sound country but it doesn't mean the rest of the continent IS poor...it is the country which is rich, when it comes to individual some PEOPLE in there lives in maximum poverty situation JUST LIKE IN ANY OTHER COUNTRY. and stop playing victims, laws should be respected. I cant live in Nigeria without following immigration rules while am A Non Nigerian PERIOD. IF YOU WANT TO LIVE COMFORTABLE ANYWHERE, YOU HAVE TO ABIDE TO THE RULES.

ReplyDeleteHaba! Why?
ReplyDeleteFellow Nigerians, Dear Tanzanians,
ReplyDeleteAfrica in general is in a developmental phase which we all know. Nigeria is some miles ahead of the lot. However, the issue onnground has generated enough criticism and bad mouthing. I am of the opinion that wherever you find a life, live there. And in living there, be sure you are not breaking the laws of the land which includes your immigration status. Nigerians are generally known as adventurers...we dare every situation life presents. But in daring, we should obey the laws of that land.
I live and work in Tanzania, my wife and kids live here with me. I have a decent job at least and my immigration status is not under question. In the light of this, I enjoy freedom and security. Low risk to life, stable electricity, and good relationship with the people. I will not ceae to mention that the majority of the people are poor.
The conclusion is, as a smart Nigerian, why would you choose to go to jail in Tanzania? Friends believe me, if these guys had good intentions they would have involved the Nigerian community into the issue. I alone can pay their bail charges let alone other senior Nigerians here. There is more to this story than presented, I believe so.
of all places tanzania , nigerians which way forward
