Mother Afusat Saliu 'Gets Nigeria Deportation Reprieve'.

A woman who fears her daughters will be subjected to female genital mutilation in Nigeria will not be deported for at least another day, family friends say.
Afusat Saliu, 31, and Bassy, four, and Rashidat, two, from Leeds, had been due to leave on a Virgin Atlantic flight to Lagos at 22:20 BST on Thursday.

The airline's boss Sir Richard Branson received more than 1,000 tweets calling on him to intervene personally.
The Home Office would not confirm whether deportation had been delayed.
Ms Saliu and her daughters were arrested by UK Border Agency staff on Wednesday.
'Keep up pressure'

Anj Handa, a close friend of the family, said: "Afusat was meant to be given 72 hours' notice before she was actually deported, and the Home Office totally ignored that. Finally they have accepted that.
"She is not going to be deported tonight or tomorrow morning but that does not mean she is not going to be deported.

"She has been given an overnight reprieve but the campaign is still very much ongoing and the lawyers are still working on her judicial review.
"We are still urging people to keep up the pressure to help her stay in this country while the case is reviewed."

Ms Saliu's solicitors BP Legal have launched a judicial review in an attempt to allow her to remain in the UK.
They say officials have ignored their own guidelines by ordering her deportation before the review is heard.

'Human rights'
Earlier, Sir Richard Branson said in a statement: "Without knowing the specifics on the case it is very difficult to comment in detail on a legal decision taken by the Home Office.
"While Virgin Atlantic cannot confirm whether any passengers are or are not flying with them due to data protection laws, they would view any case like this with the safety and welfare of all passengers their primary concern

"Regardless, if Afusat Saliu and her family are deported to Nigeria we call upon the UK and Nigerian governments to do all they can to protect the family and ensure they are not put at risk of female genital mutilation."

Sir Richard described female genital mutilation (FGM) as an "horrendous practice and a serious violation of internationally recognised human rights".
He called on the authorities to give the Saliu family all the support and protection possible.

Forced marriage
Ms Saliu fled from Nigeria in 2011 after her stepmother threatened to subject Bassy to female genital mutilation. Ms Saliu, who is herself a victim of FGM, was heavily pregnant at the time.
She has said she fears both her daughters will be subjected to the practice and forced into marriage should they return to Nigeria.

The family converted to Christianity in the UK and worry they would be targeted by Islamist militants Boko Haram in the west African country.

It is understood the Salius were taken into custody and detained at a holding centre in Sheffield before being moved to a family immigration centre in Crawley, West Sussex.
More than 120,000 people have signed a petition calling on the Home Office reconsider the case.

A Home Office spokeswoman said it did not comment on individual cases.BBC

    3. Very typical of my brethren. That's how a friend of the family who was about to be deported from London to naija, came up with all sorts of absurd excuses just to remain in the UK.

First off, he was arrested for credit card fraud and all sorts, so in the process of establishing his immigration status he was found out to be illegal. Sha after a while he was remanded at the deportation camp which was where he suddenly realised that he was 'gay', and would be 'killed' if deported..lol (of cos he was lying). Mind u this issue came up way before the gay bill was passed in Nigeria o. Like 2004-05. He went further to argue that the UK had no rights to depart him because they colonised Nigeria, hence he had a right to seek refuge in the UK.

Lol omo come and see how they argued his matter back and forth. Then it was pointed that, even if his life was in danger etc. Why was he committing fraud in a country he was seeking refuge? which was the reason that he was caught abinitio. It became a matter of seeking asylum vs credit card scam.

He was there for a while but was later granted bail, on the basis that he was a first time offender, and to be able to ascertain his gay claim. Which rarely happens but he had a good lawyer.. as they wouldn't grant bail once u made it to the deportation camp..and being that he was caught stealing. If found guilty he was to serve time in jail for fraud, and then be deported. Otherwise he had to prove his asylum story.

Long story short brother man jumped bail and is still in London till date without proper or legal documentation. So if he's caught again na naija sure pass. Would anyone pity such? Nah I don't think so. Let's respect ourselves.

    4. An addendum. Majority of Nigerians who live illegally abroad are the ones who commit the most blunders in the countries that they choose to live illegally. I couldn't tell u of how many of such cases has been recorded in both the UK and the U.S alone.

If u are fortunate to smuggle yourself into any country to seek the so called greener pastures, why not respect yourself and NOT indulge in scams of any kind? It will be an insult to the government of that country if they find out that u enjoy their benefits illegally, and ontop of it u steal from their citizens. After now my people go begin whip in sentiments and start to cry help when they are arrested. What do u want us to do? Applaud u or insult them for departing u?

Na una go collect benefits, commit tax credit frauds, go into stores to steal etc, and what do u expect? The ones I pity are those who are working genuinely and making money tru hard work even though illegally without papers. At least they are trying to make money the right way. Abeg I tire for una. Make I stop my epistle. Okbye

It's so cheap and unpatriotic for people to keep telling these lies just to remain abroad. Its always claims about being killed as soon as they step into Nigeria for being gay, Christian etc.

Madam, Boko Haram does not have your time, and there's no where in Nigeria where little girls are forcibly circumcised. Stop taking advantage of Nigeria's already battered image to make things look worse than they actually are.

  35. Unfortunately female genital mutilation is still very prevalent in our country. Even though it's not being talked about like before it's still on going and some people especially women believe in it. A friend whose wife is from Osun state had her daughters clitoris removed without the father's knowledge. This happened about 2 yrs ago. So yes, she may be right. And if she is a convert to Islam that also is an issue cos she will face serious persecution. These things are on going silently. May be she didn't present her issues well. But believe me they are serious issues.
