Chinedu Ejikere before he was killed |
FROM MY INBOX
On the 1st May 2014, Chinedu Ejikere “Edu or Edu Wondon”, the first son and the breadwinner of his poor family was brutally murdered by the Nigerian Police on Obioma Street, Achara Layout, Enugu after he had just gone over to see a friend from the close by Umunogo/ Obianodo Street where his mum owns a small grocery kiosk.
He was Shot at close range in his chest region in what was apparently an illegal arrest gone wrong.
Mr George Eluka of 16 Amawbia Street, Uwani, Enugu friends with Edu Ejikere initiated the supposed arrest of Edu as they had done a business dealing and Edu was owing him just over 100,000 naira so he went to the police and ordered for Edu’s arrest.
While Edu was at Obioma Street, Achara Layout, having gone to see a friend, policemen in plain clothes then attacked him. They handcuffed him and started beating him up, and in trying to put him in the car, one of the policemen tried to poke him with a loaded gun and it fired.
What then transpired after he was shot was an act of inhumanity.
Having fired a gunshot, the police drew attention to what was happening as onlookers started running because they thought they were armed robbers. The police left Edu on the road for dead and drove off, realizing he still had their handcuffs, which is a significant piece of evidence, reversed back to remove the cuffs on him and take their handcuffs thereby leaving no evidence.
On arriving at the scene a crowd had gathered trying to help the young man who everyone in the area knew as a hardworking, jovial individual so the police started shooting into the air to disperse people and of course had everyone running for their lives again. While in the process of trying to remove the cuffs on him, the people started shouting trying to alert everyone to block the road with anything so they won’t be able to leave.
And they panicked and left without totally removing the handcuffs.
The members of the public then hurriedly took Edu to Eastern Medical Centre, Enugu
where the doctors tried to save his life but failed.
The serial number on the handcuffs #10338
Signed- Achara Layout Neighbourhood Association.

ReplyDeleteImagine! And the man "wins bread" for a family. How will the family cope? I'm tired of police in Nigeria. Very unprofessional... #doctorbobby
ReplyDeleteMadam Stella, letr me make this clear -a creditor can decide to arrest his debtor if he refuses to pay him after a long while but in this case i think they were on illegal arrest (d creditor tried to intimidate his debtor with police)thus d police did not wear uniform. Even if he sends them to arrest him, it's obvious he did not want him shot. Nig police is very unprofessional and incompetent otherwise why cork a gun on an unarmed man? Even if the accidental discharge occurred (as they claim), they should have rushed him to the hospital. RIP mister, and may you get justice. Ant to his family members I say: 'ndonu, kasienu' - God will surely raise another bread-winner for you. Amen.

ReplyDeletePART ONE
For many Nigerians, the just concluded Worker’s day holiday was a welcomed rest day from their usual every day hustle and a day they spent valuable time with their family and friends but for the Ejikere family in Enugu it was a day they will never forget. Shot at close range in his chest region in what was apparently an illegal arrest went wrong.

PART TWO
ReplyDeleteThe members of the public then hurriedly took Edu to Eastern Medical Centre, Enugu where the doctors tried to save his life but failed.
Now this incident begs the question, what did Edu do to deserve this? what crime did he commit to warrant being killed by the Nigerian Police who swore an oath to serve and protect the Nations citizens? How long will police brutality in Nigeria go on for with the authorities bringing the culprits to book? What then happens to this family who will no longer have anyone capable enough to provide for them like Chinedu did? Will Chinedu’s police killers go unpunished because they hide behind the law and his parents cannot afford the best lawyers?
This debt Edu was killed for was because he was trying to be enterprising enough and hustle to his best in providing for his poor family as our government usually advises and as a result became an intermediary to some visa agents hoping to earn commission for business he brought. Mr George Eluka, his friend then asked that he help him arrange a visa to Qatar through the agents and gave him money. While the application process was ongoing, Mr. George changed his mind and decided he does not want the visa anymore as according to him he was no longer sure Qatar would be the best place to move to in search of greener pastures but by this time the visa application process had already started and the agents would not refund their money. Edu then agreed to pay back the money but only in small amounts, as he didn’t have the total amount. A promise he vowed to fulfill and was currently doing so until Mr. George initially arrested him with policemen from the SARS unit for the 1st time. The arrest, which then led to his killing, was supposed to be the second arrest by the same unit but then led to his death.
The actions of these few police officers call into question again the illegal activities and the brutality that Nigerians have to endure in the hands of our Police Force and further removes what is left of the little confidence Nigerians have in their Police Force.
We therefore plead with you to help us seek justice as together we can change this recurring trend and change Nigeria for good.
@THE REAL STORY if the story is factual, then that's why it's not good to help people. Let their family members help and assist them. Because with the ungrateful people, you, the outside helper would become the cursed one in their opinion. May the man's soul rest in peace Amen.
DeleteA lot of times i wonder what state of mind the writer of this blog is in? She is either swearing or jumping into incomprehensible conclusions. I wonder why she thinks the person that sent the police should be arrested? What crime as the person committed by lodging a compliant to the authority?

ReplyDeleteI think its time the police chiefs acted on this. If that handcuffs were assigned to somebody, the police should prosecute the person for murder and should also compesate the family of the deceased. If not so, it will be so obvious that they are protecting the murderer who is hiding under the police uniform. ALL WE NEED IS JUSTICE
ReplyDeleteEverything is just upside down in Nig.
ReplyDeleteI am suprised to read what is happening. The said George is known to me and is my brother from my town. It is also heart breaking that a life is lost and their is no replacement to that. It is also disheartening because names are mentioned in the public for a very sad news. The height of it all is that these two men were friend even unto death, and with the issue at stake, it may appear they were not in talking term before this incidence. Unfortunatly, The Nigerian Police Force has once more displayed unprofessionalism in the discharge of their duties. Chinedu and his hosts never knew they were enjoying their last moments before the incidence happened. George never bagained with the police to kill his friend and am sure the police initially never had the intention to kill the young man. SO WHICH WAY? I am thinking that the better option would be that the IG of police should call for negotiation outside the court. Chinedu's family should be properly compensated reasonably, the Elukas should also be compensated for publicly damaging their names since they followed the legitmate means of conflict resolution. The policemen who went for that job should be retraind and others like them should also be retrained, Chinedu, as a good person would be happier if no further lives are lost and no futher pains are inflicted on others. People should help in consoling the families.
ReplyDeleteWell said, only that I don't know who gave you the idea that Eluka family should be compensated. George Eluka may not have committed any crime if he had reported what happened but now he is an accesory to murder and will also be charged for preventing justice.
DeleteMy friend, Anon 11;29am, thanks for your gentle contribution towards my opinon, all of us are involved. The highest problem we are all facing is that we lost that gentle guy, Edu, that, has no replacement. George is just a unit of the Elukas and not The ELUKA FAMILY. Nigeria police is the major culpit here and they need to compensate offended members of the public. The Ejikeres are the major people to be compensated, but it doesn't mean that the police that committed the crime and that are pretending not to know the truth of what happened from day one, should give impression of not knowing what to do. The NPF we all know has a good number of lawyers working with them, but they should also remember that they need the moral support of the public to function very well. I am insisting that the NPF should compensate the Elukas and not just George because the Elukas will now find it difficult to function very well in different areas where they are scattered throughout the world. Their names are now damaged and they may have hindrances here and there because of the mistake of the NPF. We are looking at justice in all its totality. The compensation in any form can at least restore the Elukas' names. I advice the Ejikeres not to go to the regular court sessions, since the result will be official compensation for manslaughter. Settlement outside the court may favour everyperson more. Though the police committed manslaughter, but it is more responsible using a legitmate authority in conflict resoltion than all these boys that call on their cult member to shoot their enemies. Edu was a well known good man that deserves resting in peace; the family needs moral, spiritual and material support and the incidence calls for deeper reflection. The Elukas mourn Edu, Okpatu people are crying over the incidence and all of us living in Enugu will definitly miss Edu woundon. RIP my brother.
DeleteNigeria police, catch BH dem no fit, all they are capable of doing is harassing Nigerian citizens, drinking ogogoro, and collecting bribes. Shame on you.
ReplyDeleteDo not keep silent rebroadcast till it reaches if of police
ReplyDeleteWell, its a common practice in Nigeria to use the police for debt collection but why should the police go after a an unarmed man with guns.. why do they believe in using intimidation on innocent people but when there is a common face up with common thieves, they run.
ReplyDeletePlease can one or two 'proven guilty' gun-hungry police men be used as scapegoats? can they be sentenced to death or life imprisonment to send a message to their fellow gun-hungry policemen? Let this case not be swept under the carpet like all others
Anonymous 2:54.may God punish you.terribly.....murderer like you...were talking life and you're talking name.maybe it should have been you instead
ReplyDeletePeople like you should never be allowed to hold public office because you have the spirit of boko haram...people who get annoyed when others speak.
