A Nigerian court on Thursday said intelligence agents broke the law when they seized the passport of ousted central bank governor Lamido Sanusi and ordered the government to pay damages and publicly apologise.
Sanusi was suspended on February 20, less than four months before his terms was set to expire, after accusing the powerful state oil firm of stealing nearly $20 billion (14.5 billion euros) of public funds.
Hours after the suspension was announced, Sanusi returned to Lagos from a regional bankers meeting in Niger and was met by intelligence agents at the airport who confiscated his passport.
The ex central bank boss immediately filed a complaint claiming that his rights had been breached.
At a hearing at the Federal High court in Lagos, judge Ibrahim Buba ruled that the actions of the Directorate of State Services (DSS) “deserve condemnation” and ordered it to return Sanusi’s passport immediately.
The DSS “has no power to seize the passport of any citizen” without due process, Buba added.
He ordered Nigeria to pay Sanusi 50 million naira ($300,000) in damages and issue a public apology.
Defending the DSS actions, justice ministry lawyers suggested that Sanusi’s passport was taken because there was evidence that he had financed terrorism.
Buba said the state lawyers had mentioned the allegation as “an afterthought”, noting that Sanusi has not been charged with any crimes.
President Goodluck Jonathan said Sanusi was removed for “financial recklessness”, allegations the ex-central bank boss has fiercely denied.- Vanguard

DeleteJustice ministry lawyers are extremely daft. If the passport of a citizen is seized cogent reasons should be given immediately. An afterthought always indicates a plot to rubbish the accused. By the way, if there's evidence of Lamido financing terrorism, shouldn't he be arrested and charged to court immediately, as over 5000 lives have been lost as a result of this? Daft Ministry.
ReplyDeleteMemphis this your face eh? Chaii e mean pass anything! the sight of the meaness fit resurect Hitler from death! Abeg make I throw before e suck all my unquenchable juice.

ReplyDeleteThose of us who feels notting concern them when things about government corruption and mismanagement are mentioned here need to check themselves. If you are happy about your situation then no need to complain because I feel when you speak out here on social media your voice will be heard. We give comments about Tchidi and other others 300comments but only give important issue about our government corruption and mismanagement 5 comments it shows lack of change from our youths. If we want change, then we need to voice our mind on issues concerning the nation because most changes you see in other countries starts first from social media. Very sad we are more interested In Gossip comments than our political and economic problems. Next year is general election most people are yet to register and most won't vote and make sure their votes are counted if you don't participate/speak out how do you want your government to change? We really need to change our mind set. As for this government issue with Sanusi all I know is that this man will carpet them at the court of law. Those who occupy our government offices are not intelligent/smart they are rather opportunist.
ReplyDeleteKileleyi nso bayi?
DeleteOh ok. I decided 2 read thru. Yh. I've observed dat gossip posts garner more comments dan political issues. D truth is, very few people want to bother themselves further wth all dis naija stories dat touch d spine. We all just want something 2 get our minds off d failed state of things. But then again, if we don't pay attention 2 it, who will? Oh well. *shrugs. Let d omojuwas do deir thing. We'll sit bk n pray. :D I'm anonymous. Cuss me, I can't b bothered mehn.
DeleteJay, u know why a lot of us won't vote?....cos it seems like our votes don't count...with the stealing and exchanging of ballot boxes, Godfatherism and so.....with the way APC and PDP are going...who told u they need our votes. Imagine a country so blessed, when its campaign time all we hear is I will give u light, good roads and water! Haba!!!....if the thing never tire u...e done tire me.....
DeleteAm tired of praying for naija, its time for we the youths to take charge. Let's Start paying attention to our gov and our economy. Its time for a revolution biko
DeleteWith all he stole they still want to give him 50 million? Hmm.. Nigeria! That is a boko harram judge. the rich are getting richer, i hope the government will appeal this judgement ?.
ReplyDeleteI love this man, someone who can never be bullied into silence... Whether paid or not, what matters the most is that his passport was returned to him.. #itsGoodToKnowYourRight
ReplyDelete@i_ChoPtas_Not
Sanusi shouldn't be given a kobo, he should console himself with what he has stolen. How convenient it is for the judge to grant his petition in such a short while, when the same can't be said for a common man...EEE!!!
ReplyDeleteIt is not yet uhuru for Mallam Sanusi. Abi no be naija again we dey? This is just part one, so that when court finally says Mr. Presido has power to suspend a CBN governor there won't be any murmuring of injustice. Watch out forr part two.
