Weaves VS Natural Hair Debate By Editi Udofot And Hannah Pole.

Editi Udofot with weaves (left) and Hannah Pole with natural hair

Celebrity hair and makeup artist Edee Beau talks about Weave vs Natural and The Politics of Afro Hair on BBC radio 4

The discussion was introduced with a mention of how Lupita Nyong’o wears her hair in an "unaltered state,” Then came the debate itself, which introduced Editi Udofot (CEO/Founder of Edee Beau)  pitted against Hannah Pool a journalist - both are black. Editi had on a blonde weave and Hannah wore her hair in an Afro.

Hannah offered a critique of the ethics of human-hair extensions, explaining that only rich white men benefit from the sale of these..... Editi is a successful black businesswoman who sells hair extensions

Editi explained that not all black women’s are blessed with thick and soft hair being the key word for Afro hair like hannah’s,she said her natural hair has always been thin and tough and requires some help via hair extensions to achieve a maintainable look.

Now,we may still say that it's unfortunate that women with natural hair feel they must alter it, but we need to be honest and not claim that in all cases "natural” looks better. Women of all races alter their natural hair with hair coloring and extensions.

For some women "natural” means sacrificing beauty privilege, so the big question here is ......what is or isn't “pretty”?
Weave or Natural?

I was rocking d natural look... Most Times I braid it and my stylist was always grumbling cos my hair was tough besides am always scared to comb d hair cos of d serious pain to my scalp... I used different products even d new dark n lovely natural lock products. Now I enjoy mi permed hair.. I rock dem curls and they re banging. Natural hair ko supernatural hair ni... Wateva rocks ur boat jare..

    4. Kendall you are doing something wrong. You should moisten your hair with water before you comb.
I'm natural, I wear my afro proudly, my husband loves my natural hair.

  3. Stella biko it depends jare.. But what ive learnt is that most men love "natural" and a few others dont really mind. Its ones choice at the end of the end but personally I tend to switch cos as women, our hair needs to "breathe" sometimes biko before it damages completely. If you have good natural hair, rock it and if you dont and dont really dig Lupita's style, get your weave on. As long as you don't fix extentions all the time cos it damages the hair. In conclusion, whatever floats your boat biko. .

  4. Madam stella put on your weave and stand in front of the mirror and take a good look at yourself. All you will see on your head is fake. You can make your natural hair beautiful. How was it done before the hair extensions came?i am sure you see the very native fulani women who have these very tiny braids with no extensions and how beautiful they look. I am yet to see that white woman who will want to make her hair like an african woman. "emmancipate yourselfves from mental slavery" Bob Marley. No pride in the black man

  8. Hannah Pole, is she eriterian, somalian or ethiopian? They have soft curly or straight natural hair that has been 'unaltered', I have observed. The state and texture of their are no comparisons to kinky natural hair that has been 'unaltered'. No. I'm not Editi Udofot. More grease to everyone's elbows.

  9. A little bit of both does the trick. Not everyone's natural hair looks fab and not everyone has got that extra time to maintain it everyday. Weave however makes one look better and kinda sophistictated, the pics above wud explain better. For me, I do weaves more often, and do naturally when I want to let my hair breathe.

  13. I say to each his own but for the purpose of this discussion I will say this: I have natural hair but I wear european style wigs from time to time. I also thought I had unmanageable hair till I actually started taking care of my hair. I was thrilled to watch my curls pop and see my hair flourish. The fact that I'm natural does not mean I feel superior to those that use weaves to look beautiful. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, we are all beautiful no matter what we have on our heads. Once we accept that fact life will be a better place.

I'll check out your blog now.
I went for the big chop in Feb without transitioning. More like the daring "African Queen" look and, I have to say, it's altered my dressing a great deal.
I'm not in a hurry tho, this is a journey. A very long one at that and so I'm making it patiently.
I hope to find a natural hair stylist when me hair grows out a bit to find out what type of hair I have and what hair regimen to begin using.
I know it will all be worthwhile.

  14. Overflogged debate the hair boards are full of team natural versus team relaxed now these two are busy bringing team weaves which are worn as protective styles into the mix have several seats already ladies.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think it boils down to taste and individual differences. Some women need to wear weaves because of scalp disorders such as alopecia; in this case, they haven't got an option and would definitely look better with extentions. However, it becomes an issue when ladies feel they have to wear false hair to feel attractive or belong. Either way, as long as the wearer is comfortable, every other thing is secondary.

  16. Me, i go Natural because its less stressful to maintain, 20minute trip to the salon maybe once a week or sometimes twice depending on the way in wearing it, but with weaves, its constant combing and changing and worrying about monotony. And then i have beautiful hair soft and curly. We thank God.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Abegi! They should rest this weave against natural hair hullabaloo. Women! If weaves works for you rock it, if the natural look is more your thing kindly carry on. This debate has been done to death already, let it rest OK? Thanks and bless.

  18. I just love my natural hair.

  19. I've been natural now for close to 8 years with a period when I chopped my hair off 3 years ago only to re-start the natural process.

The real tragedy here is that from a very young age, black women are teaching young black girls that having their God given natural hair is something to be ashamed of. I have seen 2-3 year olds with relaxers and fixing weavons! I don't see how these kids will not be bald by the age of 30 from burnt out follicles - Traction alopecia is real ya'll

I fix weavons on my natural hair at times when I want to have some kind of protection from regular manipulation or change up my look. But I always revert back to my natural hair in between styles. I am totally anti-relaxers and hate the fact that black women believe they have to revert to such extreme measures to conform to an ideal that is not even real!

    1. How do you comb your hair? I'm only natural because going to salon is too expensive in uk. Most times I use wigs.

    2. she is sooo right. Abt combing your hair:
never throw away your spray bottles cause you will need them for your olive oil and water mixture. Spray your hair every day with that and do that before you go to sleep adding sheabutter to your hair while tying up. Never comb ur hair dry. Never!!! Always moisturize and deep condition, bi-monthly. Wash ur hair once a week with conditioner and water mixture (co-wash). I don't use shampoos cuz it sends my hair on strike. Also let youtube be ur friend. So much content there

    4. It's not about a person hating her hair but rather about ease of management and the look the person wants to have at the time. My hair is natural but short, I get a weave when I want it long, this could be kinky Afro or sleek Brazilian depending on my pocket really. People need to stop reading psychological crap into this!
I had long hair some years back (down to my shoulder blades) and it was fine until I changed my mind and cut it.
We black women like to have choices -deal with it!!!

  20. Both are pretty. I love weaves, I mean good hair and I love to look good but it all boils down to the individual. Your adorns your beauty but doesn't in fact make u beautiful, if u re beautiful, then u are. For a year now I have been growing my natural hair nd I am absolutely in love with myself. What rocks your boat really.

    ReplyDelete
  21. It's all about choice . Natural sure looks good, when worn right, same with weaves. But me- i don't even know what my natural hair looks like. I have cut it severally to achieve something good, yet no show. Though recently a friend introduced me to this hair therapist and am hoping for the best.

  24. I was team natural for almost 4 years, i just couldn't find the time to nuture my hair anymore this alongside the fact that hairdressers started running away for me whenever I had to braid my hair in spite of this my edges got fuller and my hair healthier.

My point is all these team natural women should stop shoving their ideologies down on our throats, same with those that arent using creams.
I love my natural hair but chemically altered hair is easier for me to deal with
I love me my dark cocoa skin, it looked way healthy than my present skin however I look more gorgeous with a lighter skin color.
Call me vain, yup I own it body, mind and spirit

I put on wigs or weaves when I'm too lazy to maintain my dreads.

Whatever rocks your boat abeg. The only reason I went for dreads was because my hair was so tough, touching it alone was painful so you can imagine sitting down to get it braided.

  39. For those wondering how many people I know with traction alopecia, you may want to check out well documented photos of Naomi Campbell and Serena Williams. Those babes will definitely need follicle transplant to recover their hair lines. Also, if you're wondering why your hair line keeps receding by 1cm every two years, na onset of alopecia. A word is enough!
