UNICEF Says Ebola Virus is Spreading Fast in Guinea And To Other West African Countries...

UNICEF has announced that an Ebola Outbreak has killed at least 59 People in Guinea.
The epidemic has hit the capital city Conakry. “At least 59 out of 80 who contracted Ebola across the West African country have died so far” said UNICEF in a statement to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
Ebola is spreading FAST to other West African countries.

There are currently no known treatments or vaccines for Ebola, a viral hemorrhagic fever that kills up to 90 percent of those who become infected.

The virus spread through direct contact with blood, faeces or sweat, sexual contact and unprotected handing of contaminated corpses.
“This outbreak is particularly devastating because medical staff are among the first victims … hindering the response and threatening normal care in a country already lacking in medical personnel,” revealed UNICEF.

Ebola hemorrhagic fever is a severe and often deadly illness that can occur in humans and primates (e.g. monkeys, gorillas).
Ebola hemorrhagic fever has made worldwide news because of its destructive potential.

Causes
Ebola hemorrhagic fever (Ebola fever) is caused by a virus belonging to the family called Filoviridae. Scientists have identified five types of Ebola virus. Four have been reported to cause disease in humans: Ebola-Zaire virus, Ebola-Sudan virus, Ebola-Ivory Coast virus, and Ebola-Bundibugyo. The human disease has so far been limited to parts of Africa.
The Reston type of Ebola virus has recently been found in the Philippines.
The disease can be passed to humans from infected animals and animal materials. Ebola can also be spread between humans by close contact with infected body fluids or through infected needles in the hospital.

Symptoms
During the incubation period, which can last about 1 week (rarely up to 2 weeks) after infection, symptoms include:
  • Arthritis
  • Backache (low-back pain)
  • Chills
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Malaise
  • Nausea
  • Sore throat
  • Vomiting

Late symptoms include:
  • Bleeding from eyes, ears, and nose
  • Bleeding from the mouth and rectum (gastrointestinal bleeding)
  • Eye swelling (conjunctivitis)
  • Genital swelling (labia and scrotum)
  • Increased feeling of pain in the skin
  • Rash over the entire body that often contains blood (hemorrhagic)
  • Roof of mouth looks red
  • Treatment
There is no known cure. Existing medicines that fight viruses (antivirals) do not work well against Ebola virus.
The patient is usually hospitalized and will most likely need intensive care. Supportive measures for shock include medications and fluids given through a vein.
Bleeding problems may require transfusions of platelets or fresh blood...NYTIMES

  3. You need to stay up to date, Stella.

Virus in Guinea capital Conakry not Ebola.

Tests on suspected cases of deadly Ebola virus in Guinea's capital Conakry are negative, health officials say.

On Sunday, UN officials said that the virus had spread to the capital, a port city of up to two million, from remote forests in the south, where some 59 people have died.

But a World Health Organization (WHO) spokesman told the BBC the Conakry tests had come back negative.

Ebola is spread by close contact and kills between 25% and 90% of victims.

There is no known cure or vaccine.

Symptoms include internal and external bleeding, diarrhoea and vomiting.

After two people died from a haemorrhagic fever in Conakry, samples were sent to the Pasteur Institute in neighbouring Senegal for testing.

WHO spokesman Collins Boakye-Agyemang told the BBC these had shown that the victims had not been infected with Ebola. It is not clear what killed them.

The outbreak is said to be the first time Ebola has hit Guinea.

Recent cases have been thousands of miles away, in Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Outbreaks of Ebola occur primarily in remote villages in Central and West Africa, near tropical rainforests, the World Health Organization says.

  16. Hi Stella, from that post on the bleeding lady that died...I think nigerians need education...I mean medical education.
I have always known the average naija person isnt medically exposed while I was workin in naija...bcos u had to explain every single thing...even things dt werent so medical...at dat sef...dey wont understand.

Now my fear has heightened cos from dt post n many others in d past...even SDKers who r supposed to be atleast educated were soundn so uninformed. ..am nt meaning to hurt. ..am just very concerned.

Since I started practicing outside naija...I av been so amazed at how much patients knw...even the uneducated ones...and wen u ask abt der past medical history, dey give u so much details ud b wondering of dey went to medical school...dis has also help reduced stigmatization eg people go around wt stoma bags ( 'poo bags' usu wen dey av had probs wt der bowels and d poo has to be diverted thru their abdominal wall either temporarily or permanently...no shame cos everyone understand s...dey learn stoma care wen in hosp n dey cope well..some even opt nt to have a reversal surgery sayn dey r copin well).
Even urine bags...wen I catheterise pts...I dont admit dem, I discharge dem n days later ask dem to go to der GP to have it removee cos it aint a big deal...dey go to work..or even go on holidays wt it...have romantic dates sef. ..it doesnt come in d way. ..

I am nt tryin to just rant here...bt I want to suggest that...since dis blog is an 'all-rounder' *winks...can we have like a weekly feature where you post a summarized write- up abt certain diseases ...am sure this wl go a long way...we start frm common diseases to rare ones...atleast let d educated ones b informed first...it wl trickle down to the whole community later...
I would av offered to be doin dis weekly write-ups bt dt wl be tantamount to re-inventing the wheel...bcos my husband is in naija and he + his colleagues do dis kind of weekly summaries for some companies...am nt sure I guess its one of des banks or telecoms company that texts it weekly to der subscribers...am also sure der are other cases like that ...where u can subscribe n dey send u weekly and mayb if u speak to dem...dey can let u feature it on ur blog.
The other option is say mayb I and other medics on ur blog can suggest topics for u weekly and u can post say a Google summary or anything u find on the web...or we can even do d search n send to u ( I am nt sure abt copyrights sha)...
Bcos if we dont do anything abt it now...d ignorance wl persist...we al dont av to go to med schl to understand des things...

The oda thing is health promotion. ..ppl need to grow out of der superstitious mind...I am nt here to argue weather der is jazz or not...even if der is sebi all of us dey go church dey pray alredi so we r covered...d other causes of al des diseases is wat we shld focus on..which arw medical causes...atleast dt one we can help ourselves wt it.

Loos like am ranting too much...bt if ppl respond well to dis...I can take d responsibility to see aw we can make dis work...

Its nt only gossips n sunday laffs that shld tickle our fancy...let us be informed...
U dont knw wen u wl be needin it...mayb wen a relative is affected ...n d doctors r alredi bored of having to explain every single thing frm d scratch (so dey leave u out of it)...soundn informed myt b a good way of gettn more out of any consultation.
    Sorry for the rants...
Now to d post...hope people can see ebolavirus sef is a cause of 'bleeding from all orifices'...any condition that can consume ur coagulation/complement system can cause u to bleed to death. ..and dependn on d causes...sometimes just a single shot of vitamin K is all u need to set everything ryt...and nt any high falloting meds.

    Thanks all ...expectn ur responses

  17. the west are really trying every thing possible to see that underdevloped countries are used as guinea for their money- making ventures in health. People should be warned about all this free medical tests given at meetings or fairs SOME and i mean SOME are used as a means to infect the black race. Be careful what you submit yourself to.

Now, i don't know how true this is but i guess it has to do with the study that made some researcher come up with the theory that women with larger hips abi butts are brainier than thei skinny counterparts. a close friend told me that when he married his wife in London she was fat and big and started losing weight when she wasn't planning to rill got to a size six and upon his findings he discovered that there something put in the food they consume to make blacks thin and dull while making the white big and intelligent. I was told. Can someone verify this, pls?
