Okonjo-Iweala’s False Claim On Video: PREMIUM TIMES Responds

The real footage of what transpired between minister of finance Ngozi Iweala and the house of reps members as obtained by PREMIUM TIMES.

Okonjo-Iweala’s False Claim On Video: PREMIUM TIMES Responds

''Our attention has been drawn to a statement by the Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, through her spokesperson, Paul Nwabuikwu, accusing us of uploading a ‘doctored video’ of what transpired during her appearance before the House of Representatives Committee on Finance.
In the statement, the minister used an earlier published two-minute video by Channels Television as a yardstick of what the ideal reporting should be concerning that controversial session, describing the Channels publication as  “the authentic video account of the encounter.”
We find it unfortunate that Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala would seek to create an impression that her session with the lawmakers lasted about two minutes only.
It is even shocking that the minister and her aides do not understand that two media organizations will not necessarily see the same issue or event the same way?
In any case, why is one reporting of the session okay by the minister because it suits her agenda and the other is doctored because it doesn't?
For the avoidance of doubt, we stand 100 per cent by our published video.
We challenge Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala to mention any scene, any at all, in our video that did not happen or was doctored.
Our video was not to question or dismiss what Channels Television published. In fact, we agree completely that Channels reserve the right to determine how to report an event based on the best judgment of its reporters and editors. We had also referenced the Channels clip in our earlier stories of the incident.
Unlike Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala, however, we believe the footage published by the station was definitely just a part of what transpired at the session.
It was in order to ensure that Nigerian’s get a fuller picture of what transpired that PREMIUM TIMES sourced the full video.
Our aim was not to repeat what Channels had published (all what Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala accused us of omitting were contained in the Channel’s clip), but to show that a lot more happened than was shown in the Channels video.
Perhaps Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala would love to explain to Nigerians why she preferred limiting all her encounter with the lawmakers on that day to just a two-minute video, when ours, over four-minute long, is clearly more comprehensive, showing what transpired before the episode shown by Channels.
Just like Channels Television and other responsible media houses, we are at liberty, using our best editorial judgment, to ensure that true and complete information on actions of public officials are brought to our readers.
We therefore assure all our readers and viewers that we would continue to abide by basic journalism principles and continue to reveal that which public officials want to keep hidden.

  1. Hon. Jibrin was right!

As a minister of Finance of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, her mien, appearance and body language was unprofessional.

Is she kidding? They are inquiring about Our BILLIONS OF DOLLARS and you are gonna "manage".

Just trying to Nollywood her way out.

Will she try this "slacker move" at a WORLD BANK meeting?

    1. Because she is minister does ir mean she is not human. The Mrs Okonjo I knw is a peace maker not other wise. Plus d video is obviously cut nd join anyone that uses a fone video will even knw nd d premium times is prolly being used as a political fiddle. Channels probably published d relevant things. I like dat we saw this. D only person unprofessional there is d Jubril big headed pig breath guy. Lacks respect and fundamental courtesy. Ngozi apologised for inconveniences nd acknowledged that everyone had been working hard. News people like myself should b careful not to be political instruments. If she had called in sick after plans had been made dey wld still talk. D guy prolly has issues taking order from women. Insensitive person like d jubril guy saying we when his colleagues were all so quiet trou le maker looking into d camera d shit he must also have trust issues reading btwn d lines nd bla. Am sure it's d money he'll steal dat was he's concern like he cares abt anyone but himself. If d budget isn't done ontime problem. D lady on above is saying body language. If u have nothing relevant tk say SU.

    2. I beg to differ, he has the right to use 'we' because he spoke on behalf of his colleagues. I believe they were lenient enough to ask her to come back.
When she started, she was acting like she could drop on the floor anytime, she suddenly became strong and even ate groundnut that was offered.
At work, if I have ordinary presentation, I will not be as casual as the Minister was. Let her go and come back when she is 'well'.

  3. SMH for Nigeria. A minister of her calibre, coming for such a high powered meeting and claiming she was not feeling fine and would do the bit she could do.

Absolute rubbish. She shouldn't have appeared at all instead of claiming ill health. That's the standard rule at work. If you are ill, you stay away. Once you report for work, you do the job without excuses. Could she have said this at a world bank meeting?

  5. Jeez... I was cringing in my chair and rolling my eyes constantly. Like seriously! Ngozi was totally unprofessional. Just like Jubril, I noticed she was acting poorly at first but when she started taking about due respect, a miracle happened and she appeared strong again! GTFOH Ngozi....you are totally out of order

  10. Channels tv is not playing any pranks read the response well as a journalist you can cover several hours of an event and you will use only a portion and if you watch the channelsnreport well you will clearly see thatnitbwas a balanced report ifnanother medium decides to use another part of thenfootage it's their choice and may I also school you that in editing you can actually cut several voltages and make them one and if premium times decides tomdo that it's theirchoice .

  11. I watched this video 2 days ago and l still can't believe what l saw. It's so cringeworthy! Imagine chewing on epa and plantain a few mins before the meeting then claiming you are sick just to avoid answering questions?! Then, when she realised the committee didn't bite, her illness miraculously disappeared!
    God help Naija

  12. I did see the part that Channels TV chose to air and it was misleading. I actually took sides with Ngo based on what I saw. She started off as if she would pass out and when the committee insisted on her coming back to make the presentation, her voice got stronger.

Who's she fooling? Trying to transfer questions to her subordinates for a ministry that she heads. Finance, for that matter. Billions have started disappearing against elections next year. Same thing from madam oil's ministry, Sanusi is missing some small change (over $40b) from his books.... that matter was quickly squashed and Nigerians didn't even notice. This government is taking advantage of our short memory.

  15. @Carla grace you must be high on ngozi okonjo,or you must be high on something else ,to think nigeria is ngozi private company ,yes she is a minister of the federal republic of nigeria ,if she is sick she should have stayed in her sick bed ,and write a letter to the committee ,for she to appear before them then she is fully prepared ,so madam /mr carla grace you and your madam okonja should take several seats ,and if you dare abuse me back to sender .

  17. Ok, so I don't like making comments but this is just over the top propaganda from premium times. I mean if u watch channels tv version which look less edited and makes more sense than this over edited version from premium times. I'm not in supporting anybody or any official holders or try to justify anybody action but premium times doesn't need to bring a false report to bad mouth channels to justify their action. Naija and their wahala. This is unnecessary

  18. She did not say she ll not answer any of their questions she only express hw she was feeling

If she did not show up now they ll say she is avoiding her defence on the budget matter. Now she is here they re still complaining
Why not go straight to the point and ask your question or tell her to do the presentation

Some people re jst fault finders
