Nelson Mandela, the anti-apartheid leader who became South Africa's first democratically elected president and a symbol of reconciliation to many around the world, has died.
The country's president Jacob Zuma said tonight the 'Father of the Nation' of South Africa passed away aged 95.
As South Africa's first black president, the ex-boxer, lawyer and prisoner No. 46664 paved the way to racial reconciliation with well-chosen gestures of forgiveness.
He lunched with the prosecutor who sent him to jail, sang the apartheid-era Afrikaans anthem at his inauguration, and traveled hundreds of miles to have tea with the widow of Hendrik Verwoerd, the prime minister at the time he was imprisoned.
His most memorable gesture came when he strode onto the field before the 1995 Rugby World Cup final in Johannesburg. When he came on the field in South African colors to congratulate the victorious South African team, he brought the overwhelmingly white crowd of 63,000 to its feet, chanting 'Nelson! Nelson! Nelson!'
His imprisonment included 18 years on the notorious Robben Island penal colony, when he and other prisoners were forced to work in a limestone quarry and he first suffered the lung infections that were to dog him for years.

DeleteOh shit!!! very sad! R.I.P DEAR.
ReplyDeleteA complete man of valor...an embodiment and a TRUE icon of democracy. I can confidently say that it would be almost impossible to ever find a man like Mandela in this world again.
DeleteI imagine that the arc angels will stand like soldiers to welcome him home. I imagine that God will grin, perhaps laugh...hug him...and then salute him for his resilience and strive for humanity. Perhaps God will applaud Mandela...them say to him...well done my humble servant. If Mandela lived in the days of Moses or Elijah, his name and story would have made the bible.
A true testament of doing it right by God and man... and then dying a dignified man. RIP my Comerade. Candle in the wind.

ReplyDeleteRIP to a great man.......he made his footprints a very visible one on d sand of time........A HERO IS GONE!!!
ReplyDeleteThe question to ask is whether or not the people of South Africa
ReplyDeleteare better off than they were or is it a nation in chaos. There are
in our opinion no "great men" and most if not all have feet of clay,
and histories that have been changed to make them appear greater.
Like all the rest of us they put the pants on the same, eat,
deficate , are born, live and die, and require sustainance. However, if
we are to label some "great" then it is the men and women who
struggle daily providing the labor that creates and sustains the
civilization we live in and get very little in return for their efforts.
The "great" men of today have turned the world into a world of
poverty, hunger, starvation, and genocide. In Nigeria 1% own 90%
of the wealth. To reduce this to simplification, take a watermelon
and remove 90% of it. What you have left is what those who
build nations share among themselves. Enough of "great" men. Lets
have more honest men with integrity, who don't have their egos
stretched to such an extent that they forget without the "non-
great men, they wouldn't have what they have, which is obscene.
having said dat Nelson mandela is a great man bcos he did the right thing RIP MANDIBA
RIP NELSON MANDELA OOOO!! He step down after just one year, because he was disappointed, after 27years of suffering. So lets recap!! South Africa is the worst country in the world. Give black man something to control! ! #1 in HIV, Armed robbery, extreme poverty!!! My heart is broken. Nigerians na #2 for HIV, #2 for kidnapping and robbery, Sudan is still practicing slavery as present!! I got alot to say, ,,,,, black people na waoo
ReplyDeleteRIP Madiba
ReplyDeleteOne of the best things in life is dying knowing u made an impact in d world_nuffin equals that feeling. Am highly touched that no1 has come here to criticise Mandela, even tho I knw how "bad" our mouths are arnd here. This goes a long way to prove a good name is way better than riches. As far as we know him,he's a good man but above all these I really hope he's one of d few of us who's acts(hidden n seen) will cos heaven's door to be opened unto him to rest wif our father eternally cos it really would b sad if wif d impact he made here on earth, how much we love n respect him,he still doesn't make heaven. Am sorry guys but ds is what I always think when people I love die.
ReplyDeleteRest in peace Mandela
ReplyDeleteExit of an icon.
