Saraki Tells ASUU To End Strike To Honour Festus Iyayi - What Do You Think?

The representative, Kwara Central Senatorial District, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, on Wednesday said that the time has come for the leadership and membership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities to end the over four months strike that has led to the disruption of acadmic activities.

Saraki, who was reacting to the death on Tuesday of renowned academics and former President of ASUU, Dr. Festus Iyayi, in a road accident, said the union should consider calling off the strike in his memory.

Iyayi was killed in the accident blamed on the convoy of the Kogi State Governor, Captain Idris Wada, in Lokoja, while on his way to Kano for the National Executive Council meeting of ASUU.
The NEC was to consider the proposal by President Goodluck Jonathan on ways to end the face-off with the Federal Government.
Saraki, a former Governor of Kwara State, told the union: "While there can be justifiable reasons to sustain the strike, the death of Iyayi has, obviously, changed the tune of the music.
"In his honour, even if all the terms and conditions for reopening our ivory towers have not been met by the government, you should consider the reopening of the universities."
And to the Federal Government, Saraki, in the statement signed by his Media Office, said: "Education should not be toyed with by any government that is intent on developing the country.
"This is more so for a government that has proclaimed its desire to move the country from the label of a developing one to a developed nation.
"There is no sacrifice that is too much to be made in the bid to develop the country.
"All that is required to ensure that this our country with limitless potentials achieves the height of greatness is by being prudent in allocation and spending of our resources and commonwealth.
"The demands by ASUU are not out of place.

"It is for the good of the nation."

*When will ASUU stop using this strike to hold the government to ransom at the expense of the youth?it has become annoying...will this strike better the universities or is it for their selfish interest?personal gain?

  1. ASUU calling off the strike will not be a bad idea, but making them call it off on this basis is trying to manipulate and blackmail them!
This man died fighting the course of ASUU,so the govt should be d one to fulfill it's promise.
Our govt is not trustworthy, deceitful and wicked so I really don't blame ASUU btw.

  2. Asuu should better achieve deir aim b4 calling off d strike and stop listening to what people are sayin. Its better we stay at home for 1yr and make d educational sector better dan to resume and still kom back home after 6months. If asuu should call off d strike nw, another strike will surely kom up later if deir demands are nt fulfilled. Y nt settle everytin at once so dere won't be strike again forever.

  3. My response to this: *When will ASUU stop using this strike to hold the government to ransom at the expense of the youth?it has become annoying...will this strike better the universities or is it for their selfish interest?personal gain?

Stella.....get back home one of these days and take a look at the universities...they say university graduates are not employable ba?

You need to understand what the studying conditions are like in most universities here!

    It really is terrible.....

Dilapidated classrooms, over populated hostels, a total breakdown of infrastructure...

Yes the lecturers may be expecting some extra allowances promised them by FG during the 2009 Negotiations, but the overall cash is for the well being of education in the country.

Selfish interest or personal gain? In what way pray tell?

Lets see if this will go a long way in improving the lot of the current pidgeon-english-brandishing lot of graduates we have!

    My 2 cents

  4. To make matters worse see una Education Minister, na complete agboro, tout!

whoever made Nyesom the Education minister? The agboro has NOT made any serious utterances about the strike, instead you have the likes of Labaran Maku making utterances about the state of Education......Chai!

This Agboro/Barrister/Minister is interested in just his own pocket, I Bet he'll be running for the River State Governorship position soon, politics is currently more important to him than solving the problems within the jurisdiction of his job discription.

  5. Staying at home doesn't change anything.. We are the ones that would suffer. "When elephants are fighting, the grass suffers". Dr bukola saraki, made a point.

  6. stella i can tell u that nigerian unis are arrant nonsense. i was in unilag, in a class of almost 200,u get to d class no light, no microphone, no sit, unless u get there like 1 hour before...i finished with a 2;2 because unilag never allowed me maximize my potentials..now i just finished my masters in d uk, in a class of 25,my school toilet is better than a 5 star hotel in unilag. ur score is ur score here because lecturers are not hungry, d lowest lecturers gets paid in my school is around 40k pounds per year. lecturer go dey beg u to ask questions. i was one of d highest in my masters class because uk enables u to fully maximize ur potentials. so yes d strike should go on because we have thieves as our government. and my case happens with a lot of nigerians. i paid for most of my assignments in unilag or buy carton of five alive for my lecturer to get my score,,, u cant try that in d uk, na jail u go end up. trust me our education system is at d lowest. i never for once entered d toilet in my department in unilag, if u pass d staircase to d toilet, u can throw up because of d smell. wen my mark was mistakenly calculated in my final year my lecturer said i shld sleep with him before he calculates my right mark o!not that i was even begging for mark. na God help me for that school. u can only appreciate d low level of our education system if u schooled in nigeria 1st then schooled abroad. let me not even talk about my hostel in my uk uni, a big studio apartment just like a 5 star hotel,d only thing it dint hav was a t.v. i could go on and on..all i know is ASUU should not give up until the government meets their demands.

  7. the strike should not be called off until the man is
buried in the 3rd quarter of next year, this would be
a sign of respect to the man and his family, but if
they decide to call it off,i would not go back to
school until the man is buried.

  10. A man lost his life while trying to tackle the problem(s) of ASUU and you are here telling the association to end the strike. That's quite unreasonable and unfair! How can they give up now? The Federal government should meet all their(ASUU) demands so as to honour the man-he was a good man.

  12. If they want to call off the strike they should call it off but can this man not drag sentiments into the matter; As if he too will understand if his salary for 4 months is not paid to him but instead used to help in paying up ASUU's demands. What is wrong with our people? Oga please have some sense, that's all.
