If there’s a newsroom in heaven then I am sure that late Godwin Agbroko, the former THISDAY editorial board chairman is throwing a party there right now.
This is because his daughter Ruona has just graduated from the University of Westminster in London with a Masters (merit) in Broadcast Journalism.
For those of you who are too young to remember Godwin Agbroko, he was a famous but very humble journalist and was assassinated a few days to Christmas on his way home from work in 2006. His murderers are still walking free.
Ruona, who was then already writing a column in THISDAY has carried on his name, all this while, quietly.
She left THISDAY to work briefly with GTBank and then NEXT, until the paper went out of print in 2011.
Ruona’s work at NEXT saw her named the only winner of the 2010 Niall Fitzgerald Prize for Young African Journalists, sponsored by Thomson Reuters. The prize came with scholarship to South Africa, where Ruona studied Journalism and Media Studies at Wits University Johannesburg, graduating with a distinction.
Now based in London, Ruona has gained work experience with the Financial Times alongside her studies.
congrats Ruona,Daddy would have been so proud of you if he was here.
ReplyDeleteCongrats Ruona, I read your column in Thisday out of loyalty to your late dad. I remember the day clearly. I was coming back from the market when my colleague(with whom I shared a passion for Agbroko's Thisday backpage) called me with the sad news. I cried as if I knew him personally.
Continue to rest in peace, Godwin Agbroko. Chai. That man could write! What a loss.
Congrats dearie. Am soo happy 4 u. Wish I could give u a friendly hug.
