Stella Oduah:Only If The Media Could Read In Between The Lines By Mabadeje Dododawa

The media frenzy that followed the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA)’s purported purchase of two bullet-proof cars for its logistic use and ferrying of foreign missions to Nigeria has shown the inability of the Nigerian media to determine when it is unconsciously lending itself to frivolity or dutifully discharging its function of keeping the public abreast of developments in the society.  The sustained attention on Ministry of Aviation is an intelligent exploitation of the agenda-setting role of the media by career politicians, self-acclaimed activists and battered concessionaires who have age-long scores to settle with Stella Oduah for her transformational efforts.

Surprisingly, we read more noise than the real issue in the papers; and the media seem to be failing in its responsibility by acting lame as evidenced by its inability to intelligently investigate the matter rather than joining the frenzy; and becoming an ordinary tool in the hands of a gang with interest, even not known to the media.

I desire some level of sanity and professionalism in the reportage of this matter to enable the reading public whose addiction to reading newspapers remains the oxygen on which the lives of the various publications hang, have value for their daily investment, as against the unwitting response to orchestrated campaigns that enlist Oduah’s and the Aviation ministry on front-pages of newspapers daily since the leakage of “the armoured cars purchase documents” to Sahara Reporters by a faceless Nigerian Edward Snowmen.

Since then, the Nigerian media has gone to bed, only feasting on ‘outbreak of news’ from a not-too credible source. Shockingly, publications that were hitherto reputed for editorial objectivity have dedicated their front-pages to prosecuting a vindictive fight against a perceived enemy.

But really, should the media not conduct its own investigation before taking a position? Also, in some of the opinion pieces I have read on this issue, it was suggested that the ongoing unintentional media-framing of Stella Oduah as a corrupt officer of the state had the hands of concessionaires that her revolution at the Aviation industry had swept away and political opponents who have decided to take the opportunity to deal with her because of her effectiveness and closeness to the President.

Taking all these with a pinch of salt, if I were a Journalist, I may be motivated to seek the underbelly of this travesty by embarking on a review of the performance of the Minister and activities in the Aviation sector. This will enable an understanding of the reforms that pitched her against the resolute concessionaires who are determined to empty their pockets in dressing her in an attire of corruption.

See, Wale Babalakin’s Bi-Courtney has been fingered in this. Femi Fani-Kayode’s name has come up in this mess, so as Dino Melaye’s efforts at colouring the situation as official corruption very visible through self-driven crusade and activism.  I really think the media should stop dancing to the rhythm of mischief coming from marauders attired in affluence and fame.  The media in any nation is the only defence of the masses and harbinger of fairness and impartiality but I am shocked to the bone-marrow that there seem not to be any ingenuity or demonstration of professionalism in the reportage of this unfolding event.

Imagine the following scenarios and contemplate what the integrity of our media will be in months to come. Let us say Ms. Stella Oduah appears before the respective panels of enquiries and it turns out that the purchase of 2 armoured BMW cars by Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is a hoax or at best an idea that is yet to be executed.  Also, has someone in the media thought that the documents hosted on Sahara Reporters could be fake, created to attack and unsettle the Hon. Minister of Aviation or has anyone attempted to obtain a copy of the same document from the responsible agency?

Could it not possibly be that these documents do not exist in the records of the NCAA and associated agencies in the Ministry of Aviation, and this nonexistence explains why the cars were not sighted or registered with the National Security Agency (NSA) and the State Security Services (SSS)?  Do you know that this position can be validated by the fact that Sahara Reporters did not obtain the documents from any of the agencies under the Ministry of Aviation? Is it Sahara Reporters that will substantiate the originality and existence of the trouble-generating documents? Or has Sahara Reporters told anyone that it has a copy of the order made by NCAA for purchase of the armoured vehicles?  And if it does, do the documents show that the cars are for the personal use of the Aviation Minister or registered in her name?

Has anyone thought that Stella Oduah’s response to this allegation of unsubstantiated corruption could become the most embarrassing moment for the Nigerian media for its non-diligence and lack of professionalism in reportage of the event?  I thought of this because inferences drawn from newspaper reports and the judgmental posture assumed by some of the newspapers of have shown the inability of our media to read in-between the lines to sense the dangers in partaking in a mob action.

Okay, let us imagine that there was actually a bid for the purchase of the cars and First Bank won the bid but the cars are yet to be purchased, and a project at ideation stage has unfortunately generated so much controversy, in the media and our streets. What will the media tell the reading public?   Or say the vehicles were ordered; do people not know that vehicles financed by financial institutions are less expensive? Considering available information, these vehicles were said to be on lease for 36 months and financed by First Bank, can’t a journalist go to First Bank to find out the terms of the agreement instead of tarnishing the women with corruption?

It has just occurred to me too that should this hypothesis play out in this manner, the only individual who could help unravel the misery will be the person who leaked the documents to Sahara Reporters in the interest of the country. He/she will have to come out and say what he/she knows about the transaction and tell Nigerians that the document leaked is indeed authentic, otherwise I will not be fooled by the daily headlining of Stella Oduah as a wrongdoer. Rather, the name will continue to resonate in my mind as a champion of the Nigerian Aviation sector transformation and will continue to wait for her building of the Aeropolis that will total change the face of air travel in Nigeria.

Our own Edward Snowden needs to show his/her identity. If he or she does not show and loses the opportunity of confronting the Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah with his/her facts, do we need to believe the exaggerated reportage and accounts of events by a faceless individual?  We have to be wary of instituting a culture of framing and staging of public officers by a tiny cabal that has sworn to destroy the country. I feel this individual will not come out because the rationale for his/her action is mischief and deceit, which his/her appearance will unravel. Accordingly, the media will get to know the malodorous side of the story which it has innocently been protecting in the name of fighting corruption!

Editors need to avoid the pressure that interfere with good judgment and get them to pretentiously enlist their support for a mob action as it were in this case. I hope that Ms. Stella Oduah would be allowed a fair hearing beyond the obvious media alignments which are capable of destroying available facts.

I will expect Stella to ask the panels of inquiries to determine the source of the documents or ask that the individual who leaked the document to Sahara Reporter show his face to enable Nigerians know that the action was indeed in the interest of the nation, and give validity to the documents.  After all, Edward Snowden showed his face because he believed that his action is in the interest of humanity.

But sincerely if either the House Committee or the Presidential Panel of Inquiry could not bring the Nigerian responsible for the leakage face-to-face with Stella Oduah during the hearings, it may appear that she is being staged for vilification. Would it be impossible that the same individual, who generated and justified the needs for the vehicles, if they indeed exist, leaked the documents to Sahara Reporters? If it turns out that way what do say? By leaking the documents, the responsible individual believes his or her action is appropriate and defendable, and he would be a hero for it. So, let should be confident to act in good faith and authenticate the documents with his/her appearance at the panels too.

  11. Let us all calm down and try to understand what his saying. I personally believe that Stella Oduah is guilty, but Nigerians should also learn to stop behaving like a herd of sheep; anywhere we're directed them, that's where we go. No questions asked, no investigations done. Does it smell like rat then it must be a rat; that's our mentality. It's not all our fault though, I must say our politicians and their corrupt behavior has made us not to trust them. But if we continue this way; swallowing everything the media dishes out without questioning then there's no hope for this country.

  18. All this is need less now because as at yesterday's hearing the NCAA alluded to the fact that they purchased the vehicles albeit via a lease arrangement and they were taking the honourable members ( though not honourable) to see the vehicles at their operational base in Abuja. I watched the interview of the Director of Finance and account on Channels tv Sunrise daily this morning and I was so disappointed in the man's responses to questions from the presenters. I was embarrassed for the man because it was so obvious that a lot of things were not just right with the purchase. This woman led herself into all of this mess and this is what greed can do if you allow yourself to be controlled by it. This woman was made before now and I wonder why she would want to descend this low after having made money before now.

  19. Read through this piece carefully. While I accuse the author of bias for the Minister, I think he calls into question, something that I hav always worried about-the quality of journalism in the country. Rarely do U hear independent reports made by media houses. Rather, we are being told wat a politician said or a statement released without checking the veracity of the claim. Until the author recognises that no politician can be trusted, then he can produce a perfect piece.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Laughable at best. The NCAA boss told us how Coscharis is the sole importer of BMWs and why they had to buy any price he gives them. In fact we were told the cars were budgeted for in the NCAA IGR so what is this fella saying. The problem with Nigeria is we like to spin the truth on its head - even when the facts are staring at us in the face. When she knew that all her tall tales justifying the car purchases were not working, she has now employed this cheap quack PR to launder her already over-soiled image. The depth we have sunk as a nation is simply unbelievable.

  21. U all should give the writer a brake, he is only suggesting that investigative journalism should be carried out by the media, instead of crucifying the woman on the alter of baseless evidence, there have been different reports on this issue and we as nigerians have to be careful on what to believe in before we allow the tiny political cabal continue to destroy every little array of hope in any of our productive factor. Besides sahara "Aboki" reporters always carry fake and controversial news. And it's still been on the news that CBN governor Sanusi Lamido, has 7 bullet proof cars, who is probing him? Or maybe stella oduah's own is a case of gender discrimination in nigeria. Aunty stella I don to talk abeg post my comment, make I for get moral to comment again.

  22. The problem is not the bulletproof cars, its the alleged price at which they were bought.

  24. The part that is annoying me is where he insinuates that the cars might not even exist. Didn't he see the note by the Minister where she claimed she followed due process in purchasing the cars. All of u stoning and condemning her should take a chill pill and allow d law to take its course before sentencing her. Its not proper. Every 'criminal' has d right to defend himself in d law court. The young lad who threw the bomb in boston is still facing trial. Nobody has lynched him cos he threw a bomb dat killed people and nothing will be done until his case is over and done with. Just like in Stella's case, let the authorities probe her, find her guilty and give her d punishment she deserves.

  35. On the issue of these bullet proof cars, we are aware that the IGP has the CBN Gov also has about 7. Now the question to be asked is on ranking why shouldn't the minister of aviation have bullet proof cars in the face of these mighty toes she has stepped on these concessionaires who feel it was their birth rights to rape the aviation industry at will.

The next issue would then be was due process followed. NCAA has explained that it got approval for her budget to spend N240m pa on cars. The total cost of the cars including the bullet proof cars is N126m for 2013 well below and within the 2013 appropriation approved for NCAA. And of course the budget for 2014 will also take care of expenditure for 2014.

No one knows or cares about these facts which are unveiling gradually. If you noticed, some papers have started dropping the story because they have started reading between the lines and have realized that these cabals have just used them to spread falsehood which will be embarrassing to the media tomorrow. None of these commentator who are so quick to use foul language will be honorable enough to apologize to this lady when it turns out otherwise.

Let's go back to the associated airline crash. Recall that as soon as it happened so many people exposed their ignorance including the former minister of aviation mr. Fani KAYODE all caling for the resignation of the minister.

When AIB came out with the interim report and read it covered by the media showing that the crash was a result of pilot's indiscretion and wrong judgment even when the auto system in the plane told him that the plane was faulty. Which of these people who were saying our air space is unsafe and minister should resign have retracted their comments and tendered apology? Even Fani Kayode who quickly went to media houses to expose his ignorance have all buried their heads in shame and no one is talking about associated airline crash. No one has even blamed the pilot and published articles or abusive articles about the pilot. No one even knows his name or cares. A reporter said he came to cover the story of bullet proof cars and he is not interested in the associated airline matter. This is what this writer is talking about. People will no longer have respect and regards for the media if it is no longer independent, fair balanced, and objective in their reporting. I have been asking myself, is it that this woman who can buy 10 of those cars from her pocket if you all know the balance sheet of her conglomerates will now want to steal N255milion ?! Please ! But again I think Nigerians are generally very bored in these hand times and would want something to run their mouth on and have their views heard whether or not they have the facts. So this writer is saying, media, stop feeding the public with sensational and unsubstantiated stories and fanning the interests of some mischief makers who just can't deal with the fact that it is no longer business as usual in aviation. GAT1 was built vide direct labor at N645million whereas MMA2 was built as N4billion with a lot of bank debts and Efcc cases and AMCON bail out. The cobus that conveys passengers to aircraft was bought at N287million each whereas the actual price is less than N100million. The funding for MMA2 was quadripartite legal mortgage financed by so many banks. The repayment proceeds was diverted and the banks threatened to shut down the airport since it was security for the facility. AMCON came to the rescue. Where is the N4billion whereas the airport is breaking down everyday the escalator does not work and shops are springing up in obscure places to collect rents for maintenance. We should talk with facts and figures and show some enlightenment in our comments. I know that literacy rate back home in nigeria is still very high but we can be better informed in other not to ridicule ourselves before the international community that we don't know what we are talking about.

  36. Ok, now Coscharis explained and gave graphic details of value of the cars to the exactitude. He even offered to do a more detailed power point presentation to confirm that the cost of the cars are accurate and to show the reason it is so. This explanation has taken care of corruption, kick back fraud, inflation of price and shows minister has integrity and honour. Please publish details of Coscharis presentation. As a follow up to this article, I want all those who have shut their mouth in judgment and in accusation without knowing the facts to equally have some dignity and honor to also post their apology to the honorable minister of aviation otherwise the entire commentary here is junk and should not be fed to the world anymore please.
