Former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Dr (Mrs) Farida Waziri,OFR
has responded to allegations made against her by Baba Obasanjo
Obasanjo had in a recent interview stated that Waziri became head of the anti-graft agency on her recommendation by the convicted former governor of Delta State, James Ibori.
According to the statement personally signed by Waziri
"My attention has been drawn to a number of allegations made against me by Mr Obasanjo. One of such was the alleged involvement of former Delta state governor, James Ibori in my appointment. While I hold the office of a Head of state, either serving or retired in the highest esteem, I will like to put on record for the umpteenth time that this is totally unfounded, blantant lie and arrant falsehood. It is therefore worrisome when a man who has been twice a Nigerian head of state can descend so low to peddle falsehood. The truth is that I never met Ibori in my life until after months in office as chairman of the EFCC when I used to see him in the presidential villa.
It is on record today that I initiated the investigation that drove Ibori into the waiting hands of Interpol and Met Police. As such, it is illogical and nonsensical for anyone to continue to insinuate that Ibori has a hand in my appointment. I remember this was one of the lies Obasanjo's sit-tight pawns cooked to stop my appointment as EFCC chairman in 2008.
"On the issue of qualifications raised by Obasanjo, the qualification for appointment as chairman of the Commission as stipulated in its Establishment Act says that the chairman shall 'be a serving or retired member of any government security or law enforcement agency, not below the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police or equivalent; and possess not less than 15 years cognate experience.’
“Late President (Umaru Musa) Yar’Adua did not have to alter the Establishment Act when he was appointing me, unlike what Obasanjo did. Again for the records, I served in the Nigeria Police Force for 35 years and got to the pinnacle of my career before my appointment as EFCC chairman.
“If Obasanjo’s real age has not blurred his memory, I will like to remind him that I was a Commissioner of Police, Admin Force CID, CP General Investigations, CP Anti-fraud, CP X Squad, CP Police Special Fraud Unit where I secured the first conviction in a case of Advance Fee Fraud in Nigerian history.”
Waziri stated further that, “These are all prime investigative organs of the Nigeria Police, where I related with other law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, across the world. I must place on record that at SFU, I did not only relate with FBI, Interpol and Metpolice, among others, we carried out joint operations at different times on a number of cases. I have also led the Nigerian delegation to the Interpol Headquarters in France.”
She added that Nuhu Ribadu and Ibrahim Lamorde (the past and present chairmen of EFCC respectively), had both worked under her, thereby making the allegation on qualification baseless.
“This is in addition to my educational qualifications such as a first degree in Law, a master’s degree in Law and another master’s degree in Strategic Studies,” she noted. “I doubt if Obasanjo himself can boast of this level of educational qualifications.
I will also like to remind Obasanjo that no chairman of the EFCC has till date beaten my records in terms of investigation of high profile cases, prosecution, conviction and recovery.”

DeleteOBJ is a man I love. And I will say it any day or time that Nigeria has been privileged to have him preside over her. Jokes or sentiments apart, the fear of OBJ is the beginning of 'respect urself'. He's got the balls, even outside of power, he's still the boss. That aside, Madame Waziri stated the truth. I have had the privilege of working with her (under her) as per CIA trainings. And I was referred to her board studies from the UK, believe it or not. She may have done some wrong moves, she's only human. But the woman knows her onions. She quite intelligent too. I respect her a whole lot. Well, I don't know what politicking may have done her resume, but she's not one to be shoved aside. She's a warrior at hat. I doff my hat m'am!

DeleteI'm not a fan of Waziri and really can't say anything about EFCC during her tenure, but I must commend her for responding to OBJ....and within about 24 hours too! WOW! Kudos madam for that. OBJ talks about corruption as if he was Saint Olu during his tenure. The Ibori he's condemning thrived during his tenure and wasn't chased about with his dog(EFCC) at the time like some other governors and government officials were. A man who was outrightly booed when he attended a special service at RCCG in 2007, went ahead to list his "achievements" out of shame and was continually booed at. I'm sure baba Adeboye secretly had a good laugh then.

DeleteMatter of fact the very educated ones like Prof Wole Soyinka, Pat Utomi..etc...Will never be able to deal with Nigeria if made the president. English speaking or pen and paper writing is not what will change our nation. OBJ's intelligence is def not of the 4walls of any classroom. His intelligence is street wisdom in conjunction with his military/rugged intelligence. That was why he did better as both a military dictator and as a civilian president. Nigeria cannot survive under a mere administrator, truth be told.
While I do not condone that OBJ should rubbish the authority of anyone, but the man more often says the truth as is. He sees and understands these pple more than any citizenry can dissect them from afar.
OBJ till date remains the most prudent president we ever had. I for one was praying he stayed for 3rd term. By now a lot would av been achieved.
Yes he miscalculated when he chose sick Umaru, but he was hoping to cont to rule tru him. And that is why he keeps falling apart with stubborn GEJ. If GeJ would listen to OBJ, things would av been better. Many may not agree but that's the core truth. GEJ chose clark as his godfather, but the man has done nothing but make matters worse. ( At any rate, I do not fancy the godfatherism approach, but its needed)
OBJ's no nonsense approach is why these younger politicians will detest him. Am not saying the man has been holy or that he may not have pocketed our monies...but this baba left us debt free before he left office. He even left billions in our reserves account, only for the present administration to misappropriate our funds, borrow monies, plus sink us into more debts than needed. That's why the old man is aggrieved. Afteral he's not asking to be our president again, besides he doesn't need more money than he already has, he cannot go hungry till he dies. Mind u he's over 70. So whatever he says now is for our own good. I hope we don't start to appreciate him when he's gone to be with the lord. As I imagine that's when people will start remember most of what he's saying now in the future. God bless Nigeria!
