How Come Nigerians Doctors are only curing typhoid and malaria and one hardly hears that they have excelled in any new break through medically.

Should we assume that Nigerian Universities have become stereotyped with how they teach these students in the medical field or should we once again blame the governement for not concentrating on health issues in Nigeria or investing in Doctors?
Abroad, the government always provides special funds for doctors to do research work and they do not need to be told to do so,these monies come with their budget and is no big deal,is this also the case in Nigeria?
I am just wondering if there are no Doctors in Nigeria who can go in a lab in Nigeria somewhere and after a while come out and show us something that can give the common Nigerian hope?

  1. When Nigerian doctors are always on strike, the hospitals are not well equipped and the rich always fly abroad for treatment, how do you expect Nigerian doctors to perform like their western colleagues?
Our universities are trying their best just tha government is not doing anything to enhance better research and health care. These things require a lot of money.

  2. I am commenting as a fully qualified Nigerian dr who ran away to the USA to practice there. I am humble enough with full insight also to pronounce that my training in nigeria was rubbish. Yes I said it. Where u have lecturers teaching outdated things, 30 students using a single cadaver in anatomy practicals and over 20 students on one bed during ward rounds, what then do u expect??? You plant agbalumo and expect to reap peaches? Oh please. Get real.

  4. Nigerian Doctors are the best...When they live and work in the west! I know for a fact.Go to canada and see for yourself. Same goes for our Nurses overseas. They put in lots hours because they count their money while saving lives. However,I ve no choice but to cut home based practitioners some slack. After that robust debate on this blog about the hippocratic oath, following the strike action by Lagos Doctors, I am convinced that Doctors in Nigeria are unfairly treated! How dare I expect them to treat patients in their dwindling status? If the system enables these professionals, they would give their Indian counterparts a run for their Money.unfortunately, Like a virus, the 'Nigerian factor' has no regard for any sector. Imagine Doctors running around armed with their cvs,job hunting unsuccessfully; when a quarter of the country's population is ailing.Cry my beloved country...

  6. A good number of Nigerian doctors are smart, intelligent and knows their onion but the main setback is the lack of technologies. The Nigerian health system/amenities/technology is far more ancient than the word itself.

No new technological advancement to aid proper medicare what else do you expect of the doctors?
..test you for malaria and typhoid no matter what complaint you present. Once there is a parasite sighted, they treat you for that while the main ailment lingers....

Blame it on the government! They know! That's why they would rather flee to the u.k for a knee recap than igbogbi.

  12. Your take on this is too general. It is too general in the sense that you mentioned abroad. Abroad is just not a single place. For Nigerians, abroad is everywhere outside its shores.

Again, your take on this sound to belittling. Well, its not only Nigerian doctors that have not been able to have a medical break through. Besides, some of them have been announcing some of their break through but the media will not put it forward. This is unlike what would happen in a place like US. Besides, if Nigerian doctors have been battling with Malaria and Typhoid then it is not a sad thing. The Western world does not have a cure either for Malaria and Typhoid. I trust that you cannot show a prove for that.

When a Medical doctor who was a sound Professor by name Dr. Abalaka (an Igala man from Kogi state) claimed that he had a cure for HIV, what happened? The Americans wanted to take him to their health centres. They asked him for the break through but he refused to let it out until so they dumped him. In India, there are claims that people have cures for HIV yet the media do not report about it. Rather, the Western media try to suppress such kind of information just because they really want to sell and make much money from the produce of ARVs.

Nigerian doctors are trying their best despite Government negligence in providing them with the required laboratories, equipments, etc. They operate on different complicated anomalies like conjoined babies, kidney issues, etc but our people have a way of belittling and underrating their worth so they prefer to refer to people to India and other parts of the world.

This is my take on your assertion. Sorry if it doesn't sound polite.

  14. The budget of the reseach department of my faculty in this US university is more than the budget of the entire Education ministry in Naija. Not to talk of endowment funds by philanthropists, some of them long dead but with provisions made in their will for life.

How many rich Nigerians give funds to Universities, when they are not chasing after undeserved honourary doctorates?

Research and Innovation cost real money. Nigerian leaders are jokers who can't even pay the lecturers the wages they deserve.

I A̶̲̥̅♏ a doctor practicing in Naija and I must say what makes the huge difference is the ENABLING ENVIRONMENT our abroad counterparts Α̲̅я̩̥̊ε̲̣̣̣̥ blessed with. From the sterotyped lectures most of us face as med.students †̥ the 'Ɣε̲̣̣̣̥§ Sir,Ɣε̲̣̣̣̥§ 'Chief',house boy/house gal' norm that trail interns in most centres, one isn't encouraged †̥ learn †̥ know or think outside the box.Jobs/Residency slots Α̲̅я̩̥̊ε̲̣̣̣̥ no longer a function of merit but 'who Ʊ know'...the fangs of Godfatherism eating so deep into the health care system.U speak of research,†̥ be carried out where I ask?the ill equipped labs that Α̲̅я̩̥̊ε̲̣̣̣̥ present in most government institutions?who does research with epileptic power supply, not forgetting funding? So the average Doc works as best as (s)he can with what's on ground....'Malaria/Typhoid Docs' u say..lol.Should we desire progress, drastic measures need †̥ be taken starting with the 'Ogas at the top'.May God help us all!

  17. SDK, Nigerian doctors are brilliant in most cases. The environment they operate in isn't adequate for them, especially those who have improved on their career outside these shores. Most medical equipment these days require 24 hours electricity, which is a joke in Nigeria. How then do you expect them to improve on their profession? The government is to blame COMPLETELY on this. All we've been hearing since 2010 is "transformation agenda", "Vision 20-20-20", "PDP-2015"...

BTW, the area these *chinko* doctors put that nose no make sense at all. Water or any other liquid can easily go into that area, especially when he takes a bath or when it rains.

  18. Is there any institution in Nigeria that can boast of a research facility? Even if its just the very basic research. These things need funding and maintenance, such colossal amount comes from FG, state govt or foundations like that of Bill Gates, even banks and companies support such funding in other countries.
However in Nigeria companies focus on entertainment.
How much does the average Nigerian Doctor earn compared to the senators, whereas Doctors in Western countries earn an envious amount compared to other professions.
Before U throw stones count ur teeth well, sometimes U sound like a stark illiterate. Still havent gotten out of d shock, U boasting abt owning an EU passport??? Mehhhhhn U r just not it. You are still a native of Nigeria despite having other nationalities.

  21. Some Nigerian doctors seriously don't know what they are supposed to do. I've had 2 experiences in 2 different hospitals in Ajah (big hospitals). I had serious chest pains for a while, went to the pharmacy to get over the counter drugs (normal stupid way most of us are guilty of), and the pharmacist said I had an infection in my chest region, took some antibiotics, but it didn't subside, when I finally went to the hospital I was told its arthritis, I was so shocked cos I'm 33, was 31 then, I still took more drugs, it was when I traveled out of the country I was told by a doctor that it was the stomach ulcer that I had that was causing the pain, reflux and all, and after all the drugs there I got better can you imagine? Second experience was in january this year, I had a minor accident at home, got cut by glass and needed a few stitches, when the dr stitched me up and let me go and told me to come back for check up, I couldn't go cos I was travelling in 2 days, I got abroad and went to a dr over there the dr held himself from reigning insults on the dr that stitched my leg cos it was "rubbishly" done. And these 2 doctors are from big hospitals. So na only God go save us for Nigeria simple.

First its actually possible dt U̶̲̥̅̊ had arthritis Ąπϑ subsequent ulcer due to use of aspirin-like drugs.
Now abt u̶̲̥̅̊r stitch, simplest procedures with more modern methods wc are either not available or done by a doctor in a hurry.

Let Stella compare Nigerian bloggers and their gossip/picture recycling and leave Nigerian doctors alone.
Or better still let her compare herself with her western counterparts since she is European.

  28. According to www.whitehouse.gov, $76.4 billion will for the Dept of Health and Human service. $31 BILLION will be used to support innovative medical RESEARCH.
$3.3 BILLION will be invested into Hiv prevention and trestment.
$654 million will be used to bolster food and medical safety.
All other funds will be dedicated towards early childhood education, foster care, child support program and other things.

Part 2 continues...... next stop Nigeria.

  29. Part 2. According to www.vangusrdngr.com, Dr Ngozi okonjo Iweala said that N11.34 Trillion ( $69 Billion approx) will be the gross federally collectable revenue of which only N4.1 Trillion will be available for Federal Govt. Budget!

According to the minister, the projection is based on the OIL production of 2.53 million barrels PER DAY!

    *Benchmark oil price is $79 . So therefore 2.53million x $79 = $ 2 BILLION . That is what Nigeria makes a day!!

The minister said that the NON - OIL sector was expected to SUSTAIN the 2013 buget.

    Her breakdown was
    N387.97 Billion = statutory transfers
    N591.76 Billion = debt services
N2.38 Trillion = recurrent (non debt) expenditures; personnel cost + overhead cost.
N273.5 Billion = subsidy reinvestment programme.
    N497 Billion = power+works+trsnsport+aviation

    N705 Billion = education+water+agriculture+ HEALTH SECTOR!

    N320 Billion = police
    N364 Billion = Armed forced
    N115 Billion = NSA
N154 Billion = ministry of Interior.

    I rest my case.

    Please forgive all gbaguns.

  30. Sterra, naija docs are doing as well as they can in a stifling environment. Critical surgeries are done daily in our teaching hospitals. Like someone said eg cojoined twins etc. If you know sat challenges they do work with, you sef go hail them. They are brilliant. Just some that jus passed thru med sch and don't know anything. But many are quite good even in ob-gyn. No enabling environ. Stella you are still a naija babe ohhhhh. Come and help grow ur nation.

  31. One of the biggest problems in Nigeria is that our people like the concept of " abroad" and all that go with it.
I'm a Nigerian trained Dr practicing in the US, a lot of our American trained colleagues marvel at the level of intelligence we have. And some of them will refer their family members and close friends to us becos they know that we know our " onions". Yet a Nigerian patient, unless he's getting it free from you, will rather go to a "white Dr" because he has that same home mentality that "oyinbo" must know more than you.
Some will act like they are doing you a favour by coming to you.
Realy sad. We thrive very well because the environment and facilities make the medical practice truly enjoyable.
No to sound rude but a silent survey has shown that the Nigerian Drs get the most headaches from Nigerian patients. Even other Africans are more appreciative. They will come because they expect massive discounts and lots of freebies which is usually not a problem to give when possible but they still have terrible attitudes.
So I can only imagine what the ones at home go through.
    Excuse the typos.....
