Two months after the controversial deportation of Igbo residents, Governor Babatunde Fashola, Thursday, rendered an unreserved apology to the Igbos over the July 24 dumping of some alleged destitute in Onitsha, Anambra State by his administration, saying, “the action of our government was misunderstood.”.
speaking at silver jubilee symposium of Igbo think tank, ‘Aka Ikenga,’ at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, NIIA, Victoria Island, Fashola insisted that he could not allow differences on a subject matter tarnish the bond and friendship that were built overtime with the Ndigbo in the state. -
Fashola argued that his relationship with the Igbo remained solid and that many had misunderstood and misrepresented the actions of the Lagos State Government because of party politics.
''According to him: “The truth is that I do not have a problem with the Igbos, they know that because the largest herd of cattle I received during my father’s burial came from the Ndigbo. Those people who came under their many colours are not people I have a problem with, they are my kindred and my people.
“Also, there were people who did not clearly understand me and they have misunderstood words said or misrepresented actions taken in the way that it has pleased them to do so. To those people, I owe an explanation, not a defence of what has happened and that is partly why I am here.
“We have built a relationship based on tolerance, mutual respect, trust and love. That relationship was started by our ancestors, it was handed over to us and we have nourished it with a lot of trust, with a lot of understanding and with a lot of fidelity.
“Those who misunderstand that relationship, think that there is no value in that relationship I have come here to correct that because I place a lot of value on that relationship. If those people have misunderstood me or they have misunderstood actions taken by our government, here, now and today, I offer an unqualified and unreserved apology.
“Why should people feel compelled to migrate from one place to the other? Is there one part of this country that is less endowed whether in human or natural resource? Is that the problem? Is it the case that perhaps some parts are so endowed or not adequately managed?
Those are the honest debates that we must have. The political storm is gathering and allusions have been made to the issues I address, not only by the chairman, but by the President of Ohaneze Ndigbo. How can development be so difficult in the part of Nigeria that gave us Ike Nwachukwu, Chinua Achebe, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Odumegwu Ojukwu, Alex Ekwueme and so on, how can development be so difficult in that part of this country? I think those are the real issues.”
“I think we have been in the news of our relationship for the wrong reasons in the last few weeks, but if you listen to the voices of those who speak the loudest, you would see that they do not speak about us, they do not speak about the problems, but about themselves. The majority of us are concerned about how to make it better, that is what concerns us always in Lagos, and it is not an easy decision for me.” The pursuit of making it better makes us adopt policies which are always subject to the human text of fallibility”.
*what is your take on his apology?Medicine after death?
You missed the main thrust of this speech as usual, Stella.
ReplyDeleteThe apology was tongue in cheek. What he's really saying is that Igbo governors should develop their states and stop driving able bodied young men to hawk gala and things in Lagos.
That's what I got from it too. Technically, not an apology but advice/caution.
DeleteAnd of course who can blame him when Ndigbo gave him herds of cattles instead of focusing on the issue.
Ogun state also got their fair share of evacuated miscreants. Its not a tribal issue. Lagos state should not be made to bear the brunt of overpopulation simply because other state governors have refused to perform.
ReplyDeleteStella APC is going to Anambra this week to kick off campaign for Senator Chris Ngige. Its politically motivated. But I love Fashola anyday anytime, whichever party he is in.Love you fashola. Thanks for the apology I accept on behalf of my people cos in my eyes you can do no wrong.I wish the stupid APC will make you their presidential candidate. If they do I will dump GEJ.
ReplyDeleteAm with you Fashola al d way as president but I can never be for GEJ.I hv neva seen Nigeria in this kind of state even in d military regime. My heart bleeds.theres hunger in this land.
DeleteAnon 9:46AM, the apology wasn't tongue-in-cheek. And whether you want to get angry or not, the message is clear: Lazy Eastern governors like Peter Obi should try and develop their states so that there'll be less meaningless migration. It doesn't make any sense that human beings will abandon their inherited shelters, no matter how poor, go into a township and end up living at the mercy of Nature, AND REFUSE TO GO BACK.
ReplyDeleteYou're a very big fool for calling Peter Obi a lazy governor. You speak with so much ignorance and hatred. Besides who told you the people of Anambra are complaining. Besides, for the records, Peter Obi is one of the best if not the best governor Anambra has ever produced. Go and make your enquiries...

ReplyDeleteWell said Fashola, Igbo people shld go bk and develop thr states, there is really nothing special abt Lagos, another Lagos can be created if we so desire.
ReplyDeleteStella that was not an apology...and honestly I am one of those who believe the man has nothing to apologise for. Fashola understands the way we as average Nigerians think and this tongue in cheek apology is more a tongue lashing than anything else.
ReplyDeleteIgbos need to stop feeling sorry for themselves and playing victim. the war ended decades ago but there is a new war we all are fighting...against poverty and those who seek to keep us divided by the instrumentality of religion and ethnicity just so they can continue to loot us blind.
This is not medicine after death. This is indeed the way to do things. However, this does not change the polity of Lagos state. The Governor is really performing and the whole brouhaha from Anambra state is all for political motives. It is just nonsense. Why did they not complain when non-Abia people were thrown out of service? It was in another Igbo speaking state.
ReplyDeleteFashola has said it all. Every State should strive to develop. That way, folks won't feel the need to live and die in Lagos... Recently, I travelled to Idanre hills. I ate natural pounded yam, electricity was constant, but the State government has refused to tap into their natural resources. Palm oil, cat fish, palm wine, yams, timber, etc are very cheap over there. In fact, Lagosians troop to the State, buy these items and sell in Lagos...
ReplyDeleteGOD punish devil......Thank GOD he apologized........today i wwud hv taken a massiv actions on d yorubas.....my yoruba gateman,,,i wud hv Poisoned Him.....My yoruba househelp,,,,i wud have have Cut that her Fat Oily Yansh...........@spy.

DeleteYou wey you don dey eye your gate man to nack. Comot. You no well.
DeleteThat wasn't an apology.
ReplyDeleteWhy is it that when the right thing is done in dis country, pple use ethnic or religious sentiments to make it an issue?
ReplyDeleteI don't see anything wrong in his deportation of destitute' action to their various states!foreign govt do dat all the time and nobody complains.
He is just apologizing to clear the air and his name sake of coming election btw.
The solution to all these is a collective efforts by all arms of the govt to make every state in nigeria habitable!
Stella, I want to believe that by your question, you were merely playing the devil's advocate (I hope we all know the meaning). Fashola was clearly not apologising, he was actually asking the Igbo leaders to develop their areas rather than focusing energies on laying claim on areas where indigenes have provided enabling environment for people to flourish. (How can development be so difficult in the part of Nigeria that gave us Ike Nwachukwu...I think those are the real issues). A number of Igbos firmly believe that the success of Lagos is because of the Igbos - if they are so good why has the south east not seen such progress? Success of Lagos is due to the contribution of people from all parts of Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteFFK, I hope u've heard bah, aunty stella, atleast the guy don apologise, Igbo governors develop ur various states, so that our young men won't travel to Lagos inorder to look for greener pastures and then end up hawking pure water on the streets of Lagos. Abeg post
ReplyDeleteWhich apology?
ReplyDeleteI agree with anon 1.
Most people think Lagos is a goldmine.
Even in movies, its always 'papa, i'm going to Lagos. I'll make money and come back to take care of you'.
He did nothing wrong.
Babe,I tot ur fix picture was bad..mehn! Dis is a confirmation dat u r reallllly facial challenged......I can now understand all ur bile n hate...pele dear
DeleteHe is right, igbo Governors are doing nothing to help d people of ndibgo, dats y nobody wants to stay there, I'm igbo.
ReplyDeleteSDK thought u are smart before but am totally convinced that you are myopic
ReplyDeleteSDK thought u are smart before but am totally convinced that you are myopic
ReplyDeleteI will say let us all forgive him, better late than never. He realised his mistake and was man enough to apologise. I am a big fan of Fashola.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I have cause to wonder about how you reason Madam Stella, I just wonder whether you don't understand things in proper context or you choose to misunderstand them. #Toomuchsoftselldumbspeopledown
ReplyDeleteGood 4 d apologise, but igbo people should understand well dat dey ar not d only tribe fashola ll send home,no discrimination in wat he did.some years ago he sent ilorin & oyo people home.I can't count how many times he sent does aboki back to der boko village.igbo people should not raise as case wit him. Fashola is a man of discipline.one lov nig
ReplyDeleteRide on my gov. You are on point @ all time
ReplyDeleteNow can someone tell loud mouthed chicken brained Femi Fani kayode the difference btwn Men and boys cos to him, the yardstick for measuring his 'detribalism' is to tell the world names of igbo ladies he has shagged
ReplyDeleteWe know where he is coming from. APC hast started campaigning for Chris Ngige in Anambra state, so he is going to anambra to join the campaign, even Rochas have temporarily relocated to anambra state. This apology is political, so is not accepted.
ReplyDeleteFashola did not apologise for your info. This issue is seriously over flogged. I wonder why the igbo refused to fight Boko Haram wey dey slice una belle everyday. Leave Fashola alone. Try and develop your states. Eko o ni baje.

ReplyDeleteStella, pls kindly do a post on state government allowance to corpers. Ekiti state government suddenly witout any notice or apology decided to pay corpers 30k as against d 55k/50k allowance.
ReplyDeleteAnd the state didn't provide us with accommodation, we had to rent and equip the rooms ourselves.
Pls help we the batch C corpers in ekiti to raise a voice.
A lot of us deserve the money. I teach 2 classes, 2 subjects as against nysc guidelines cos there are no teachers in my school. And even d few teachers do not go to class.
I know some pple will say d state is poor bt d governor jus bought all d kings in ekiti car( there are abt 20 kings in d local govt where I serve) and he gave each king abt 5million.
Pls help us raise alarm.
Thank u!
You got 30k as against 55 and you're complaining.. Corp members at Niger state are paid 6k monthly. Be thankful in every situation you find yourself Bro cos your worst might be someone's best
DeleteStella na wa for u ooooo @ least he apologised.
ReplyDeletewhere is the "like" button for anon number 1....that was a very reserved apology. please reread Stella. He did not apologise for what he did or the basis of his actions, his apology was tendered to those that misunderstood his intentions and/or actions/. In short, his action(s) and argument still stands, but for those that misunderstood (meaning those that did not comprehend) the governor offers his apology.
ReplyDeletePay attention to the statement "Why do people feel the need to migrate?" rather than blaming the governor, deportee states sould worry about taking care of their indigenes and not personal account.
Yimu
ReplyDeleteLook! I don't fancy that apology. Apology for what? For reorganising the state and changing the city from a slum that its refered to today to a better place? I don't just get it. Why do we like turning things intoi either religious or tribal issues. If you think about it if you get to onitcha or owerri and you are not ibo can you even think of doing business talk less of thriving? Let's be tolerant and be real. If we keep going like this we are moving closer than ever to breakup. If you ask me I will say I prefer that breakup. And tell me whether ibo people will not be made to obey the law of the new state or be deported to their own new country. I don't see any big deal about what d Gov is doing an it shouldn't cause any wahala at all. People from other southwestern states were also 'deported'. Why are the ibos now shouting?
ReplyDeleteToluwalashe's boo. i dont know if you are the same person i see at Allen everyday, Ladipo Kuku to be precise. thats where i stay and i see someone that looks like you all the time. if you are the one, then i would advise you to change your ways. you are a pretty girl and your pictures do no justice at all. quit insulting people you don't know on the internet. you don't know who is who.btw, Fashola needs to deport more of these people.
ReplyDeleteShe's not the person u see everyday cos according to u d one u see is pretty...dat's definitely not toluwalashe's boo
DeleteIn America, no one want to stay in Butte, Montana. Every one yearn to go to one of the big cities especially New York. Its a normal thing. Lagos and Abuja are considered big cities and as such are considered to offer more opportunities especially for young people. I also agree with Fashola that each Governor should develop their state.
ReplyDeleteEh!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI work at Allen. Ladipo Kuku street.
Hahahahahahahah.
No go lay ambush for me oh. Sorry
@Toluwalashe, whom are u fooling?? Of cos u are anon 3:28pm. Who comes online to disclose their location? And how would someone who doesn't know u recognize u from a vague pic online? Moreso saying u are prettier in real life? How would they link a supposed 'prettier' version of u to a blog DP? U better get busy with something more mentally challenging than feeling up your lost self esteem on SDK. And the wannanbe "am bad" is just another shallow mental expression of a dejected person with an overall emptiness. Just get outta here!
DeleteDem don catch Toluwalashe's boo oh. see gobe.
ReplyDeleteBuahhhhahahahahahaaaaa @'papa, i'm going to Lagos. I'll make money and come back to take care of you'.
ReplyDeleteLagos is naija new York naaa...don't you know? The other day i was driving pass Ikeja flyover at oba akran..saw a guy kitted as though it was winter and a photographer was taking him pictures. Right on top the bridge! The car in front of me almost knocked down the photographer where that one de ensure better snap shot of dude against the background. Dude must have got that location mapped out to look so outta naija!
In my mind I say choiiii! Ds guy wan go wash people head say e de Yankee. I laughed so hard ehnnn...
Lol. Na ikeja Yankee.
Deletehe did not apologize, his just saying that other states should develop, but fashola the east is trying its best and it's developing at will,if Lagos was not the formal capital I'll know how it could have been today, been the formal capital and a base for the colonial master made it have this development, industries were built and all,the person calling peter obi is very stupid cos peter with the little allocation and revenue from the state a lot have been achieved, and for other western bloggers a beg travel and see don't stay in your comfort zone and think that the eastern part of the country is under developed, fashola can paint words to suit us for all I care, but the APC can never rule Anambra if you like campaign from ikoyi to ikorodu from OSHA to ekwuluobia we the Anambarians say no to your party, you deported destitudes in their own country?which constitution states that?thought your a San,those you brought back said they are no destitutes ,even if they were? you detained them for 6 months and packaged them like log and dump under the Niger bridge, anybody that supports this is as wicked as the devil himself.
ReplyDeleteyour an idiot,if lagos wasn't the former capital and other federal government projects like sea ports and airport what will be of lagos today? how many sea port are in the east? when it has become the obligation of states to build sea ports? ODE...
