DIAMOND Bank Customers Account Emptied Fraudulently Online

Just when most banks in Nigeria are investing heavily in making their online banking operations very secure ,thereby building customers’ confidence, Diamond Bank seems to be left behind and happy at the hardship its customers are presently languishing in due to the bank’s inefficiencies.

Or  can best explain how some fraudsters transferred the hard-earned money of a customer of the bank who paid the bank for a so-called ‘secure token’, which is an anti-fraud hardware, and Diamond Bank cannot explain how the ‘secure token’ was breached and money moved without itscustomers consent.
Diamond Bank is now trying to absolve itself from the whole mess?

The bank cannot still explain what happened to the N818,000 of the said customer or explained the accounts where the money was transferred to.

Narrating his ordeal in the hands of Diamond Bank, which is gradually becoming one of the most questionable banks in Nigeria, the embittered customer claimed that the bank is trying to push the blame to him after he was earlier told by the bank to pay the sum of N4900 for the ‘secure token’ to protect his internet banking from fraud. But after obliging the bank, he can’t get explanations as to how his 818,000 was transferred by some unscrupulous elements without his knowledge.

This is just one of the numerous cases of the fraudulent activities going on in the Alex Otti-led Diamond Bank, which prides itself to be a bank that is ‘there for you’. Some customers of  Diamond Bank  say that most of these frauds, especially the internet scams, are allegedly carried by the IT department of Diamond Bank. The affected customer narrated his ordeal below.

“Please I am going through serious pains right now and I really need help on the way forward. I opened a Salary Account with Diamond Bank in September 2012 to keep funds for my wife as I was travelling for my M.Sc program in the United Kingdom this January 2013.
“I applied for internet banking to be able to make transfers in December 2012 paying the exorbitant amount of N4,900 which they told me was for a token device which would secure my account from fraud.

“As at April this year, from salary inflows and other deposits, I had a total of about 820,000 Naira in the account. I woke up on the 23rd of April 2013 to see multiple debit alerts from my account with my so-called secure token still in my bag here in the UK.

“I immediately emailed the bank on the fraudulent withdrawal and received only an auto-response. With the lack of reply, I called their customer care line and after waiting through the long interactive voice response process finally got to speak to someone.

“The person who answered said they were going to take on the case and I kept getting new responses anytime I called back. It was a day later after angrily speaking to the person who gave me another assorted ‘canned’ reply that I was given a phone number which I should call to get the matter resolved.

“When I called, I spoke to a certain Mr. Ifeyemi who said they are investigating the matter and also asked me a series of questions to support the investigation. Based on the outcome of the so-called investigation, the bank is telling me stories that an email was sent to my laptop which took the money.
“I am now being told by diamond bank that I would be the one to look for the fraudsters and they are not liable for any damages. The accounts where my hard-earned money was transferred to are all indicated. Isn't a bank which sold me a product which is secure supposed to freeze the accounts where my money was transferred to pending investigation since I reported the fraud immediately?

“My wife is stranded in Nigeria. I am stranded in the United Kingdom and the Bank which claims to be ‘There for you’ is trying to avoid all responsibility for the occurrence after I have paid for a ‘secure token’.

  2. Easy way out is report the issue to the CBN. After forensic audit of the whole thing, they can indeed determine if the fault was from the bank or from you. Some manual debits can be done to make it look like Internet banking debits. Also, it is possible u have divulged your Internet banking information to one of the many dubious websites sending out fake transaction alerts and asking you to "update" your internetbanking details.

Don't cry about it, report it all to the CBN. They'll help protect your rights.

    1. He has his token with him. So even if he had mistakenky put his banking details in a mail, an online transfer shd still not be possiblw without the use of his token.

They sold him a product for that protection, he bought. It is unforyunately their fault now.

    2. What pple shud be aware of in doing online transactions is that they should be VERY CAREFUL in divulging sensitive information like their pin and password, also they should ignore any email asking for account update or their token information as hackers are everywhere and no e-system is safe from hackers.

      Delete
  3. Obviously those accounts where the money was transferred to have been emptied. Freezing the accounts is therefore not important. If they are savings accounts, they were probably opened with fictitious names and addresses. So apprehending the culprits will be difficult.

The certainty here is that the token was compromised. A forensic analyst can ascertain if the breach occurred from the bank or the customer's end. The customer should not get unduly emotional, he should work with the bank to resolve the issue. If the bank is at fault, they will definitely reimburse the customer.

He should get a lawyer to write the bank officially and copy Central bank..

They debited without paying me, Its funny how the staff (customer care unit) tried pushing the blame on me when I got in venting. It makes them irresponsible wen they shy away from their responsibility.
Even when I told them the online banking stuff would make me splurge on items + I feel its not secured, they still pressurizes me to bank online. I once tagged Diamond nd GTbank one of the best but now I resent my statement.
Aunt stell got her facts right, Diamond is becoming fraudulent.

  23. You think diamond bank is bad? try zenith bank especially the akowonjo branch. Know of someone that lost almost 4m there through the active connivance of his banking officer in black tall young man that wears pointed shoes like those "guy men" wear. You know what? They make sure they cover their tracks legally. Same thing happened to me in another zenith bank, dopemu branch to be exact. 180k was withdrawn from my account but I was able to get my money back because I had warned the bank earlier of the missing check number which they ignored. The scam with Zenith bank is that when they issue you a new cheque book, a page or two would have been torn out neatly. You then sign a release document which says counted and collected by me right? But most often we do not actually count the leaflets to make sure they are complete. Once you have collected your incomplete cheque book the syndicate in the bank then waits patiently until you have approached that cheque number and when they notice you have cash in the account. They then sign the cheque since they have your signature in the system. They further give it to their people to go and withdraw. My advice, once you get a new cheque book always count to make sure it is complete.

  24. Even Skye Bank is at it. They tried hacking my information and got my DOB, EMAIL AND ADDRESS I USED IN OPENING MY ACT RIGHT and then sent me a link to update my information. On clicking this link, it directed me to a site that looked exactly like that of skye bank and asked me to put in my pin. I refused and forwarded the case to customers service, till now, they didn't reply. This scams are being done from the inside, NO DOUBT! 100% sure. To make things worse, I cnt remember the last time I used my ATM card because I travelled out of the country for like 2 years, even though I still visit once in a while but would never still use d card, instead I go directly to the bank. They actually thought, the owner of the account had forgotten about the money there (550000)......Therefore, for them to have done that, even without me doing the online transfer with atm, I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT THAT WAS AN INTERNAL FRAUD.

  26. I started having double mind about diamond bank recently while doing my clearance in school after graduation. We were required to get a school fees payment schedule from the bank. Surprisingly, most of us had our names ommitted from the list. Meaning that the staff then, received the money, but didn't logde it in; oblivious of the fact that the school wld start a new policy of requiring payment schedule. Luckly for us, we still had our tellers with us, so the bank had to stage manage the whole drama

  28. This person needs to report this matter to CBN. Just looking at the account statement, I would say Diamond Bank is culpable for not protecting their customers account enough. Responsible banks should have a fraud monitoring department that actively monitors transactions especially online transaction son their customers' accounts. Any unusual transactions should trigger a red flag such that they would contact the customer to confirm that he/she is the person authorising the transactions. How is it that someone transferred N880,000 to different accounts, some in the same amount( N150,000)? Is this a regular pattern for the customer? There are questions that Diamond Bank must answer. As much as customers should be vigilant, banks also have a responsibility and duty to protect customers' deposits. This, if not expressly stated, is implied in the banking terms and conditions. The relationship one has with his/her banker is a fiduciary relationship which must not be betrayed!

  38. Before we jump into any conclusion, we need to understand the facts, I know before any transfer is done via online on a DB account, the beneficiary has to be maintained first on your online account profile. I am so sure the man in question would have given out his online details, most likely on porn site and they cleaned out by morning and he is now carrying foul play. A blog is for us to make our opinions heard, but at the same time, we should try to investigate and gather knowledge about the topic, before we get carried away with un-guarded speeches. And finally this is for you stella, you write an article with your mind all made up, give your viewers the opportunity to ponder and make up their mind...My personal Opinion your a very bad journalist.....Good Night and have lovely week ahead.

  40. I truly symphatise with you for loosing your hard-earned money. But truth be told, the victim of most bank thefts involving Tokens have only themselves and no one else to blame. If the blame is rated at 10 out of 10, then Diamond bank has only 1 and the customer has 9 out of 10.

I know of more than 20 people that their money transfered out of their bank account by fraudsters and in all instances the Account owners generated tokens and gave the scammers over the phone. The last dude whose money was stolen banks in First bank. Early in the morning he checked his email and saw a form to update his personal info. He enter all his info including DOB, mother's maiden name and First Bank online password and send it. Having got hold of this info, the scammers later in the day were able to log into his account. But they needed the token to be generated in order to steal his money, so they called him pretending that they were bank officials from Head office and they needed him to generate a token so that his account can be fully updated. He did and within 10 minutes of him given them the token All the funds is his account , about N150K was swept away.
In GTB, First bank, UBA, Access and many of the other banks you need to generate a new token for each transaction. but in diamond you can log in once with a single secured token and do several transactions. So once the scammers log into your account with a single token they can do multiple transactions. What would sure have saved the victim is if he had fixed a maximum daily withdrawal limit. Since you are a salary earner who barely managed to save over 800K in several months there is no reason why your daily transaction limit should not be between 100k - 200K.
The token itself is an extremely safe and secure device for online banking. It contains some random numbers that no human can guess, and no human can see apart from the account owner. Those hidden numbers are linked to by heavy encryption to a particular account. No one in IT can crack it. If someone is brilliant enough to break the encryption code, he would not waste time scamming Nigerians. He would be breaking into oversea banks like Federal reserve, EU and japanese banks. What really happens in Nigeria is quite simple. The customer gets an email to update his data. Not being observant, the customer will not notice that the address of the website is not a bank's website. After filling in his data, the criminals now can log into the account. But they need the token to steal the money, so they call the customer and he himself generates the token for them.
    It's that simple.
If you attempt to guess a token number and you get it wrong 3 times, which you would, you will be locked out of your account until the right owner of the account goes to a nearby branch or calls CS.
So i conclude, the dude that lost the 818K is not telling the whole truth. He filled a phishing email form which allowed the scammers access to his login details. The scammers also called him and he generated a token for them which they used in cleaning out his account.
The decision to get tokens should not be taken lightly. The person that should get a token should be someone who takes security seriously. And you can know the person who takes security seriously by the type of AntiVirus software he has on his computer. If you can spend up to $50 to acquire TOTAL protection antivirus from Norton, Avast, Trend, McaFFee, then feel free to obtain a token, since if you open a scam website to fill any form these programs with block the sites and warn you. If you do not have an antivirus or have a free one, believe me you, you do not need a token.
The scammers in Nigeria are too wise, sophisticated and have nearly 2 decades scamming very intelligent people from overseas. Duping an ordinary Nigerian who just started browsing recently is mere chicken feed

Had similar issue dis year. Wen numerous debit alerts was sent to my fone around 3am in the morning. About 65k was drained from my account while my so called ATM card was still wit me. ND I don't do internet online banking. The ATM card itself was new 3 days old. Of course I made reports. But their reply is always that they r investigating the matter. The customer care can be plain rude sometimes. Diamond bank is a very wack bank.
