Canada has denied asylum to 13,171 Nigerians between January 2013 and December 2024, according to official data. In 2024 alone, 811 Nigerians were rejected. Nigeria ranks fifth among countries with the most rejected claims, following Mexico, India, Haiti, and Colombia.

Experts suggest that economic hardship is a major factor driving irregular migration, which often leads to asylum claims being rejected.
