I watched a video on someone’s status yesterday. In the video, more than 50 young men and women were lying on the floor, while some stood near what looked like a counter, with someone behind attending to them. I also noticed a BetNaija advertisement featuring Jay-Jay Okocha.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the narrator, these young people had come to play bets, and when they loose, they lay there sometimes for days hoping that someone would win and give them money for food or transport. They do all sorts just to get money, only to spend it all on betting.
From his narration, betting in Nigeria today is more contagious than the coronavirus.
This reminded me of when my cousin brother staying with me finished secondary school and was waiting for university admission. I enrolled him at a friend’s place to learn solar panels and other skills relating to solar. My friend gives him monthly stipend for transport, and I also gave him transport and some money occasionally. I advised him to open an account to save his stipend.
After seven months, when he finally got admission, I told him to use his savings to buy his provisions. To my shock, he said he had no money in his account. What did you do with your money. He told me his mum asked him to send it to her. I called his mon she said he is lying. , I followed him to bank to get his account his account statement only to discover this boy had been spending his money on online betting. ₦50 here, ₦100 there, ₦200 elsewhere. He graduated to paying someone in Lagos to send him “sure numbers.”
Oh, Father Abraham! I can’t fully describe how I felt that day. Even he knew he had messed up and would never try such nonsense again. How can you invest in something for seven months, never win even once, and still keep going? Worse still, he was paying someone for “sure numbers” that never worked. If the person truly had a guaranteed winning number, why would they give it to a stranger like you instead of using it themselves or sharing it with their own relatives?
I don’t envy this Gen Z generation at all. They are struggling with so many things.

But pretending to be okay doesn't really help. It just makes you feel worse for not being able to "fix" things. Life isn't always about good vibes and happy moments. Some days, it's okay to feel broken. You don't have to force yourself to be okay all the time. A major sign of healing is being able to see and accept reality. It's recognizing people for who they truly are, not what you project unto them. No longer lost in limerence, shame , denial, delusion, dopamine, or the projection field, you can adapt to what is and create what will be.

ReplyDeleteWhenever I'm missing on a thread from my comment, know that my phone has gone off. I'm not someone who wouldn't engage a comment of reply beneath me when I'm online. There's no light here in my location couple with the weak battery my phone has. So I'm basically offline in most hours of the day except night hour when I must have charged my phone from a family who usually put on Generator. Sometimes before morning, the battery has drained off when I spend some time online to read stuff. As it is right now, it's just 5% left.
