Moving To Canada And Settling In - A Must Read

Nigeria, a land blessed with abundant natural resources, good weather, beautiful diverse people, culture has suddenly become a country suffering from brain drain.....

A large amount of its smart hardworking citizens are emigrating to western countries in search for greener pastures.

Recently, majority of its citizens have either successfully emigrated or are in the process of moving to "developing" developed countries like Canada with the hope of a better life.

Interestingly, everybody seems to know the pros of living in Canada but hardly do we hear of the cons and inconveniences of living there from those who have moved.

This post is created with the intention to help those planning or deciding to move to Canada .

There are lots of stories....

A young lady moved her after marriage with her UK degrees in tow and Nigerian Consulting experience but cant get a job after months of applying .......

A nurse moved and got a job after upgrading her nursing qualification.

A man that left his senior management banking job and moved with his family is not having it easy with so many kids (expensive daycare) and bills.

In summary, some people in Canada are regretting ever moving because they left their professional jobs, social life and comfort to become factory workers or customer service representative in Canada with no hope of getting to top in their career field as they would have if they were in Nigeria.

While some were lucky to get jobs in their fields and settled well. Some are currently in the process of deciding to move back to Nigeria and start all over with their foreign degrees and professional experience because the Canadian job market does not value them.

Please if you have moved to Canada, kindly share your experience on this blog post to help the multitudes giving up everything in Nigeria to move to Canada with no clear vision of what to expect.

Do you regret  relocating?why?Did you settle well? What did you do to settle well into the country and which province do you reside?Did you have to change your line of work?Did you have to go back to school? Are you considering moving back? Please let us know.

    1. Truth is these countries are humbling grounds. You could be a lawyer in Naija and become a CNA just to put food on the table. It’s very humbling but l will encourage people who want to move to do so especially if they have kids. The kids will get a brighter future here. So, in the long run, it benefits the kids. At least, there’s constant power, clean running water, quality healthcare and above all, l can drive home without been scared at 0230am but can’t try that in Naija. You just have to be willing to start from the scratch or middle. They don’t owe salaries here either.

    2. I lived in Canada for 14 years. Toronto and Mississauga. Cops are racist. Never catch a case with the cops as you will always be in the court system even on the slightest offence. You can spend years getting a job in your field so you have to work in factories. The only people that will enjoy canada are the females and their kids because of human rights. Once the wife calls the cops on her husband he loses his house and children. Useless country.

    4. I always advise people that the earlier you move the better for your kids. I say so cos I came to this country for further studies and I know where I had to start from as my mates here had graduated and started working already.
I am 30 and only became a manager last year (thanks to God), not complaining at all but believe me some of them here become managers before 30.
Also, when you migrate to a new country, please ensure go to school. It will not only you a better life after some years , it also helps you integrate and understand the life better where you are. Please men, I use God beg you send your wives to school too in the new country. I am saying this cos i have witnessed two families where this is causing trouble as the women haven't integrated properly and the men are not proud to take them out with them. These are men with at least a Masters o.
Make friends from different parts of the world, you never know who may help you, be open minded to their food, lifestyle and respect people's cultures too.
Finally, enjoy the process. A lot of people are too caught up in the future of when they will land that big job or break. It will happen but remember you always plant and water before the harvest. Life abroad is not for the lazy, so if you're ready to put in the work and God helping, you will make it. The earth is ours to subdue as His children and it doesn't matter where we live. You can make it anywhere in this world.

    5. I used to be a regular in Nigeria, i really appreciated the country and made several investments.
But over the past 5 years sadly things have drastically deteriorated. I sold all my investments and moved them to the west. My extra time is now spent travelling the rest of the world.
Nigeria is becoming worst, sad thing is that the youth have also lost their focus. I advice anyone - if you have the opportunity of a better life please take it especially of you have children.

    6. I won't tell anyone not to come because Nigerians see you as an enemy of progress when you attempt to warn them. Summarily, my friend was openly blocked and sabotaged her each time she attempted to get a professional job, even through volunteering. But once she took a temp position as an Admin Assistant, o, Canadians loved her and were so sweet to her. It was then she realized Canadians could be sweet. Simply put, the more educated/intelligent/qualified you are as an African immigrant, the more challenging your experience will be. But if you are willing to be under the white man and other races or nationals, serve as an Office Assistant, Call Center Agent or work in a factory then Canada will be very welcoming and nice to you but REMEMBER, CANADA HATES A BLACK MAN WITH AMBITION AND INTELLIGENCE!!!

  2. Nigeria is frustrating alot of people and those moving are no longer doing so because of poverty and hardships. I know people with well paying jobs with houses in posh areas of Lagos moving to Canada. And it's because They want a better life for their kids. Even me by God's grace, once I consolidate my investments in this country and I know my businesses can run without my presence, I'm off to get option B.Canadian passport.

  3. How many people can say categorically that they will reach the peak of their career in Nigeria. The only job thatguarantees you unbroken 35 years in service are government jobs.Getting one is next to being impossible if you do not have a God father. Many companies are packing up daily.foreign organisations are moving out or cutting jobs daily.I was once in a discussion with one of my friends and I asked that 20 years ago,we would hear things like:chevron is recruiting, mobile, agip, elf Ericsson etc.Someone should please tell me the last time we hear such in Nigeria of today. So,I do not blame people that are emigrating to better environment.at least for the sake of our tomorrow (our children).Things are tough I. Nigeria,my friend from southAfrica visited and observed that we can hardly get to buy something useful for hundreds of Maura.Everything you buy you spend thousands to do that.what is the value of our money?People that have the opportunity to emigrate should please do.As at now,I can not see any future in this country called Nigeria.

  4. All these stories will not change my mind from travelling out of this shit hole country.. I once rejected an offer to travel and practice in Dubai but as it is now if I see that offer again I go sharply grab it with my two hands. Mtcheeeeew, who Naija EPP? Imagine the meager salaries they're paying nurses in Nigeria while they pay doctors heavily that was the cause of Johesu 47days strike but in advanced countries they pay nurses even more than doctors bcos they're the ones doing most of the job in the clinical settings...
If the FG refused to be fair with all health workers and pay them according to the contributions they made rather than paying according to the no of yrs spent in school even if they're not contributing anything tangible...then Nigeria will continue yo experience brain drain especially in the health sector..

    Am out of here..

  5. No matter what you say, people would still move. The quality of life is better even if you don’t have job satisfaction. All I can say is give yourself at least 7 years in Canada to arrive at the spot you were in Nigeria. All the time, keep your eyes on the end and work towards it. Canada nobi mumu to encourage us Nigerians to come. Notice they choose the cream, no mallam shoe repairer. We come with enough money to settle, education and the Nigerian drive to succeed. Try to go for a visa as a poor man, you cannot get it, even as a rich person sometimes. Yet people can migrate after vetting.

  6. Canada is a very complex country. On one hand they claim to be a free and fair society. But on another hand they block economic progress and the advancement of non whites in the society. They are ready to pay millions $$$$$$$ on welfare handouts, social housing, medical expenses, disability support. And yet they don't care about the inequality and differences in employment status and income level of their non whites citizens and residents in the country.

You must be aware that Canadians are (closet bias) dangerous racists in the sense that it bothers them a lot and offends them when a black person is in a position of authority and power over them in the work place. That is why it seems like they don't value immigrants qualifications, skills and previous work experience. Shame and very sad this is the order in Canada and a normal their way of life.
If you remain only doing entry level jobs or flying under the radar in terms of employment (take casual jobs or temporary contracts) and making no career progress even after 30 years of arrival with a Phd or Masters degree level, that is very acceptable to Canada!!!
They don't care whether you make any meaningful contribution in their society and they won't recognize you and your efforts as long as you a black or brown skin color immigrant to Canada.

It is a place where you go to, hang in there and get their passport fast...sharp sharp and then find your own levels!!! You can invest in a business or buy a business franchise, or go into self employment, other career routes that doesn't require competition with anyone, and also you can easily travel out with your Canadian passport to the US, Dubai and Middle East, African countries or where ever you have opportunities to find good quality job and fulfillment in your professional career that otherwise is impossible in Canada.

Do not make mistake to buy a home, own a house anywhere in Canada, because you may find yourself in a very...terrible frustrating situation to pack up and go, with no immediate buyer or renter to pay you for your property and your're screwed by having an empty house in Canada in your name with bills, taxes, mortgage e.t.c to be paying for.
*** Make yourself very flexible and adaptable in your life in Canada to avoid serious problems with money trouble and such financial frustrations.

If you do find yourself in the colder places and parts of Canada, provinces like Alberta, Saskachewan, Manitoba, Yukon, NWT. Be prepared to suffer extreme weather problems such as health issues (arthritis, pneumonia, frost bites) due to the terrible cold, and also be aware of serious road hazards of high numbers of motor accidents during the winter months. This winter in Alberta, they recorded over 170 road accidents in one week alone in Edmonton region. And many people daily do loose their lives on the road in Canada due to bad road conditions during the winter months.
So, if you can when you get Canadian passport, plan your life well in such a way that you may not necessarily to go out or work daily during the winter months.
***If you can, run away, flee from Canada and travel out of the country between December to March every year. That is what the the white (successful & rich) people in Canada and this is known as "snow birds." These are mostly white Canadians who go to stay in such places like Miami, Florida, Arizona, Cuba, Mexico, Jamaica during the winter months in Canada to escape from the terrible cold weather.

On a final note, keep your thoughts, serious plans and movement to yourself and always locked inside your head in Canada. Every one over there is a great pretender and hypocrite who may stab you in the back, betray you, sabotage and frustrate your efforts when they discover that you make moves to leave others behind, or go somewhere else and improve your life.
They do tip off tax authorities, RCMP, social services and welfare, immigration and all sorts to make reports against someone every easy, out of jealousy or fear.

    Good luck in Canada!!!

    2. I guess you are speaking for yourself as I live in Edmonton Alberta and have never been involved in road accidents during winter and I am also living life peacefully. I know a lot of people here who own houses they would never have owned if they still lived in Nigeria, myself inclusive. Accidents happen everyday in Nigeria without winter so my dear, it can happen anywhere in the world. To anyone looking at moving to Canada, it’s a good place as long as you get your acts together and if you have to upgrade your education when you get here, please do so as it will help you integrate.

    4. Anonymoue10:59 haba your story line is not correct. I live in Saskatchewan and I have never experienced all you listed in your comment. My experience here about living I canafa is that getting jobs here is a bit tough especially for new immigrants. The 1st one year was so hard but if you have education certificate in any of their school here you may get a job on time rather than using your Nigeria certificates. Nobody will call any RCMP or revenue Canada or immigration on youif you have your legal status here. Not getting a job on time can lead to financial stress. The university educationhere is very expensive but worth while.I came in with my MBA but despite the Canadian assessment of my MBAi did not get a job for almost a year.I wrote over 40 applications, it was just saskpower( like NEPA) that invited me to write the exam, other companies did not reply me. I decided to go back to school and I obtained another masters certificate beforeieventuallygot a job.i will not discourage anybody not to come but just know that everything is not automatic . You must give room for uncertainties as well. All the best.Less I forget , Nigerians don’t help themselves o where as other tribes like Indian, Chinese will always inform their people of any opportunities in their work place but our people will never because they fear they will be back stabbed at work

    5. And after all the financial expenses to get there, you will still have to deal with 'CANADIAN EXPERIENCE' BS when doing interview with people you are way more qualified than. Yes, Canada is great if you are a young family but note that you will have to start from the bottom of your career no matter what experience you might have. 'Canadian Experience' (indirect professional discrimination) is very real and just know that you will have to spend between three to five years of struggling to settle down. Don't let anybody paint you any success story. Terrible seasonal allergies from pollen, grass and ragweed is also a problem people don't tell new immigrants and it gets worse after each year (after ten years or so) as your body loses resistance so know that too.

  8. Oh Canada, the beauty of the North, strong and free!
Canada is a beautiful country, with a working structure, and most jobs are highly regulated.
Most professionals have to take licensing exams, which are HARD and EXPENSIVE, however, once you become successful, you forget the pains.
I am a Physiotherapist, and had to take exams, in the interim, I worked transition jobs, but had my eyes on the goal of what I wanted to become.
Some people have to go back to school to upgrade also, because Canadian education and experience is very important.
I live in Calgary, Alberta, I immigrated as a permanent resident in 2016, as a young single lady, and have no regrets.
I settled in well, though the road was rough, but God's grace pulled me through.
One of the setbacks I have noticed with Nigerians, is , most people get into a lot of debt, and are stuck in transition jobs, because they have a lot of bills.

There are other provinces you can move to if one isn’t working for you and that argument about not buying a house is as lame as it sounds.

  12. Hmmm when Nigerians make a mistake they will hide and lick their wounds in secret. A lot of them are doing the ‘shitty’ jobs the real original citizens of these countries won’t do, only few are lucky, the majority just lie to you. When my hubby and I go for holiday hmmm we see them and we tip them heavily because truly they must have lost hope in their different African countries. The Europe and America they are all running to also went through their ‘dark era’ , google medieval Europe and see for yourselves, and they did not run anywhere, they worked on making their countries what they are today, most Nigerians don’t like to work, they just want to travel out and be slaves in white man’s land. They will never allow most of you rule in their countries even with all your British, Canadian or American passports. At best you will just be getting by. The best thing is to fix this country. Nigeria can become the envy of the world if we can remove the bastards that keep getting into political positions and put more systems and institutions in place that will deter corruption.

  16. The problem with Nigeria is we are very impatient people and want to run at the sight of the minutest problem. And when u run, u leave behind those too weak to fight to make the country better. Canada is the 2nd coldest country in the world and I wonder if the ancestors here ran away who will build the Canada that every Nigerian is now running to. And the irony is that the people running are the middle class or upper middle class that hv the power to effect the desired change. I mean anyone that can obtain a US or Canadian visa and pay ticket to come here cannot be said to be poor. But instead of staying behind and fighting to fix the country they run. And when they run, they lose their identity , career and the so cold kids they always say they are doing it for would lose their heritage. Respect for elders sef they don't have. I got upset and moved all my kids to Nigeria when my then 8 yrs old daughter told me to find another sit to sit on when I told her to get out let me sit down. Imagine that nonsense . Im a so called "successful " professional in Canada but im.not fulfilled in the least. If we ourselves are better human beings, there's no way we can let the evil politicians to ruin the country they way they hv done. But bc we are just like the leaders who hv not got the opportunity to loot, that's why we run at the least opportunity . Tufiakwa. We hv no natural disasters in Nigeria. All we have is man made but we are running away. Running to a life of loneliness and depression.

They are milking Africans through higher education, even after the higher education they still discriminate against you, only a few are highly favored to get the big breaks, putting yourself and children into 2nd hand slavery is overly gross and not worth it!!! Kids in public schools are still learning in Nigeria!!!

  17. Live in Toronto Canada. Came in 2005. Was already a banker (assistant manager) before I came. You have to humble yourself and go back to school to blend into the work force irrespective of what you studied. You have to be financially stable so that you can stay afloat.

Everyone’s experience is different. The people you hang out with or speak to when you migrate affects your path in a country like Canada. If you speak with nay sayers you will be influenced negatively. I have loads of colleagues ( nigerians) who came and started from scratch and they are now managers, directors even vps of huge organizations and government parastatals. You just have to humble your self ( becos omoshe will be your boss) and keep your eyes on the price. Above all be ready to invest in your education. The weather is also a big factor but you just have to layer up and deal with it. Every one hates winter -black and white. It’s a conditioning of the mind and body. Above all couples have to work as a team to make it in Canada. People come here and the difficulties of surviving can impact marriages and sometimes the laws can make children disobedient and wayward. There are good and bad sides to migrating. You just have to be focused and pray to God for guidance and favour.

    1. Most schools in Germany are free but you have to block more than 8000euros before you can get a student visa or you can as well use sponsorship letter.
But I’d rather you do the former as the later has some terms and conditions attached to it especially for your sponsor.

Personally, I won’t give SL to someone because once they run into trouble, then you are in trouble.

Also, before you come to Germany, learn German as if your life depends on it and if you can, get your B1.

Again, You must know that some cities in germany are expensive like Heidelberg so weigh your options.
      Good luck!

    1. A simple google search will tell you want you need to know.

You people won’t do research, later now you will say you got there and didn’t see job. Without any preparation or plan in place.

A simple search would have taken you an express entry group on Nairaland. You won’t do your research but you will have time to blam your enemies in the village.

  20. Moving to 'the abroad' requires a lot of careful considerations. For instance
Are you willing to leave your ' white collar' or professional job to do what Nigerians term as'manual' jobs in the abroad? The western world places value on jobs no matter what you do and indeed there is diginity in labour over here. Some so called manual jobs in the western world actually pay more than the professional jobs. So I would say a change of mindset first when you set foot in Canada, and then get ready to fold up your sleeves and get your hands dirty...in some cases literally..

  21. I live abroad and after getting my stay I PREFER NIGERIA anyday anytime! Nothing in this so called abroad, you live here and pay in dollars here. That why many don’t have savings! Thank God for the exchange rate ELSE😊 na korofo.
Many don’t own their homes but in big debts to credit cards and mortgages.

We lie saying it’s because of our KIDS but we forget that depending on our standards of living here that will determine the school district your child can go to, which boils down to the quality of education they get, the kinds of kids they mixed with.

Also parents are out there working and not giving the same kids proper attention and most of the “kids” become rascals. And after the primary/secondary education which is free but not free cos it’s been paid by the DAMN huge Real estate Taxes and other taxes.

Also colleges are VERY EXPENSIVE, you either get a loan or scholarships which they pay again for the rest of their lives. And the types of colleges the kids get accepted to, depends on the high school they had gone too only if a very brilliant kid.

Yes some things works here, but if you make money in Nigeria stay put, don’t derail your journey.

NIGERIA is a land of many untapped resources n opportunities and less competition, unlike here you can barely RISE.
I know some will disagree they are looking for who to join them in this suffering here working on their feet for straight 8hrs washing plates, doing security jobs, factory work, home aide. No they are not easy jobs, even after getting papers they still not on the average.

If we had vision and exposed to so many things we can do in Nigeria, our lives would have be better but many prefer to work for others for the rest of their lives!

I advise people to come if nothing is working for you in Nigeria but if you are doing VERY FINE in Nigeria, you are coming to SUFFER!

    1. Anon 17.28 YOU HAVE SPOKEN THE TRUTH, GOD BLESS YOU. A few people are lucky BUT majority are doing horrible jobs they will never take up in Nigeria, how many of you living abroad and doing security work can do same here, can you wash dead bodies in Nigeria, can you wash plates in hotels? Nooooooo, with your first degrees and masters, it is a shame that you cannot build your country but prefer to do omo-odo work for the white man. When you are in your 50’s and 60’s that is when you will realize your mistake

    2. Hello truth teller, a lot of people don’t realise this o.... it takes 3-5years to get ones footing in the US....

    3. Can you compare the security guard in Nigeria and the one in Canada? The standard of living alone is worth migrating for, even if you are willing to owe in Nigeria you can't even get a loan. Nothing better than a system where it works, we live then we die, give yourself the best life while you can even if you are in debts, it's better than saving and earning in the dark in Nigeria, if there is an accident and emergency in Nigeria, even with all your money you may still die whereas you just need to be a human being first in Canada and your life and health will be taken care of in any emergency regardless of whether you are rich or poor, I can go on and on.

  23. i moved here in 2014 and its been great so far i got a job that am comfortable with but i can do better , hence my decision to resign and go back to school .
First if you are thinking of coming here its a great country : enter in a legit way either as a landed immigrant or come through school that way you get papers after education.
The education will definitely put you up there and in a better place as for the cold Canadians wey dey live here never die so you cant die hahahahahah .
Again if you are making a lot of money in Nigeria i don't see any reason for the move. Come and do vacation and go or better still when your kids are grown send them abroad for schooling .my two cents

  24. I have lived here for 6years, came as an international student. Don't believe all these horrible stories, lots of Nigerians here are doing well. Yes there are challenges, but if you are determined and focused, this is a society that rewards hardwork. Make that move if it's in your plan.

  27. I have been in Canada for more than 10 years. This is my opinion: not everybody should move to Canada! Canada is a very good country....I love it! You should move if you have the following qualities: hardworking, resilient, and determined. I will also say you should bring survival money for at least 6 months from Nigeria.
I have been meeting a lot of new immigrants and I feel most of them will do very well.
One got a job in her field after a week, one has gotten about 5 interviews but no job yet. Also one has been interviewing with big companies and at the verge of getting a job.
One just came and got interviews already and I know one who got a job after 7 months of being here. So really it varies, the most important advice here is DO NOT LISTEN TO NEGATIVE PEOPLE...don’t be friends with them either.
A friend of mine came 4 years ago. During this period he has bought about 3 houses....one is paid off😀.
For me I am doing too well...I give all glory to GOD.
