A pregnant Nigerian woman among the 6,500 migrants rescued on the Mediterannean sea delivered a baby on board before rescue came.
According to The Telegraph, the baby was born on board an Italian navy ship, the Bettica after her mother, who is Nigerian, was rescued from a boat floating off the coast of Libya on Monday.
The newborn baby and her mother are said to in good health.
The Nigerian woman was among the 6770 migrants rescued from four different boats, all of them sent from the coast of Libya by smuggling gangs from Middle East and Africa.
“The mother was brought on board in dramatic circumstances – her labour had already started,” the navy said in a statement.
The baby was delivered by Sara Modde, a doctor with the Order of Malta, a Catholic charity that has teams of medics on board many of the search and rescue vessels operating in the Mediterranean.
Vincenzo Pascale, the captain of the Italian navy ship on which the baby was born, said: "She is a beautiful baby girl who has touched everyone on board. The mother started to have contractions as soon as she was brought aboard and gave birth after eight hours.
"We made a little crib and put it next to the mother, who was worn out by the labour," he told Italian media.
However, not all of them survived the crossing. Seven dead bodies were found aboard two large rubber dinghies packed with migrants, while the corpses of three others, who had apparently jumped or fallen into the sea when they saw rescue vessels approach, were pulled from the water.
It was further reported that the smugglers had packed people into the boats so tightly that they were unable to move their legs and many were suffering from cramp.

Imagine risking your life for a better life you are not even sure of getting.Life in Europe for some is hell, not everyone is fortunate,i have seen them suffering and smiling whilst those back home think otherwise..people be warned!
Such a cute baby....so what will her nationality be? Mediterranean Sea? Lmao. ..just kidding! The woman though...how could you?
ReplyDeleteSaw a video with people trying to migrate, and while they approached the vessel, the boat capsized and most of them were moving farther from the vessel, while they threw life jackets into the sea....its sad really....
What thinking the same thing @her nationality.

People should stop running from Nigeria to these places. You go there and can't even keep up. You seek better life yet you go there to clean, wash and cook for people who under pay you. Only few Nigerians are making it over there
DeleteThe only time it's best to travel to these countries is for vacation of course with a plane and not boats and ships
Go there, spend money and come back

ReplyDeleteAnty Stella, why are they suffering them self. God will deliver them. BB
ReplyDeleteIt has been going on for years & is a very bad idea for anyone to even have the thought of trekking through sahara desert then by sea to Europe. Even hearing Nigeria among them makes one ashamed of our country.
ReplyDeleteWho do you blame? Ofcourse our leaders who refused to look after it's citizens. If Nigerians are doing well people won't take such risk. The risk became necessary when people have had enough with poverty they think no matter their situation they can make it outside the country. There's nothing abroad money paid to smugglers can be channeled into business in Nigeria so why take such risk. Why pay $2000 or more to smugglers when money can be use to establish small business it makes no sense. Abroad is only good for two things, study and return home or holiday. Do not leave your good paying job on a journey you are not sure. America suffer plenty, UK suffer over plenty, Italy over suffer, Germany,France,Canada same. When you have no residency you will surely suffer abroad.
Cute baby gurl. Thank goodness mom&child re okay. This is risky to embark on. D sight of dt ballon like boat alone sends shivers down my spine.
ReplyDeleteWhat a risk
ReplyDeleteMy God.... Congrat to her More than 900 people died on that sea this year only UN should do something about this as soon as possible

ReplyDeleteThe baby is a citizen of the country the ship represents. By law every ship is representing her nation so automatically the baby is an Italian citizen and the mother has a right to the country her baby is from. How do I know this , I have a brother who is a US marine.
ReplyDeleteThank God for the baby and motherd lives.
